I do think Cherry has a lot of thinking to do, certainly. And you're right, Stats, her prospects now vs when the SNP system spits her out are something she'll need to weigh up. I suspect she'll hold off until the dust settles though. I think she probably does genuinely need space & is likely ill just now, but she's taken herself out of the equation for now so I suspect she's being a bit more cautious than others. She's just got much more to lose I think. On both sides of the fence.

As an aside, Blackford makes me so annoyed by wearing tartan all the time. He’s like a caricature

Unpleasant memories of Nicholas Fairbairn come to mind. Remember him?

I won't direct you to his video posted today of him in his Croft moving sheep, wearing Salmond coloured troosers then - you must combust!

Ha ha ha! My phone has automatically capitalises Salmond! 😂

😂😂I couldn’t take that!

And more of his positioning as a simple crofter, not millionaire merchant banker.

@GreenlandTheMovie yes! Dear god. I’d bet that Blackford owns a tartan cape thing too.

WouldBeGood · 27/03/2021 13:02

Inverness cape! The name had escaped me

Oh dear. Amateur hour from Alba.

Why would they not ensure all the domains were bought?

There was another version redirecting to the Tories last night too.

Agreed. It's very SNP though. 'P' seems to stand for pettiness.

You're kind of thinking the same way as me I think @GreenlandTheMovie. I'm genuinely struggling to think of a country which has separated from another in similar circumstances to Scotland and which has been successful enough to be considered aspirational. Most seem to be places which retained a higher degree of separation (Norway for example), former colonies (and I do object to people who try to put Scotland in this bucket, we were very much colonisers not colonised IMO), places which were somewhat artificially created due to the breakup of empires and people pretty much drawing lines on a map (former Ottoman/Yugoslavia/USSR), or have ended up with long drawn out complex issues (Israel, Ireland)

The "independence is normal" messaging seems to ignore so many challenges.

sessell · 27/03/2021 13:14

@statistically I would think the Republic of Ireland would meet your criteria, unless I'm missing something.

Time is against her if she wants to try to stand for Holyrood - deadline is end of this month I believe.

I get the feeling she is genuinely unwell, quite possibly as a result of what she's been through. Her "supporting women" party should hang their heads in shame.

WouldBeGood · 27/03/2021 13:17

After seeing her tweet in response to the speculation yesterday I think JC won’t go.

Might step down from politics altogether, I reckon.

BlackForestCake · 27/03/2021 13:17

I could well see him making space for the more high profile AFI folk - Murray/Hirst/Sheridan for example

Whatever you think of their politics, their egos or their past transgressions, Salmond, Murray and Sheridan in parliament would be a very formidable line-up.

Seriously? You think that bunch would be "formidable"?
GreenlandTheMovie · 27/03/2021 13:21

Sheridan - oh christ, no! Wasn't he jailed?

Salmond, who self-confessed of multiple instances of inappropriate behaviour not-quite-amounting-to-criminal-behaviour with women and Sheridan, he of the sex tapes and lying on oath? And in the meantime, the SNP protect everyone except women (and men) in their new Hate Crime bill, which encourages kids to turn in their own parents!

What is happening to Scotland?

I think so too. And I think all this commotion is probably v badly timed for her. Perhaps in a less charged atmosphere & not time critical she might have taken the chance. I think she'll more likely step down if the SNP continue to endorse her treatment from the misogynistic factions that seem unhealthily focused on her. And they should feel burning shame over this.

Tommy Sheridan was jailed for perjury after a defamation action he brought about his reported activities in a swingers’ club.

During the defamation case I think he sacked counsel and represented himself, with a terrible cross examination of a woman which was truly disgusting, particularly given that it was shown later that she had not been lying.

TheShadowyFeminist · 27/03/2021 13:29

I always took Sheridan to be performance art. His AFI 'selfie' was just laughable but that's the image he wants to portray. He's not formidable, he's just annoying 😁

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 27/03/2021 13:30

There were also allegations that he had drunk champagne and taken cocaine, although he had claimed to be teetotal. He was also married at the time. His wife was also charged with perjury but the charges against her were dropped.

Blurberoo · 27/03/2021 13:31

He wouldn’t need a mic in parliament, anyway!

I have very little recollection of the details of this case - trying to remember what it was all about had me scratching my head.

RoI is the closest - although the break up has hardly been straight forward (UK to blame for that largely)

My understanding is that the treatment of Ireland was also quite different to that of Scotland.

It's also 100 years on and there are still essentially unresolved issues due to the partition of the country. I also don't know (I'll admit my Irish history knowledge fails here a tad) how popular independence was within what became RoI - obviously NI is a whole other question - but AFAIK I don't think they had the roughly half and half issue that Scotland does? Happy to be corrected
