I think it said healthy life expectancy was 47 in deprived areas did it not?

Lockdownbear · 31/01/2021 01:23

Whether Scotland was in or out with trade deals, the amount of European trucks that I seem to see means we'd need some sort of trading agreement.
Two things of the top of my head wine and whisky (its Saturday nightGrin) heavy stuff to fly.
What motivation would England have to allow us to cart that stuff from Carlisle to Dover?
It's of no benefit to them, costs them money in road maintenance, increases their pollution levels.
I've just concluded that they'd slap some sort of road toll on it or we'd be paying a higher ferry charge to get it to Rosyth (and money for bigger docks). Its stuff I never really thought about until the vaccine / NI thing came up. I'm glad I was out voted in the Indy Referendum.

Yes the article said healthy life was 47 very scary.

@shouldistop definitely pop in a wee card and/or gift for the staff.

(There may be some sort of restrictions at moment but you can always check first)

Even a box of chocolates or a nice tray of cakes for the staff in your child’s room goes a long way!

Been a long time since I was in a nursery but a genuine thank you goes a long way.

shouldistop · 31/01/2021 07:19

@runningpink they were allowed to accept Christmas gifts so I think it should be fine for ds to take something in with him. I'll have a think about what to get.

Groovee · 31/01/2021 07:49

I wonder how early years in schools will go back. Monday the 15th is a holiday. Then the early years staff amongst my friends are the ones covering in school. Lots of schools couldn't cope with the numbers otherwise.

Groovee · 31/01/2021 07:49

We had to quarantine gifts for 72 hours at Christmas.

shouldistop · 31/01/2021 07:59

Maybe they did that then, his teachers didn't mention it. It was only a very exciting box of biscuits at Christmas, I'm afraid I'm not very imaginative.

shouldistop · 31/01/2021 08:01

@Groovee how do you feel about nurseries potentially opening soon?

Groovee · 31/01/2021 08:22

@shouldistop honestly no idea at the moment. I do have concerns as there have been a number of nurseries by us had to isolate due to a child under 5 testing positive. I have the fear of bringing it home to dh who is poorly. The outbreak in our school before Christmas came from the local high school passed on by older siblings. I also think it would cause outrage amongst parents who need all their children back not just 1.

But I've learned not to get hopes up as I'd love to be back normally doing my job properly which online learning for nurseries is hard

WouldBeGood · 31/01/2021 09:05

@Lockdownbear

Just a thought, in the event of Scotland independence, I can see why Scotland would want a soft border, what would Englands motivation be to have a soft border?
If Scotland is in Europe there will have to be a hard border. Which will mean we couldn’t bring meat or dairy products into Scotland from England. One of many unintended consequences as well as it bring a total pain in the arse, especially if you live near the border.

It’s quite sad. I’d like to be in Europe, and I like free travel with really no borders. Whizz down to Folkestone and eurotunnel to France. It’s seeming especially appealing now! Used to go every holiday. And bring back loads of wine. Probably not allowed now.

WouldBeGood · 31/01/2021 09:06

@Groovee how is Mr Groovee?

He's slowly turning pink. His ears have been interesting to watch turning pink. Still exhausted with no results yet. But I know from my dad it can take a while. Thanks for asking x

What are the rules again about different households mixing indoors. DD is really happy after seeing her friend (outdoors) but wants to see that same friend (indoors) for her February birthday. I'm not sure its allowed but DD is all sad and talking about being in a 'bubble' with just one friend. Argh. this is so shit for our kids.

BBC news saying social distancing might be in place for the rest of the year so that would mean WFH or blended working for the rest of the year.

Lockdownbear · 31/01/2021 09:54

WouldbeGood I never thought about meat and dairy not being allowed across the border. Or it issue for individuals who live near the border who cross it daily.
England being out of Europe and a big motivation behind that was control of borders. Means most likely they'd want a hard border.
I really don't fancy extra road tax slapped on oranges or wine because it's been driven through England. But can't see England's motivation to allow it to happen for nothing.

I think it will be a bit longer for schools to get back. I like both my kids to be looked after properly. But at the moment I'd settle for getting LO into nursery. I could cope with 9yo and HS a whole lot better if I didn't also have 4yo trying to distract or viving for attention.

Jodri · 31/01/2021 10:26

@WouldBeGood I disagree. Hard border means more controls than soft border. Dairy and meat products could go across the border if Scotland and England were independent. It’s just a matter of organising.

Whatever controls are in place now for dairy and meat products exporting from U.K. to EU the same would apply for Scotland to England if Scotland was independent AND a member of EU. We are currently doing this.

A vet certificate is now required depending on the commodity eg currently if 50% of content is dairy a vet certificate would be required.

If an independent Scotland was not in the EU and if we did not have a deal with England (think no deal Brexit) then we would have to adhere to WTO tariffs.
If Scotland and England agreed a deal then the deal conditions would be in place.

shouldistop · 31/01/2021 10:29

@Groovee yes, online learning for under 5s doesn't really work does it. My wee one likes seeing videos of his teachers but it's no replacement for the real thing.
I think we're lucky that our nursery has very few children and a big outdoor space next to it so keeping the children in small groups and outside for a lot of the day has been easier for the staff so we've had no isolations or cases. I think there has only been 1 case at the nearby primary school but of course you don't know how many people have carried it asymptotically.
I know the teachers love the kids but I'd hate to think they felt forced to return and unsafe as much as personally I'm desperate for him to get back.

Lockdownbear · 31/01/2021 10:36

Shouldi how sure are you of only one case in the local primary. Our primary opted not to tell parents if they weren't affected, ie DS mentioned that a 1/4 of his year were back today, yes they were self isolating. If he hadn't mentioned it I'd have been non the wiser.

StatisticallyChallenged · 31/01/2021 10:38

The rest of the year would send me straight over the edge I think

What age will Dd be.
Groovee · 31/01/2021 10:43

@Lockdownbear our schools had to put the letter on the school website which was how I found out there was a case at our school. Didn't name class or staff member on it. But a friend was looking at the website in preparation for the interview she had been given and she told me. We got told hours later by staff email.

We're an outdoor nursery so our attendance was great until the last week. Staff have been off sick but not Covid. The one day we had a huge dip in attendance was the pre school boosters.

But there's still that slight risk of being in school. Our breaks are indoors.

shouldistop · 31/01/2021 10:50

@Lockdownbear I suppose I can't be 100% sure, it's a pretty small school though and I believe everyone was informed of the 1 case (naming no names but of course everyone knew who was off).

WouldBeGood · 31/01/2021 11:15

@Groovee glad to hear that

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 31/01/2021 11:27

she'll be 13 @Groovee

Dinnafashyersel · 31/01/2021 11:27

Great news Mr Groovee is turning pink. Star

Some advantages to being in a clarty densely populated area with loads of big schools. All of our schools (primary and secondary) have had multiple cases every week so the stigma and finger pointing very quickly died away. In general I think people are a bit more pragmatic about risk assessment too because the idea of "zero" is so far from lived reality.
