@ikswobel This thread is a lovely place where we support and chat. There are plenty of fights in AIBU and loads of genuinely annoying posters to take issue with. Can I suggest you slide on over there.

Can I drink gin in the garden? Asking for a friend......

titsbumfannythelot · 13/01/2021 18:50

I hereby give your friend permission to drink goblets and goblets of gin in your garden cis

ssd · 13/01/2021 18:54
@RaspberryCoulis please don't put your cleaner in this awkward and illegal position. She needs to wear a mask. She also probably needs her job more than you can imagine. Reading this thread has totally sickened me with Scotsnet.
Will you listen to yourselves moaning about cleaners.
Check your privilege and maybe do some hoovering, it won't kill you.
Same here FFS

Cismyfatarse · 13/01/2021 18:59

@titsbumfannythelot I might join her while my cleaning team Hoover my shoe cupboard and dispose of my empty gin bottles.

ikswobel · 13/01/2021 19:05

Support and chat is verging into an echo chamber for some very unpleasant views @Cismyfatarse and @RaspberryCoulis among others is quite keen that we don't wear masks or believe in Covid. There are some very loud voices in here who don't represent everyone who posts.
I do object to insisting your cleaner comes to work at all when we are in a lockdown. It's not essential but to say take your mask off... what position does that put her in? It's illegal but she can hardly upset her employer. Cleaning is a low paid job and unless you use an agency it's often cash in hand.
A cleaner doesn't always have a choice to go on furlough.
It's not a matter for AIBU - just some posters on here do need to be called out and should check their privilege.

WouldBeGood · 13/01/2021 19:12

No one on this thread doesn’t believe in Covid. We’re all pretty obedient I think, but we’re allowed views and some light heated chat. Which, frankly, helps to keep me going.

There’s also a huge amount of concern in this thread for those adversely affected by Covid and lockdown. You might have seen my post about the poorest people bring disproportionately affected, for example.

polarisation · 13/01/2021 19:12

I follow an at-home baker on Facebook, who said that because she's definitely not allowed to work, her public liability insurance would be invalid if she kept working. Not sure if that's completely legit but maybe something to think about with people who are still happy to work if the govt has told them not to - I'd probably want to give them the work too, but I guess they might not be insured then Confused

WouldBeGood · 13/01/2021 19:13

My view on gin in hot tubs and gardens is that it’s ok as long as it’s not public gardens, in case you’re tempted to lick passers by

titsbumfannythelot · 13/01/2021 19:14

A solid use of your time cis, I approve.

I must be missing something but there were four posts or something talking about cleaners. Nobody put anyone else in a position, the cleaner said she was happy to come. What privilege is there to check?

ikswobel · 13/01/2021 19:18

@titsbumfannythelot everyone who's happy to have cleaners in for a start is ridiculously privileged- unless you have a disability a cleaner really isn't essential.

Mainly @RaspberryCoulis who texted her cleaner back to say she was to come in but don't be so daft as to wear a mask Angry

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/01/2021 19:19

Also thinking I've missed something as I've not seen anyone who doesn't believe in covid.

But bloody hell "check your privilege" is such an infuriatingly pompous 2019-esque phrase that needs to fuck off along with covid. Which, for clarity, I believe in. Although belief is the wrong word as it's a fact not the tooth fairy

Dinnafashyersel · 13/01/2021 19:22

Why on earth would a cleaner working in a different room from the home occupier need to wear a mask? I do wonder how some people's heads function.

Personal carers doing thrice daily visits to the elderly are an entirely different level of risk but since it is very difficult to mitigate I guess there is A LOT of displaced righteous indignation going on.

Was howling earlier at the SG Awards. I want one because I have a "live in" cleaner otherwise known as student DD2. Star She is just like Cinderella - never allowed to any Ball whether her chores are done or not. She didn't even have a drink to celebrate her 18th. Parents are no substitute for friends.

WouldBeGood · 13/01/2021 19:22

@ikswobel you might want to check your privilege if you’re in the happy position of continuing to be paid

anon444877 · 13/01/2021 19:23

And telling people they don't need cleaners and that having one is over privileged and unnecessary isn't helping cleaners. But no, you're right, we're the judgmental ones, mmm-hhhmmm.

I've broken no covid rules, i don't even know what a 'covid-denier' is meant to believe.

titsbumfannythelot · 13/01/2021 19:25

Whether someone has a cleaner or not isn't your concern @ikswobel, you know hee haw about @RaspberryCoulis and her set up at home.

