Anyone else unsure who to vote for?

Used to be a Labour supporter but they don't stand in my constituency (or when they do, they come 5th or 6th). It's between SNP, Lib Dem and Tories (in that order) here. I physically can't vote for the latter two, however I'm not enthusiastic to vote SNP, despite voting for them previously. Greens aren't standing either. I hate the idea of spoiling my ballot but I genuinely don't know what to do. Anyone else in the same situation (not necessarily stuck between the same parties)?

A headline has popped up with NS already going on about another bloody referendum.

Fine, clearly that is what a lot of voters want, accept that but I will again go back to the point about the need for inward investment and support for businesses. NS is really weak in this and it’s a concern as we will need this post independence and really should be doing a lot more in this space.

For example, SNP have been clear about getting rid of trident. Ok, but what about all those jobs that are supported by trident and faslane, what’s the plan or is it the same plan the tories used in the 80’s whilst closing heavy industry.

RBS have already said that they will move their hq to England. Again what is the impact on jobs especially as many will be higher rate tax payers. And I don’t think they will be the only financial services company to do so.

It’s not good enough to just say, when we are independent we will do blah blah blah. Things should be done now as we can’t keep putting it onto Westminster.

It’s time to stop the diddy politics and start preparing to be a grown up independent country, but I suspect that won’t happen.

@swiggless

Ended up voting SNP if anyone was interested.

To describe the SNP as socialist is laughable.

TheSandman · 08/05/2021 19:45

Fine, clearly that is what a lot of voters want

Given that ALL we heard from the Tories for the whole election was "Stop the SNP and Stop Indref2!" and that the SNP haven't been 'stopped', and the Greens - also in favour of independence - have been returned in a larger number than before, it's obviously not what a 'lot' of people want but the MAJORITY want.

RBS is 82% owned by the UK government. Of course the UK gov is going to sabre rattle that they're going to move their brass plate from Edinburgh to London. They did exactly the same thing before Indyref1.

Suffolkpunch345 · 08/05/2021 19:49

@TheSandman

Actually it’s 62% and that move is due to the volatility a potential Indy ref/ separation will cause.

Selkiesarereal · 08/05/2021 20:03

Irrespective of whether it’s sabre rattling what is the contingency plan and also what about the jobs that will be definitely lost when trident goes, what is the plan for them?

TheSandman · 08/05/2021 20:07

banksdaily.com/info/royal-bank-scotland

Says 82% but let's not split hairs, the UK government still owns a controlling share. That's the UK in which we are told we are a partner (hah!). This is a purely political. Why mention it just before an election otherwise? This is just the usual grubby Tory backroom politics.

I'll bet you they'll move the brass plate back lickity-split as soon as an Indy Scotland looks like it's going to rejoin the EU.

It's a tiny amount. Hardly worth £billions of taxpayers money.
charliebrown59 · 08/05/2021 20:24

A tiny number of jobs eh? Oh great we're into poorly defined economics facts time. Time to log off and celebrate your victory Indy fans. It was a stonker and many many more fun indy debates to come.

Do you have an economics degree? Grin
Selkiesarereal · 08/05/2021 20:31

Oh my god, a tiny number of jobs, I take it that includes those at and supported by faslane. I’m getting flashbacks of Ravenscraig closing as that was relatively a few jobs really.

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/05/2021 20:31

StillRailing · 08/05/2021 20:34

Jesus Christ.

WouldBeGood · 08/05/2021 20:36

Luckily, there was burrata!

But no nduja... outrage

StillRailing · 08/05/2021 20:36

no Nduja sounds painful.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 20:36

Ravenscraig and Faslane are different kettles of fish morally. It's like comparing apples and oranges. There's no need for nuclear weapons and I would hope that the job losses could be managed in some way given that they're not exactly civilian posts.

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/05/2021 20:37

500 civilian jobs. Could make them all millionaires and spend a few million increasing infrastructure / attracting tourists and businesses to the area and still save billions.

titsintiers · 08/05/2021 20:38

I prefer sobrassada myself
StillRailing · 08/05/2021 20:39

I had burrata on holiday and liked it very much. But it's one of those things I don't eat at home.

I just seem to want casserole right now. Wonder why with the weather Hmm although tomorrow it may be approaching a scorcher!

StillRailing · 08/05/2021 20:39

Roll on scorcher Sunday!

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/05/2021 20:40

Nearly 3,000 lost their jobs at Ravenscraig ( with no help whatsoever/ £ to re develop the area).

Selkiesarereal · 08/05/2021 20:43

They might be different morally but not to the people who’s livelihood will be impacted. What is the contingency plan given that we know it’s going. And yes I’m shocked at the belligerent attitude to people’s jobs and tourism doesn’t pay that much but I’m sure that the highly skilled workers will be happy to move into minimum wage jobs.

I thought the tories were bad in the 80’s but the snp are clearly working to the same plan, next we need Blackford to tell them to get on their bikes to find work and we are a complete circle.

ResilienceWanker · 08/05/2021 20:44

@WouldBeGood

Luckily, there was burrata!

And now I have 2 Unlimited going round in my head... No no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there's no nduja.

So thanks for that Grin

Fucking BBC Scotland has cancelled Casualty for the election coverage. Bastards.

titsintiers · 08/05/2021 20:45

What a fucking travesty.

forfucksakenett · 08/05/2021 20:47

I think that comparing the systematic destruction of the workplace economy in the north of England and Scotland in the 80s to disarming nuclear weapons is a bit of a stretch to be honest.
