Ooooh, yes. Fantastic news jellycat! Well done to you and the school!

NotAnActualSheep · 19/02/2021 15:57

One good thing tacked onto the end of the briefing, was that they seem to be not considering requiring medical grade masks in public settings any more . Which is a relief.

WannaCapybara · 19/02/2021 16:18

And I took an absolute pasting on an old thread for pointing out that saying masks were being looked into along with other measures did not mean it was a done deal!

I know - I was so happy when SNP won and thought that NS was one of the best politicians of our time I really really liked her - I'm so shocked at how much I dislike her now. She's on a total power trip and a one party government worries the hell out of me for our democracy going forward.

Unfortunately many don't see this or don't care so they'll be back in power again and forgetting that they are meant to represent everyone rather than just the people who happen to agree with them. Around a quarter of the available electorate voted for them and so here we are.

kurtrussellsbeard · 19/02/2021 16:28

Can someone explain to me what it is that NS is doing so differently to other leaders in this pandemic situation that makes her a maniac on a power trip? Because I genuinely don't see it or know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well done. Here's your badge StarGrin Let me wash off some of the paste for you in an apologetic fashion.

I confess I do a lot more reading between the lines of announcements than is probably intended. But to be fair it is often needed! I could sit back and relax and wait for them to announce what they're going to announce at a time that suits them without having done any mental or practical preparation then to be berated for bring unprepared, and that everyone could see what was coming... March school closures I'm looking at you But where's the fun in that?!

OldRailer · 19/02/2021 16:36

NotAnActualSheep this is what's happened with me.

I was caught out thinking my area was far from getting put in a worse tier (because I was looking at actual cases here.) Turns out they'd been trailing it beforehand and I had stopped watching.🤦 So yes I tend to look on the bleak side / believe what they are threatening, when they trail stuff.

Question seconded Grin

I mean, furlough is being extended in England, so clearly they don't anticipate hospitality being back before June/July either.

NotAnActualSheep · 19/02/2021 16:55

Reminds me of that story/ joke about a family who's cat died. Dad said to the children "sorry, the cat's died" and they were very upset. Mum took him to one side and said, "no, don't break bad news like that... you need to build them up to it, so you should have said something like, 'the cat's stuck up a tree and we can't get her down' , and then a bit later, 'oh no, she's fallen into next doors garden and looks like she's hurt her leg' and then 'when we went to get her she scurried away and was hit by a bus' Then they are more prepared for the bad news, see". The next day Dad went to see his dad in hospital. When he got back, he gathered the family together and said "kids, I've got some bad news... Grandpa is stuck up a tree..."

NotAnActualSheep · 19/02/2021 16:57

Obviously in this case John Swinney medical masks were just stuck in a tree, and not a precursor to any more bad news...

MaxNormal · 19/02/2021 17:17

@kurtrussellsbeard the hotel quarantine measures is the first thing that springs to mind. Have to have that stricter twist of everyone quarantining, but of course utterly pointless as it only applies if you're on a flight that lands direct from internationally into Scotland, of which there were already precious few and are now presumably none. Transit in from England and you don't have to bother.

We also had far less easing of restrictions last summer compared to England and have spent much less time legally able to go into other people's houses.

They have also made the stay in your local council area thing legally enforcable whereas I believe it's advisory in England.

There's probably more but that's just off the top of my head.

So far..... Softplays haven't been open in a year (they were allowed in England in lower tiers never allowed in Scotland) Created a law making it illegal for people to cross the Scottish border to England and NI Made quarantine hotels mandatory for all travellers including offshore oil and gas workers arriving home from Norwegian/Dutch sectors Shut worship places (not the case in England) Banned music in restaurants and pubs when they were open Zero reopening of any live events or theatres (there was limited and controlled opening in England)

These are just a few of the differences that spring to mind

kurtrussellsbeard · 19/02/2021 17:33

With the exception of the quarantine rule for workers which does seem unfair these are tiny, tiny differences.

English churches can open for individual prayer only.

Travel is advised against everywhere.

Soft play? Really? That seems like a good idea in a pandemic.

Bytheloch · 19/02/2021 17:34

Nurseries in England didn’t close.

jabbathebutt · 19/02/2021 17:35

nurseries closed here when they aren't in England

Some SNP supporters cannot and will not see anything wrong.

anon444877 · 19/02/2021 17:36

what max and scottish said plus the wording of the highlights of the road map announced on Tuesday - so at easter no travel within 'Scotland' or 'Abroad' and summer 'staycation' may be possible.

Now if you have all of your family and many dear friends in RUK, that is worrying and evasive. Nicola could have clearly stated that a staycation meant anywhere in UK and the fact she didn't makes me worried that she means to try and fine people for seeing their relatives in RUK when she opens up Scotland.

call me as paranoid as you like but Scotland isn't yet an independent country but clearly she has powers to fine people for travelling, so how do I know that she won't introduce fines for people travelling outside of Scotland in the Summer?

anon444877 · 19/02/2021 17:39

what's the definition of a tiny difference, one that doesn't affect you?

kurtrussellsbeard · 19/02/2021 17:39

No I really can't. There are slight differences in the restrictions. Our cases and deaths are lower. I know which I'd rather have.

Some people only want to see the bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

StarryEyeSurprise · 19/02/2021 17:41

We know England is the country with the most deaths per pop in the world so I'm unsure why people still think the FM should be doing what Johnson has.
Lots and lots of countries have put in place border controls relating to non essential travel.
The pp asked what the FM has done that others haven't. Seems you're comparing only to Johnson's handling of the pandemic. 🙈

Bytheloch · 19/02/2021 17:43

call me as paranoid as you like but Scotland isn't yet an independent country but clearly she has powers to fine people for travelling, so how do I know that she won't introduce fines for people travelling outside of Scotland in the Summer?

And if that isn’t the intention, why not have one of those conversations where we’re treated like grown ups (as promised by the FM in 2020) and reassure us otherwise. Instead, we’re drip fed threats and nuggets of information, talked to like we’re naughty children. If we don’t behave or do good listening there’ll be consequences.

Anyway, smoke and mirrors. Roll on next week...

kurtrussellsbeard · 19/02/2021 17:44

Churches closed v open for individual prayer
Soft play closed v open for a couple weeks in the summer
Legally not allowed to travel v not allowed to travel
Nurseries open to key worker abs vulnerable v nurseries open
Quarantine from abroad v quarantine from 33 countries

Power hungry maniac v totally reasonable

Do me a favour.

StarryEyeSurprise · 19/02/2021 17:47

Also not all nurseries have been open in England during January. Only some.

MaxNormal · 19/02/2021 17:47

But all the things you mention are huge and potentially life-ruining to those at the sharp end. Easy enough to dismiss as no big deal if you're not much personally affected.

StarryEyeSurprise · 19/02/2021 17:49

Also P1-3 back in school weeks before England and NI ( don't know about the plans in Wales).

kurtrussellsbeard · 19/02/2021 17:51

@MaxNormal the quarantine one is shit I've said that in another post. I think that workers should be exempt and I'm sorry for your personal circumstances.

Everything else is completely sensible given the circumstances.
