@fluffyugg

Did anyone hear JS speak about schools yesterday? Press reporting that he said there's still uncertainty about them returning full time? 🙄
Yes he said there was still uncertainty around reducing the 2 meter rule in secondary schools and that he couldn't say for certain that they would be able to go back full time. He would know more in the next couple of weeks.

Basically case rate isn't falling quick enough in some places.

rookiemere · 25/03/2021 08:24

@Scottishskifun and if that's the case then all other planned openings should be put on hold if education really is the top priority.

WouldBeGood · 25/03/2021 08:24

He’s a fucking arse. Really upset by this so railing on the other thread. And here. My poor boy

dancemom · 25/03/2021 08:25

Not putting the schools back full time after Easter would be suicide for SNP, vaccines rolled out for all priority groups, death rate at pre pandemic levels .... surely they have to go back?

forfucksakenett · 25/03/2021 08:26

Surely the seniors will need to be in full time? It's going to be difficult enough getting them all assessed as it is!

rookiemere · 25/03/2021 08:27

At some point SG has to take the leap of faith that infections no longer lead to increased hospitalisations and deaths.

NS said that schools were going back ft after Easter and that schools were the top priority. So why does it feel like they're sitting in a room scratching their heads over the non reducing numbers and JS going I know let's not open schools properly.

ResilienceWanker · 25/03/2021 08:35

Aaaaarghh! No, they can't fail to open schools properly, surely? With what evidence?! There hasn't been a huge increase in cases in the rest of the UK where schools have been open, what, 3 weeks now without 2m distancing and so on? There may have been a slowing down of the decrease, but that's expected as soon as you increase contacts again. It's just cruel to keep playing with people like this to mask their failure to get outbreaks under control.

RaspberryCoulis · 25/03/2021 08:41

Swinney is a lying, incompetent ARSE and anyone who believes a WORD which comes out of his sleekit mouth after a year of this shit needs to give their head a wobble.

Kids need to be back. Full time.

It's after the date for some of the reopenings. Apparently special advisory group meeting on the 5th of April.

Edinburgh paper had a article which summed up the discussions

Yes!!
ResilienceWanker · 25/03/2021 08:55

Is he really saying "oh, we'd have to relax the 2m rule for high school to go back full time..." Well, yes, that's hardly rocket science is it?! I know I'll get told off for thinking that what JS says is in any way indicative of what will happen ("he's just being cautious, isn't that a GOOD thing?") but really? Why add that extra worry? Why not just say, yes, this is what is happening and if data that changes that emerges over the next few weeks we'll let you know in good time.

rookiemere · 25/03/2021 08:58

Feels like 2020 all over again. Oldies all queueing up to get into those well known essential shops called Garden Centres, whilst our DCs languished at home with play parks chained up.

Still at least this time we can get hair cuts. Whoop, whoop.

UnderHisAye · 25/03/2021 08:58

I think they've not been clear enough about the timetable of decision making. I think what happened was they gave out dates, things that would take place at three-week intervals, but didn't make very clear that these were indicative and would be signed-off five days prior to the change taking place.

Or something like that anyway.

That's what happened with primary schools, although I don't think anyone thought it was more than a formality. Maybe this will be the same, but maybe not given the size of some of the outbreaks that have happened in the last week.

Scottishskifun · 25/03/2021 09:04

I've read it as they plan to but won't say that it's a definite and data will be looked at.

I think it's similar to the announcement that secondary would be going back before Easter. Parents expected a few days to find it was a few hours. They expected it to be certain that they will be back after Easter and now its a well that was based on no 2 m and we aren't sure.
I hope they do come through with it and allow back ft not for the SNP but for bloody children's education!

ResilienceWanker · 25/03/2021 09:16

Yes, that's how I understood it too under. But I don't think they ever said what the criteria were for "signing it off" as far as I'm aware. So I think people are assuming that as cases overall aren't increasing, really, and deaths and serious illness are decreasing, then it would be fine and the dates would go ahead as planned. But if there's extra requirements for it to be signed off (no big outbreaks? Cases falling by X amount?) they probably should have pointed that out.

I feel so sorry for the children (and teachers of course!) The blended approach has meant that apart from the 3 hours they're getting in school or whatever, in many cases they aren't getting anything else, as all the teachers are busy with the rest of the class getting their 3 hours. So in many ways it's worse than being 100% at home. Our neighbour in S5 is getting half days, but it's so stressful, that she is finding it so difficult to focus on doing anything at home by herself in the remaining half day, and I really can't blame her Sad. I think people were generally sucking it up for the 3 weeks before Easter and using it as social time as much as actual education, but that can't go on indefinitely. So if it's not full time after Easter, then how are they going to be educated? It'll fall on the teachers again to work it out, and that's so unfair.

rookiemere · 25/03/2021 09:19

My friends DD in S2 has low level autism so she can function in main stream schooling, but the complete lack of structure or routine is impacting her very badly. She can't continue with another term of this hybrid mess.

UnderHisAye · 25/03/2021 09:20

Yeah I don't think criteria has been shared either. It might be on a document somewhere on the Scotgov website but who knows?

ResilienceWanker · 25/03/2021 09:25

I know this isn't the railing thread, but can I rail about how awful the various documents are to navigate around on the SG website?! I'm not sure how it could be improved, and gov. UK is hardly a beacon of usability, but there must be some way of sorting it out! A decent search function or something at least. I think it was the dolphins conservation strategy, and the residents' workshops minutes and the Hamilton report all being published on the same page on Monday that finally tipped me over the edge...

UnderHisAye · 25/03/2021 09:27

Agree! I sort of admire their willingness to share so much information, but it's a bit like trying to drink out of a water hose.

When NS says in a briefing 'we've published a new document today on the government website' my heart sinks.

Scottishskifun · 25/03/2021 09:30

@ResilienceWanker I agree it's an absolute nightmare to navigate and my DH uses it every day for his job and it takes him at least 30 minutes to find the right information and he's been used to using it on a regular basis for over a year now!

I find it very frustrating that it gets said more information will be available on SG website..... Good luck trying to find it and I know the wording to search for on Google and can generally navigate around it.
They also don't remove superceded information so that adds to the confusion!

GreenlandTheMovie · 25/03/2021 09:33

Yes, it's very confusing trying to work out what rules apply in Scotland and to whom.

There's just too much legislation. Why do they have to change everything every few years? I'm a landlord and I pay the local authority a small fortune in licences, registrations and carry out as many as 12 annual safety checks. Never mind the latest rule change they have come up with for HMOs (last year it was fireproof letterboxes). I set aside £2000 a year for dealing with it all.

Then there's all the time they devote to banning stuff. Scotland must surely be the most regulated country in the world now, at least in the property market?

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 25/03/2021 10:43

I agree that finding information is difficult at times.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 25/03/2021 10:45

Whenever asked if it the page was useful I think I've ticked yes once!

UnderHisAye · 25/03/2021 10:49

I wonder if anyone ever looks at the stats on that @RaindropsSplashRainbows

I'd guess not!

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 25/03/2021 10:55

I remember the tiny moment of joy I get when something works right.
