If the SNP win a referendum on Scottish independence, what do you think the criteria will be for moving there and getting a Scottish passport?

I'm English, live in England but love Scotland. If they became independent I would definitely want to move there if at all possible (if they let me). What do you think the rules would be for moving there and citizenship?

Of course debt has been racked up because of the pandemic. This is the case for every country. Every independent country has borrowed to finance their spending on vaccines and furloughs. Scotland would be no different than any other independent country. And we have more resources than a lot of similar sized countries.

Yes, you can source lots of articles saying Scotland would suffer if we were independent. That's because WM don't want Scotland to leave the UK.

Do you deny that Scotland has a decent GDP on relation to comparably sized independent countries? We have workers and schools and industries, what is it that makes you think Scotland is uniquely incapable of being a reasonably successful independent country?

This is an interesting article on the question of how wealthy Scotland is.

Elvesaremagic · 02/02/2021 22:36

We don’t have industries though do we? Name one?

WouldBeGood · 02/02/2021 22:43

This week has shown that Scotland is not a good place to move to unless you like misogynistic and corrupt government.

WouldBeGood · 02/02/2021 22:44

And be prepared for a hard border with England if you wish to go back to visit, and rules and customs duties on what you can bring in.

CountessFrog · 02/02/2021 22:53

What about the export of square sausages?

WouldBeGood · 02/02/2021 22:56

Oh, don’t mention square sausage.. I never normally eat it but weirdly lockdown makes me crave it 😂

Please don't ever work with our young people.

Some of our industries - computer gaming, renewable energy, whisky production, oil and gas, aerospace, finance, food, water, tourism, forestry.

Shock You are joking, right?
StarryEyeSurprise · 02/02/2021 23:01

I'm trying to figure out how the FM can be misogynistic. Confused

WouldBeGood · 02/02/2021 23:03

@StarryEyeSurprise errr.... do you follow the news? Joanna Cherry, the Hate Crimes Bill, the Forensic Services Amendment, the weird video rant?

Californiabakes · 02/02/2021 23:15

OP please don’t listen to a lot of the utter nonsense on this thread. Scottish mumsnetters aren’t allowed to post anything positive about Scotland or Scottish independence. If you want to move here you will be welcomed and its actually a fantastic place to live.

It's a pity then that none of the components for wind turbines are made in Scotland. Most are imported from Germany.

Then there's the BiFab debacle.

Timeandtune · 02/02/2021 23:22

Surely a better question would be “If there is a vote in favour of independence what will the criteria be for moving to England?”

WouldBeGood · 02/02/2021 23:28

And you won’t be able to move to and fro to live if Scotland is in the EU. Just things to consider.

Babdoc · 03/02/2021 09:23

WouldBeGood, don’t worry - Scotland fails the admission criteria for EU membership!
First, our deficit was 3x the allowed maximum for new members even before covid, and is worse now.
Secondly, new members have to demonstrate at least 3 years of financial stability on their own currency - which Scotland does not possess.
The SNP plan to use the UK pound without permission, so with no control over exchange or interest rates. They would have to spend millions to set up their own new currency Royal Mint, central bank and currency reserves, change every vending machine in Scotland to take the new coins, and then in the unlikely event the EU accepted them 3 years later, spend millions again to change to the Euro - compulsory for new members.
Why any sane person would choose this by voting for “independence” as a vassal state of Brussels is beyond me.

annabelindajane · 03/02/2021 09:24

It’s the “ fiscally “ illiterate SNP . If it wasn’t so frightening it would be funny 😄

annabelindajane · 03/02/2021 10:17

Of course we have businesses and would get by and end up after about 70 years like Eire as opposed to Norway Denmark and Sweden which the SNP fondly imagine we will follow . The free prescriptions , education and old age care would but for the poorest just be a happy memory . There would be a huge brain drain initially too . Out of interest any doubters could look at Eires chequered financial history .

I’d like to be in Europe, tbh.

But I’m a fewer borders, not more, person

WouldBeGood · 03/02/2021 10:23

I’m also worried about pensions, and other financial services.

slitheringsnakes · 03/02/2021 10:40

Scotland would be a MEMBER state of the European UNION, not a "vassal state".
Being in the EU is totally different from being in the UK, allowing far more independent decision-making. And the EU is well known for being supportive of small countries. Countries like Ireland and Estonia have done very well within the EU.
I'm not advocating independence, but it's perfectly reasonable to be in favour of both independence and EU membership.

WouldBeGood · 03/02/2021 10:42

@slitheringsnakes yes, I’d like to be in the EU. But would create massive problems with the English border.

slitheringsnakes · 03/02/2021 10:43

California - if Scotland is a fantastic place to live, why do you want to change the status quo? Is it because of Brexit, or because of nationalism?
If you're pretty happy with how things are, then don't change them. People are finding that out the hard way with Brexit.

WouldBeGood · 03/02/2021 10:46

I see Norway has a de facto two tier parliament

CountessFrog · 03/02/2021 10:52

Gosh I wish scotland would just leave.

A lot of English people don’t give a monkeys what they do. I find any coverage of the issue really tiring. NS seems a good, honest, straightforward woman - but she comes across as bitter and determined to prove a point.

We get it. Scotland is big and mighty, better than England, we’re off!

Ok, go then. It’s fine.
