@StarryEyeSurprise that's a fab pic.

WouldBeGood · 08/02/2021 21:51

@jabbathebutt that’s not really how it works. People need to be able to talk about what they want

Lockdownbear · 08/02/2021 21:53

She also doesn’t seem to understand it affects maths as well as literacy as all the strategies and words used in maths these days seem very confusing to the dyslexic brain

Seriously, it's taken me ages to get my head round the partitioning method of adding. I don't think I do it right be it basically seems that you start at the highest digit and work your way down to the units.
Burst you head stuff. But I never thought dyslexia could be part of my issue.

Mmmm, me barely getting my head round it, him not grasping it either, might just be part of the issue in this house.

My conclusion is teaching is some form of Magic that only those with the skill and patience of Dumbledore can master!

Coming back to this morning's discussion of large scale events. Turns out all the press reports of them being on hold forever were more than a bit hyperbolic. They came from a misquote of Tim Spector (Zoe App). He has just clarified that what he actually said was that as the events industry returns, hopefully in the Summer, they will need to be careful about whether and what enhanced regulation is necessary - so actually very much in line with what we were all saying.

🤦‍♀️ I have to ban myself from the news some days. The continued mountain out of molehill reporting strategy isn't good for my blood pressure.
Lockdownbear · 08/02/2021 23:04

Dinnafash that makes more sense.
It certainly makes sense that some precautions are necessary for large scale events.

On Saturday I read a headline out to DH, Crowds could return to football next season. He miss heard "Christ could return" 🤪🤣.

But again define 'large' 100 people in front of a band at a wedding is still totally different to 50,000 people at a festival which is different again to 50,000 at football.

@anon444877

What's the point of the number facts of 10 (how many ways can you make 10?) Etc? Bores us to tears and struggling to see how it's so useful, we didn't do that.
I think it would aid mental arithmetic, speed and answer checking too - so if you just know that 7 and 3 give 10 then in theory you should realise that if you've come up with 7+4=10 or 17+13=29 something has gone wrong.

My DD hated partitioning methods in maths but clicked instantly with old fashioned chimney sums. Much to her teacher's irritation at the time. But different methods click for different people

Lockdownbear · 09/02/2021 00:05

Chimney method Smile here they are called Bunkbeds!

I think partitioning is harder to learn but easier to do in your head once you've got it.

Perihelion · 09/02/2021 00:21

Drugs, especially street valium can be cheaper than alcohol. Also due to the Challenge 25 ID, it can be easier for under 18's to buy drugs.

goodname · 09/02/2021 03:56

@Lockdownbear partitioning is our problem this week! Ds can already do the math in his head pretty fast. I think we will just skip it 😬
Can’t imagine events back in Scotland this summer, I just can’t but happy to be proven wrong. Would be nice to have something to do in the staycations (I do hate that word)
Can’t sleep, woke up thinking angry thoughts about 49 page maths powerpoints and can’t get back to sleep

blowinahoolie · 09/02/2021 07:22

Well it is a white outShock

shouldistop · 09/02/2021 07:37

Lots of excitement in our house about the snow Grin Just getting everyone fed, watered and dressed then out the door!

Neeko · 09/02/2021 08:09

@goodname
Not a solution, but might help a little. Is your son's work set on Teams? If so, does he know how to access immersive reader to have the written parts read out to him? I've shown all my classes how to do this during our live lessons and I know loads of them are using it, not just the ones with dyslexia.
Apologies if you know this already. It won't help with partitioning though!
I personally find it really confusing that pupils learn so many different maths' strategies now. It's admirable that they are trying to appeal to different thinking processes but it seems to muddle a lot of children - and parents!

Groovee · 09/02/2021 08:32

Have cleared the driveway. It's very powdery. DD's work have told her to do her Covid test tomorrow. Dh will still need to go for his. Then I have an afternoon tea to pick up.

New Fred. It nearly ended in tiers.
Tomorrowisanewday · 09/02/2021 08:36

kurtrusselsbeard - I'm old, so would have thought the same as you. However, a couple of my staff are early to mid twenties, and according to them, drugs are cheaper than buying alcohol when they're out.

anon444877 · 09/02/2021 09:01

Oooh snow - hard to be uncheered. News has whipped up fear through out. I've lost count of the 'you're never going on holiday' stories, and 'that vaccine may not work'.

Thanks statistically

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/02/2021 09:10

We've already had arguments about appropriate clothes this morning. No, you can't go sledging in leggings put your bloody waterproofs on!

Snow very pretty, but argument inducing

mondaywine · 09/02/2021 09:11

I started primary in 1980 and always believed I did mental arithmetic incorrectly. I know that sounds crazy but I didn’t do it the way the teachers told us and I never told anyone how I got my answers. It was only when I started teacher training in 1998 that I discovered how I did it had a name and was a perfectly fine strategy. I have always been someone who taught lots of strategies in my classroom. I think it’s good to know lots of different ways to calculate.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/02/2021 09:26

It's definitely good to know different ways - the problem we had was a teacher who was very fixed on one method. She didn't seem to have a range of strategies or appreciate that not every strategy suited every kid. Very much "well this is the modern way, and it's better"

Groovee · 09/02/2021 09:41

Dh phoned the GP... receptionist said oh we'll sign you off for 2 weeks. GP called back. He's not happy with 2 weeks so he's off until 2nd March. He can take my mum to her vaccine at ingliston.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 09/02/2021 10:01

A silver lining in every cloud, Groovee.

Dinnafashyersel · 09/02/2021 10:04

I have a real lazy daisy sitting watching the snow in her jammies and reading her book. Hope it stays all day or there will be tears if she misses the boat. I had to do my ironing to warm up but now MNing next to the radiator at the window.

The thing about number facts is that they are fixed. So you can just memorise them. goodname if your DS can do the sums in his head I wouldn't worry too much about the various methods. My older 2 (Uni age studying Maths) reckon they barely remember any of them now and either do things in their head, simplify via equations or plug it in a calculator.

It is frustrating that so many DC still seem to get put off Maths by frustrations with arithmetic. Very similar to SpaG impeding literacy.

Coquohvan · 09/02/2021 10:48

Good about your hubby & mum @Groovee.

Had our vaccine this morning thank god DH has a 4x4 our village has had a real dump of snow.
Got the Pfizer vaccine and the Dr who did me said I’d get lettered for 2 NS doze. Me being me asked any idea when, he said around 6weeks as they have got plenty off stock. Really well organised in and out in 20 mins counted 20 vaccinating tables. Took away a very in-depth 4 piece leaflet about vaccine used BNT162b2. Was is our local community theatre building in next town plenty parking Marshall’s clearing show and gritting walkways.

shouldistop · 09/02/2021 11:04

Back home now for hot showers & lunch. Probably back out later.

Good to hear of more people being jabbed.

Cismyfatarse · 09/02/2021 11:53

It is MiL's 87th birthday so DH has dug the car out and gone to see her. They were going for a drive but might not be able to. Meanwhile, I am baking and making posh tea so she can come round and get stuffed full of cake, meringues and sandwiches.

I am quite enjoying myself. I am pretty successful professionally and yet MiL only ever notices when I can do domestic things. She loves meringues which are, as everyone knows, dead easy. However, she has elevated me to some sort of domestic goddess based on this one thing (DH does most of the cooking).

I am not sure whether to protest that they are just meringues or enjoy the fact that she is, finally, after 25 years, impressed with something I can do.

The grandchildren are all down to her genes, of course.
