Again it might be worth looking at English covid heat maps before making sweeping statements. The whole of England isn't at crazy levels just like the whole of Scotland isn't the same levels as Clackmannanshire or Glasgow! There are large regional differences in infection rates.

kurtrussellsbeard · 21/02/2021 17:14

@StarryEyeSurprise it really does. But like you say we're so used to it it's like water of a ducks back.

Of course.

Just catching up with the news...
Good news... We could all have the vaccine by end of July. Which is amazing if they can pull it off. As a healthy ish 40something I was assuming it would be well into the autumn and possibly winter by the time it rolled out to us, but July (or earlier) is actually a date I can picture!

Not so good news - Case numbers in Scotland seem stubbornly stuck around 800, and have been for aaaaaages now. I know deaths and hospitalisations are declining due to the vaccine, but if we need to get to our magic 50 per 100k cases for anything to happen, I just can't see when that will be. Pah....

StarryEyeSurprise · 21/02/2021 18:18

Ugh, yeah. I think there lots of cases in prisons at the moment. How do we stop that- imagine the outcry if prisoners were vaccinated ASAP!
Also, I don't know what effect staff in education being tested twice weekly will have on the stats. I think it's not an actual positive unless a lateral positive is backed up by a positive on the test we normally use but guess it means more asymptomatic positives .

ladylunchalot · 21/02/2021 18:21

I think cases might increase slightly as my local healthboard are now saying to get tested if you have to self isolate even if you don't have symptoms. You still need to isolate for the 10 days. Assuming this is going to be Scotland wide? Think it's to try and pick up more asymptomatic cases.

WannaCapybara · 21/02/2021 18:25

Anyone who whines about vaccinating prisoners is an arsehole. I don't give a single fuck what people like that have to say. Nor should politicians.

Scottishskifun · 21/02/2021 18:28

@notanactualsheep I really hope it does apply UK wide but part of me is sceptical as it was the PM who said it rather than NS and my health board isn't very high up on vaccines delivered and our local centre has been closed past few weekends (and never open on a Sunday). I know supply slowed down for a few weeks but I am hoping that the postcode lottery of vaccination timings gets resolved and quickly!

ShowmetheSnowdrops · 21/02/2021 18:29

Prisoners don’t look after themselves.
I would hope that prison staff are vaccinated and that their job is as safe as it can be so that may mean vaccinating prisoners before other more ‘worthy’ members of society.
Not a job I would want in a million years.

NotAnActualSheep · 21/02/2021 18:47

Yes, if it is an area of risk absolutely prisoners should be vaccinated ASAP, if only (and of course it's not only, as we are still a moral society recognising prisoners have rights too!) to protect the prison staff.

I suppose there may be an increase in asymptomatic/ non typical cases as a result of increased testing. Though in practice, the student testing before Christmas actually picked up very little of that (maybe because they'd already all had it?!) so it may not happen. I don't know any numbers for how many people self isolating as contacts have actually ended up testing positive...only anecdata, but I get the feeling that's the exception rather than the rule. I know there is the "fear" of asymptomatic infection, but I don't think that's as common as symptomatic infection (even mild) in adults at least, and maybe half of children? So if, say 1 in 100 contacts ended up testing positive because they came down with symptoms, I wouldn't expect any more than 2 in 100 to test positive from obligatory testing. In any case, it will hopefully decrease the %positive numbers Grin

Yeah.. Could be. I've also had the wind taken out of my sails that it's only "offered" by then. So they could schedule loads of appointments months in advance and send invites, but you don't actually get it til September... Mind you, that would involve some degree of forward planning and logistics, so I may be overthinking...

Scottishskifun · 21/02/2021 19:00

I hope they do prioritise KW first such as teachers, police prison officers etc. But will be ironic and slightly frustrating as my DH will then get vaccinated before me even though I'm asthmatic and greater risk as they changed the criteria!

Lockdownbear · 21/02/2021 19:06

I think offered is the word because not everyone will take up the chance.

BJ has made some screwups and would have been crucified if he'd spent £££ on vaccines that didn't work. But his gamble has paid off big time.

kurtrussellsbeard · 21/02/2021 19:07

Still all feels like progress! Thank God!

Some teachers have been vaccinated but only those working with complex needs. I hope prison / police officers have too but I don't know. Surely they run the same risk of complex needs teachers with people spitting etc.
Scottishskifun · 21/02/2021 19:20

Yes they do but as a whole haven't been prioritised. I have a few friends who are police officers who have been vaccinated with surplus/open vial so would go in the bin otherwise but this again is dependent on the area and the time.

I just hope this latest promise isn't part of his great reopening plan, and will turn out to be a bit of a PR stunt to make people feel hopeful.
Scottishskifun · 21/02/2021 19:28

I think it's more probable he knows something about the approvals of the other vaccines they have also bought millions of doses of so can speed it up as they will have more doses available.

Have to give the UK govt their dues on vaccinations it was a massive undertaking that they have got right my vaccination date has dropped from Dec to Sept, then Aug and now hopefully July! Governments aren't usually known for delivery projects 6 months early!

kurtrussellsbeard · 21/02/2021 19:33

@Scottishskifun totally. And credit where it's due 👏🏻

StarryEyeSurprise · 21/02/2021 19:43

It is great but I'm still worried about the fact that the UK's the only group of countries that have extended the time period between doses , beyond the manufacturers guidance.

StarryEyeSurprise · 21/02/2021 19:50

Och ignore that as the thread was becoming quite positive. I'll keep my niggley thoughts to myself. ;)

NotAnActualSheep · 21/02/2021 19:56

This with bells on! I'm hoping against all odds this is the one that isn't going to be cocked up at the last minute....

kurtrussellsbeard · 21/02/2021 19:57

Can't be helped @StarryEyeSurprise ! Better out than in.

Tomorrowisanewday · 21/02/2021 21:45

I got a phone call last night, offering me an appointment on Wednesday, which I can't manage, but they gave me an alternative on Saturday morning. They did say that was the last day of appointments they were scheduling at the moment so I'm very glad to have got it.

I'm over 50 with an underlying health condition but still thought it would be may, going by the calculator
