Thanks Wouldbe we are trying to sell it to her that way, she's a Feb birthday so not 18 till next year some of her friends whose parents deferred them are over a year older. She has always been fine academically and socially at school but leaving home so young was a bit of a worry. Party girl that she is doesn't fancy being underage forthright majority of her Freshers year. That's my girl!

Haudyourwheesht · 20/04/2021 11:23

I can't even begin to imagine how we'll get these things marked to the SQAs specifications in the time given. And here I am on Mumsnet. Grin

DeepfriedPizza · 20/04/2021 11:30

I was speaking to a teacher friend the other day and she was talking about the vaccine etc and she said that she felt guilty she had hers already (young-ish but cares for elderly father so a carer) and I just felt really sorry for her. She is obviously, quite rightly, entitled to the vaccine as she's a carer and also a bloody teacher but she still feels guilty. Most teachers have worked their arses off over the past year and they are still going through shit just now.

My rail is job hunting, it's bad enough job hunting during "normal" times never mind during this shit show. Back in the olden days you knew the location of where you were applying for but now you can't find that out as the recruiters don't advertise that. Not to mention zoom interviews of doom

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2021 11:31

Oh, god, the very thought of a zoom interview fills me with dread.

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2021 11:33

@Lidlfix it’s definitely better for your dd to aim for next year then. She’ll be able to carouse with impunity. And, obviously, focus on her studies at a more mature age 😃

BettysCardigan · 20/04/2021 11:33

Oh I quite like a Zoom interview as you only have to look good from the waist up Grin

But YES so hard to look for jobs now and figuring out if they're actually remote or just remote for now, etc. It's frustrating! I applied for a remote role, had a great interview, then they asked how I felt about moving to London! Erm....nope, it was advertised as remote and the HR Manager went 'oops, that must have been me making a mistake on LinkedIn'.

Great, thanks love Confused

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2021 11:36

I get very self conscious and don’t do any zoom type online stuff. My work is so old school we do it by telephone.

@latissimusdorsi

This is just going to backfire. Folk will just have friends and family round to their houses. they'll work out their own seating plan and risk factors And they won't be spending money in hospitality thenConfused
Some of us have been doing this already....

I really feel for the hospitality sector. First the Scot Gov fucked education with their "blended learning, not blended learning, who said anything about blended learning it was always a full time return" mess, now they've moved on to hospitality and are dreaming up ridiculous rules and hoops for them to jump through too so Saint Nicola can stand up and proclaim that she's reopened hospitality when anyone with half a brain can see she hasn't.

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2021 11:43

Do we think she’ll say anything new today?

I agree @RaspberryCoulis. People, including me, are doing their own thing, as far as is possible.

@frasersmummy

ds in s4 has come home stressed beyond belief. He has assessments in every subject over the next few weeks. Some days he has assessments in 3 different classes in the one day. How is this fair on the kids ?
I have the same with my DD, @frasersmummy. She is a plodder academically, strong in some subjects, a C in others would be a huge achievement. She tries SO hard though and she is up to high doh with these "exams which are not exams". School yesterday tried to reassure the kids but for every teacher taking the "do your best, we know it's a weird year, no pressure" there's another telling them it's their whole future at stake.

She is sitting the Maths nat 5 paper 1 on Monday, after being out of school since 18th December, and her maths teacher has not returned to school, DD says she's shielding. Maths is her weakest subject and there is no way that even the strongest student is going to perform to the best of their abilities in these circumstances. A poor mark is going to DESTROY her confidence.

Jeezo, just as we thought we were coming out of this shit, it just gets worse.

Scottishskifun · 20/04/2021 11:51

I can't believe the mess that teachers and pupils have been dumped in!
Worst bit is the majority of the public unless they have secondary school children or a teacher are completely unaware of the whole thing after SG stood there and said no exams.......

It's truly appalling!

Scottishskifun · 20/04/2021 11:53

Maybe a deliberate AIBU for d a i l y f a i l to pick up...... 😉

BettysCardigan · 20/04/2021 11:55

@RaspberryCoulis that is absolutely appalling Shock

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 20/04/2021 11:55

It's so shit for high school students. I doubt it will be anything new today. Maybe something random like opening some stuff on Friday instead of Monday or some shit like that.

RaspberryCoulis · 20/04/2021 11:56

I agree, @Scottishskifun. I volunteer with older ladies who have grandchildren but they are still at the preschool/primary stage. They are firmly of the "isn't Nicola amazing keeping us all safe" opinion because their grandchildren have been in school since February half term, don't have to wear masks and are years away from exams. They just couldn't see why I was so angry on behalf of my three who are in secondary.

Mistressinthetulips · 20/04/2021 12:01

Depending how your school organises it, it will feel like there are more assessments than a normal exam diet but they are shorter ones (so say an English exam has three sections, instead of doing them at once many schools have split them into three). This seems more stressful but each individual assessment is shorter and only on one section. Swings and roundabouts I suppose. We don't have a lot of choice anyway, the SQA want this kind of assessment as evidence.

BettysCardigan · 20/04/2021 12:03

I've probably been a bit guilty of that myself, just because exams etc feel very unclear to me now, all the names etc have changed and I don't even remember what time of year things tend to happen!

I have been very grateful that my kids are at ages where things haven't impacted them too much (educationally speaking, one of them has had some MH issues).

rookiemere · 20/04/2021 12:17

It's an absolute balls up for exam age pupils. My friend has said that her DD who works hard is in tears every day and simply exhausted by so many false starts and has no idea how to proceed next year.

But SG still patting themselves on back for decision not to go ahead with "exams "
So early. So relieved DS not in an exam year.

RaspberryCoulis · 20/04/2021 12:18

Oh I'm most definitely not blaming the teachers. @Mistressinthetulips. This is absolutely the fault of the SQA and the Scottish Government.

RaspberryCoulis · 20/04/2021 12:23

Does anyone still have the Protect Scotland app? I deleted it weeks ago. And won't be reinstalling.

shouldistop · 20/04/2021 12:26

@RaspberryCoulis I deleted it a week after downloading it, months ago.

WouldBeGood · 20/04/2021 12:33

Unsurprisingly, I don’t have and have never had the app.

OP posts:
riverrunning · 20/04/2021 12:37

Never installed it either - I've found covid generally not a high point for people empathising with others.

I'm really glad my dc are young enough to recover from the dog's dinner of covid education and sorry for anyone with secondary aged kids.

shouldistop · 20/04/2021 12:42

Why oh why are we to be grateful about moving to level 3 when there are 15 cases per 100k where I am and the average across Scotland is 21? I don't know whether to be angry or sad.