WouldBeGood · 13/01/2021 19:27

I need my cleaner as it plays havoc with my nails if I do it myself.

Cismyfatarse · 13/01/2021 19:28

Work was tough today. I am camping in a tiny corner of a room wrapped in a heated electric blanket as the whole house has every door and window open for the builders. Fortunately, I had a "meeting" with another teacher - traditionally done monthly over cake but done today while I watched her eat cake on my screen and I cursed giving my MiL all our remaining Christmas stash.

Pupils, even the most motivated, find working from home tough. Often they need constant keeping on task and don't always manage their own time well so tasks take far longer than they should. This makes giving feedback tough as you can't discuss the answers with a class where many of them have not done the work.

We are campaigning for a longer lunch break. We shortened it when in school because the pupils couldn't really gather except in classrooms. But now we want longer so pupils can eat and get outside as well.

We shall see. I would love time to walk and eat - especially while daylight is so lacking.

I'm amazed grown women still have cleaners coming into their homes just now. And I dont care if its allowed , morally it's wrong. Unless you physically cant do your own cleaning, if you cant have your own mother into your home, why on earth would you have your cleaner?

If I had the money to have a cleaner I'd be telling them to stay safe at home and I'd do my own cleaning till its safer for her to come. And I'd be paying her in full.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/01/2021 19:30

"covid-denier"

Is there a thickness scale for covid-deniers, like tights? 10 denier covid denial is fragile, see through and easily torn. 100 denier on the other hand are pretty thick Grin

Cismyfatarse · 13/01/2021 19:31

I am no longer paying my cleaner but expecting twice the work. This is because we are at home all the time and the house is extra filthy.

He tried to extract some sort of bonus the other day but I told him to go back to sleep.

And why wasn't he wearing a mask?

OP posts:
Iwillneverbesatisfied · 13/01/2021 19:32

@ikswobel maybe you should check your own privilege as I'm doubtful your income has been affected unlike a cleaners. Not all of them are entitled to support or furlough. I highly doubt you've been following the rules 100% yourself. I wouldn't have a cleaner inside myself and I hate cleaning but I try not to judge those who are keeping their cleaners because you can't make assumptions about other people's circumstances. No doubt you are the same type of person who thinks everyone should wear a mask even those with invisible disabilities like me. If you hate Scotsnet so much, then go elsewhere.

Coquohvan · 13/01/2021 19:32

“ everyone who's happy to have cleaners in for a start is ridiculously privileged- unless you have a disability a cleaner really isn't essential.”
In your opinion.

Just read a thread where a mother has lost her 12wk baby. This nonsense is so petty, be kinder to fellow posters please. Haven’t we enough to deal with at this point in time!

ikswobel · 13/01/2021 19:34

I'm sad that it's no longer ok to have principles because that went out of fashion in 2019!

It's illegal to have cleaners in your home at the moment but if they were essential they would need to wear a mask.

www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/

I have been on here long enough to know that @RaspberryCoulis doesn't consider herself vulnerable to Covid.

Does everyone here with a cleaner use an agency? If you do they should be put on furlough and paid. Or maybe they are self employed or cash in hand - it would be nice to think that you are all still paying for them even though they can't work. If that's the case I'm happy to check my privilege for being paid- of which I am well aware

RaspberryCoulis · 13/01/2021 19:35

Gosh there are so many inaccuracies I don't know where to start.
 1. I hate masks - no secret. But I comply with the legal obligations because I don't want a fine.
 2. I do believe in Covid. Hmm
 3. I'm not insisting on anything. Cleaner wants to carry on working. I want her to to carry on working.
 4. If she wants to wear a mask she can. But I am not the mask police and don't care either way.
 5. I'm not her employer.

I couldn't give two hoots what people think about me having a cleaner. Yes it's a luxury, yes I could do it myself but I don't want to and can afford not to. Other people can do their own nails and choose to pay someone to do it, or walk their dog but prefer to pay someone to do it. Big deal. Our money. We spend it as we please.

Dinnafashyersel · 13/01/2021 19:36

Are grown Men allowed cleaners then ssd? I have several neighbours doing personal care for relatives rather than burden / risk community infection from social carers. If they have a cleaner come in to lighten the load and sort their home while they are out what business is it of anyone to judge and where is the risk?

I don't see how me not having my Mother in my home prevents someone else having their cleaner.
