Have you seen the covid quarantine cost? Any flight coming in has mandatory quarantine with a cost of £1750, so £175 a night? Sheesh, hope it's luxury accommodation.

Dinnafashyersel · 09/02/2021 15:35

I find myself on the fence re the briefings. Otoh I think a press release would be adequate. Otoh at least NS is taking ownership for the decisions rather than passing the buck to advisers and there is more oversight from opposition parties than there was.

I don't watch them or the UK ones and haven't since March. Changes outside of the briefings happen regularly and more so the more unpalatable. The format of information is neither consistent nor comprehensive.

Lockdownbear · 09/02/2021 15:36

That's a crazy blow for the travel industry. Is that across the UK or just Scotland?

If its just Scotland It will be almost impossible to police the folks who fly from Manchester Newcastle or Liverpool.

Scotland at the moment. In rUK it's only from countries in the red areas and no announcement of cost etc yet.

And yes, penalising our own airports as people will simply fly to and fro via English airports and also penalising honest folk because they said they had a system to enforce quarantine when people were allowed to fly and they didn't.

Lockdownbear · 09/02/2021 15:43

Does she think folk button up the back?
Is she wanting a hard border at Carlisle?

blowinahoolie · 09/02/2021 15:44

I will be all ears on Tuesday for Nicola's briefing.

StarryEyeSurprise · 09/02/2021 15:45

Hmm, can't say I'm too sad about the person I know who's having an amazing holiday having to pay that when they come back.

titsbumfannythelot · 09/02/2021 15:48

So we still think we can eliminate Covid then, judging by the quarantine strategy?

I wish I was having an amazing holiday rather than wallowing in this relentless shitshow.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/02/2021 15:56

But once again, it's down to the lowest common denominator. Some folk can't be trusted to stay at home so everyone needs to be punished.

DH is NHS so can only take his holidays in blocks of 1 week or two (or occasional days but not added to 2 week summer hols) so we don't have any option to go abroad unless it was for a weekend then 10 days in an airport hotel. Okay, we accept that we can't have a foreign holiday.

That's a shocking cost though as presume there is no daily housekeeping and restricted to room service for food. It's about twice what you'd pay booking independently.

So are folk going to pay that or simply fly into Newcastle and drive home? (Even if they are going to quarantine at home).

jabbathebutt · 09/02/2021 16:02

when is the quarantine rules starting? now? or do people have time to get home before they need to pay?

What if people refuse to pay / can't pay? Also who is going to stop them just walking out glasgow airport anyway?

This could cost them votes.....hopeful

jabbathebutt · 09/02/2021 16:05

she's just trying to emphasise that Scotland is different and independent, nothing to do with it being necessary. Like a PP said, she thinks we button up the back.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/02/2021 16:09

Starts from next Monday, so the 15th.

jabbathebutt · 09/02/2021 16:10

DSis in the states getting her jag in March. Apparently whole state getting vacc'd and they are not doing it by age but every state is different. The state she's in is utilising the military to deliver the vaccine.

jabbathebutt · 09/02/2021 16:10

forgot to say DSis is in her 30s. No underlying health issues.

Bytheloch · 09/02/2021 16:12

Hmm, how about if you land in a regional airport you have to declare on a landing card if you have a Scotland main residence? You supply your car registration or travel details for return to Scotland. By car you’re pulled over by Police Scotland as soon as you cross the unicorn border and you pay a fine fee? By train fine fee is issued by the Transport Police.
Just me pondering, haven’t seen that anywhere.

StarryEyeSurprise · 09/02/2021 16:16

How much are the quarantine hotels in the rest of the UK? I'm quite sure it's done to try and persuade people not to go on holiday abroad just now and I agree with that stance. Also, re people coming home from years abroad etc, it's no different to what other countries require people to do ( I know someone in that category too).

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/02/2021 16:20

No announcement from rUK re cost etc but as it stands you can still return from any travel corridor country with no restriction. I'm not up on how many of those we still have and it's a movable feast I guess.

kurtrussellsbeard · 09/02/2021 16:20

@StarryEyeSurprise same cost but in England you can quarantine at home unless you've come from one of 33 red list countries and then you have to make use of the quarantine hotel.

I agree. Better safe than sorry. It's clearly the mutations they're worried about. Imagine they just casually let in a variant that scuppered the vaccine. There would be an uproar.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/02/2021 16:22

BBC says this re cost for rUK

One hospitality industry source said the government estimated the cost at about £80 per night per person.

kurtrussellsbeard · 09/02/2021 16:24

According to the BBC the cost is the same if coming from one of the 33 red list countries. It's also on the GOV website.

But how long do you continue that for. Viruses mutate. All the time. I know Covid isn't flu but the principle is the same - we tweak the flu vaccine each year because the flu in 2020 isn't the same as the flu in 2015 or 2000. We might have to do the same with Covid vaccines - big deal. The vulnerable get a Covid jag every year along with their flu vaccination.

What we can't do is pull the drawbridge up and not let anyone in, ever. In case they bring Covid with them, forever. It's all posturing anyway - there is at the moment only ONE international flight each day into a Scottish airport (a Doha flight into Edinburgh). The way she goes on you'd think there were thousands of people coming in every day.

We are not going to eradicate this virus and Sturgeon needs to stop talking as if she can. Vaccination will maybe not even reduce cases - but if it turns a life-threatening or fatal illness into just another winter bug in vulnerable groups then job done.

kurtrussellsbeard · 09/02/2021 16:33

It's a hefty price tag though I will say that! The Scottish Government have set up a welfare fund to help people who can't afford it meet the payment. Doesn't say anything about criteria though.

Coquohvan · 09/02/2021 16:34

I am for quarantine for now; as the scientists are saying the virus mutates like the flu. No one knows how or when next mutation will happen. Until we have most vaccinated then there will be changes. Anyone who tries to circumnavigate the system they deserve all they get.
Hmm these daily broadcasts aren’t needed, perhaps one or two a week unless something is happening or any further updates on restrictions etc

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/02/2021 16:35

The link on the front page of the BBC took me to a different article with an estimated payment that is 4 days old - no wonder we end up with conflicting information.

kurtrussellsbeard · 09/02/2021 16:36

@RaspberryCoulis I get the frustration but they're acting on scientific advice and something about these variants clearly has everyone spooked. Elimination may well not be possible but think it's very clear that controlling it is vital.
I'm also not sure how helpful the comparisons to the flu are. There are countless flu variants but the flu doesn't cause this level of carnage nor does it exert the same level of strain on the NHS.
