A lot of people catch it after being admitted to hospital for something else. There were 358 hospital acquired infections recorded for the week to 17th January; 960 for the 28 days before that.

Those were latest reported figures I saw.

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst

On the postal voting thing: we went postal several elections ago. Juggling work, nursery / childminder pick-ups, shopping and weather it just made life easier. So, it's not just the "oldies" who do it. Hmm

If you do an online grocery shop, you might as well register for a postal vote.

But but but, going to the church hall to vote may be the only thing I get to do inside by May... Grin I've been annoyed by postal votes before, in that they seemed to register me permanently when I only wanted a pv for a single election, and it was a faff getting back to be registered to vote "normally"... but that may just have been a blip for me, as the form does allow for a one-time pv so I assume ticking that box works for most people! I'm also a bit worried about the admin if there is a huge glut of people all applying for pvs. I foresee some delays in forms arriving, not being able to get them back within the deadline and so on. It's making me twitchy already.
blowinahoolie · 12/02/2021 17:29

They cannot back track now, nurseries have to go back. DH planning to book annual leave first week nursery goes back, so he can get some respite. Like so many, it's been non stop.

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel I am about 2 mikes from you (or thereabouts). Just a bit further up by the rail bridge.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 12/02/2021 17:34

They don't have to go back though, the decision hasn't been made.

I have also considered taking a few days off when my kids finally do go back too, totally get it!

Cismyfatarse · 12/02/2021 17:34

2 miles

Blooming autocorrect.

2 Mikes is much, much further away.

Ahh near the new houses? Drove through there last weekend on the way for a wander at Balmerino. My fave place.

Waves! 👋

@ssd

I think on the radio they said there were more people in icu due to this new variant being more infectious. I think the whole problem is the way it mutated and the fact it's taken this long to try to control the borders. Basically its running bloody rife, even though we're stuck at home bored stuff .

Christ only knows what's next.

That could be right about the ICU figures reflecting infectiousness, but I had assumed it didn't work like that. I thought the variant(s) were more spready, so more people were infected, but that of those people infected, roughly the same proportion went on to develop severe disease. So as cases have been declining (despite it being more spready, because we're all staying the fuck at home) I'd have assumed ICU cases would also have declined (albeit on a 2-3 week lag). But ICU rising suggests its because its actually more harmful, which is a bugger, but I'm not sure why this would only have been seen in the past week or so, when the dominant margarine variant has been around and prevalent since Christmas.
Cismyfatarse · 12/02/2021 17:37

Below that. On the shore but yes.

We nearly purchased a house that is now staring into the second wave of new houses. Luckily, we got this one as they seem to be cramming in a lot of people.

Sorry include am seriously clutching at straws now and had enough. Trying to keep positive. Cracks are starting to show! 😬

NotAnActualSheep · 12/02/2021 17:41

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel

Probably not. Fife has about 20-30 cases a day. I mean, I don't want to send the kids back until it's safe, I just think I've lost sight of when that is!

I'm fucked off today a bit. Boring job boring house boring snow.

I know what you mean! It's all so boring now. I've spent the afternoon looking at shampoo bars (not sure if that was on this thread or another one!) which is how thrilling my life is...
Lockdownbear · 12/02/2021 17:42

Checking in, thanks for new thread.

anon444877 · 12/02/2021 17:43

I've had an exciting day, slipped over in my shower this morning and landed on my tailbone - really painful. If they don't go back I may have to take some more unpaid time off to quietly despair.

Yes, I was a bit shocked when we drove past! We almost looked at them when we were selling but luckily something came up in our town. I would be so pissed off if I lived on that road and had my view of the rolling fields blocked.

Yes, this is bad, especially given the overall numbers of people in hospital compared to the rest of the country. But as there are about 1000 ish cases across Scotland a day (slightly less now, maybe... 800 or so?) having 50ish of them acquired in hospital still means its a minority overall (though there obviously needs to be consideration of where they are going after discharge, and whether their families/ carers are then at risk) Could explain some of the community acquired infections I assume.
WouldBeGood · 12/02/2021 17:54

Yes, I assume it then drives community transmission to an extent too. And that week around half of people in hospital had caught it there. So it’s relevant from that perspective too.

I dont if people realise that when a nurse tests positive and isolates, the nurses that worked with her dont then self isolate too, as they wear ppe and social distance...so you could have a ward if nurses working together, one tests positive and the rest have to keep coming to work, rather than them isolating like the rest of the population. No wonder folk are catching it in hospital.
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 12/02/2021 18:18

I think there'll be a lot of seriously pissed off people if they roll back on the schools opening on the 22nd. Everyone has been preparing for and expecting kids to return (and yes I know they did the usual 'tbc' thing but the narrative was pretty certain kids would be back). The nurseries surely have to go back at the very least - frankly they should never have shut as there was never evidence of spread from kids that young. I think Scotland was the only UK nation not to keep them open - certainly England and Wales kept them open for all (and still have a steep fall in cases despite apparently having more of the super spready strain).

jabbathebutt · 12/02/2021 18:52

the talk above about houses has made me miss having a nosey at new houses which I have no intention of buying Grin.

Have to content myself with regular searches on right move, which DH says is "porn for women" Grin

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 12/02/2021 18:56

Where would you live in Scotland if you could choose?

I think I'd go for an apartment in Edinburgh just off the Royal Mile and somewhere in The Highlands for the peace Grin

Pootle40 · 12/02/2021 19:02

I don't think we need to panic about hospital numbers. There are 322 less people today in hospital who are positive for Covid than a week ago. 8 less in ICU. It will come down again no doubt tomorrow or Sunday.

Scottishskifun · 12/02/2021 19:03

I would love to live in the outer hebrides if they would fly directly to Amsterdam or Paris for connecting flights! 😂

I already live in a coastal town which is pretty quiet but house prices and any workman is bonkers money! But we can easily get skiing which I love......when they open!

goodname · 12/02/2021 19:04

I didn’t notice this thread had started and posted on the old one 😊. I’ll post again even though it’s kind of out of date now
Yep I listened to the briefing and thought “oh crap”. My kids are in older primaries but my friends with younger kids are finding it so hard to work form home. There’s not that much difference between p1/2 and nursery for level of attention needed.
Also if they don’t go back in February when on earth are the rest going back. It would be pretty bad for schools that are getting all organised as well I guess.
The reason given was that we seem to have got stuck around the 800 cases a day and it’s not getting lower because the new variants so contagious. I winder if we even can get lower then? Maybe this is just how many cases well keep getting from people working or going into hospital etc. In that case will it ever get better?

goodname · 12/02/2021 19:13

I actually quite like Fife 😀
