Here's hoping the thread title doesn't turn out to be aspirational!

Bytheloch · 12/02/2021 16:51

Thanks for the new thread.

Picking up from the last thread, school hints this afternoon. All bets on that they’re going for zero-or close to-rates in Scotland.

Bytheloch · 12/02/2021 16:53

Latest tweet:
Based on what John Swinney said... if Scot Gov does choose not to go ahead with Feb 22 schools phased return, they would presumably have to argue re ICU admissions going up, and not the big picture. Seems a stretch

ssd · 12/02/2021 16:56

Thanks @Cismyfatarse

Yes,just heard on radio theres more people in ICU now than last week and because of this schools may not open on 22 Feb now?
Bloody hell.

StarryEyeSurprise · 12/02/2021 16:58

Ugh! That's not good.

ToooOldForThis · 12/02/2021 17:00

I'm sure it was Jason leitch

NotAnActualSheep · 12/02/2021 17:02

Thanks cis. Not sure if I want the title to be aspirational or not!

Can I add an eek, a groan and an oh, ffs to the school non- opening rumours. I have been wondering if that is where we would go, given The Scottish Numbers are on such a slow decline, and that's with full lockdown... Not looked at England specifically, but UK wide it seems to be much faster, though that may just be because we've been in lockdown for a week or so longer and the uk will start levelling off too, if it's something to do with variants or whatever. It's so frustrating, though. At some point, surely, they'll have to say, well, this is our background and we just have to rely on the vaccine to do its stuff and prevent "cases" from being hospitalised or dying. We can't keep schools (and everything else) closed much longer when we have vaccinated a quarter of the population, and the most vulnerable quarter at that. Please?!

Coquohvan · 12/02/2021 17:04

Did SG not try the elimination route after 1st wave? Did not work then. Best to crack on with vaccination, hopefully cases will keep dropping week on week as vaccines takes hold.
Why is Fife vaccinations so low? Any ideas.

I am curious about the hospitalisations, I am not brilliant with data but they don't look to be coming down. I know there's a lag but they seem higher than a few weeks ago.

I suppose in that context any increase in contact represents an increase in transmissions and so hospitalisations. With the new strain most things are less possible and more risky.

Bytheloch · 12/02/2021 17:08

Let’s also acknowledge the ICU figures relate to those cases which developed AFTER hospital admission. Nothing new to fear in community transmission.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/02/2021 17:12

On the postal voting thing: we went postal several elections ago. Juggling work, nursery / childminder pick-ups, shopping and weather it just made life easier. So, it's not just the "oldies" who do it. Hmm

If you do an online grocery shop, you might as well register for a postal vote.

Bytheloch · 12/02/2021 17:13

In the meantime, teachers, children, parents and childcare settings have a long wait until Tuesday, whilst the public mood is measured after the hints today.
Happy weekend everyoneAngry

I've done it before when I've been traveling for work. I'll do it again this year, although the ten minute walk to the community centre would have been super exciting, let's face it.

Does that not just mean their condition worsened at some point after admission?
ssd · 12/02/2021 17:21

I think on the radio they said there were more people in icu due to this new variant being more infectious.
I think the whole problem is the way it mutated and the fact it's taken this long to try to control the borders. Basically its running bloody rife, even though we're stuck at home bored stuff .

Christ only knows what's next.

I was wondering that too about Fife (and Edinburgh/ lothians too). There seems huge discrepancy across the country. I know NHS Lothian were saying last week they didn't think their "community" vaccinations had been counted, but I'd have thought they'd have got those numbers fixed now. Possibly a generally younger population so a lower proportion of folk in the vulnerable categories, though can't see why that would apply to Fife?!
Scottishskifun · 12/02/2021 17:23

I don't think they will delay the nurseries for the whole country most of the areas above the central belt are now getting very low with single figure daily cases.
Its difficult to argue when the whole country is old money tier 3 levels as well.
They know there will be a big backlash!

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 12/02/2021 17:23

I don't know either, and I'm in Fife so I'd like to know!

Our town has vaccinated all the over 80s definitely, and the community centre is vaccinating every weekend from now until May.

I think I feel Hmmabout it because I live two miles from Dundee which is doing brilliantly.

Bytheloch · 12/02/2021 17:25

After admission for other medical issues, presumably already clinically vulnerable. Not sure we should be raising alarms about community cases, or whether the schools should now not return, based on this latest ICU data.

Unless of course, it’s to feed into a new narriative and justify border control. Zero covid in Scotland🧐

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 12/02/2021 17:27

Probably not. Fife has about 20-30 cases a day. I mean, I don't want to send the kids back until it's safe, I just think I've lost sight of when that is!

I'm fucked off today a bit. Boring job boring house boring snow.
