@runningpink tinder is my recommendation.

I only did it very briefly, as my first date was with now DP, but even chatting was fun after years of being lonely. I approached it with the attitude that it would be a bit of fun, absolutely no expectations, which is the way to do it. I just figured I had nothing to lose and it worked out very well. I’m ancient too, so it was a long time since I’d dated

Sturmundcalm · 09/01/2021 14:55

no direct experience of OLD but I think your age guides to an extent? two of my friends (early-mid 40s) did tinder for a while but i think they both met their OHs on plenty of fish. there is an "issue" with POF but can't now remember what it was - sorry!

have to say that IMO tinder in particular does turn into a bit like online shopping with the swiping but it is what it is... good luck!

Lockdownbear · 09/01/2021 14:59

Shhhhh....I met DH on Match. Blush

I was inspired by a friend of a friend met his wife OLD I'm not sure which site. DH was inspired by a friend who met his DW via a newspaper's. My friend later split with DP and is now married via OLD.

Somehow it's not something we tell lots of people.

Groovee · 09/01/2021 15:01

Hillend is Midlothian.

Edinburgh police have requested people don't go to a protest March on Monday. The Pentland Hill rangers have put out a plea not to go up the Pentland as the ice is bad.

Had a very lazy day. Dd is making dinner. Have done my exercise on YouTube. That definitely helps me.

rookiemere · 09/01/2021 15:03

I met DH through Dating Direct - no idea if it exists any more.

I think you need pretty good self esteem and resilience to cope with online dating. I'd pretty much reached the feck it stage by the time I met DH and was unwilling to be involved in any game playing or being mucked around. Readers I mostly married him because at the end of our first date, not only did he ask me out then and there, but then got his Nokia as this happened quite a long time ago phone out to arrange our next date.

Lockdownbear · 09/01/2021 15:04

Yip it helps to approach it as a bit of fun, if you meet the right person great and hopefully have a few laughs along the way. Met a couple of interesting people before DH but didn't quiet click.

The whole lockdown business doesn't help but my recommendation is to meet video call, I'd maybe be tempted to get a PAYG sim so you can use an old phone to What's App without giving out your main number.
Some phones will take two sims so you might not even need an old phone.

rookiemere · 09/01/2021 15:06

Fair enough @Groovee it is pretty icy out there and nobody wants any more helicopter rescues. DH was quite excited by the conditions, he has bought new crampons and was eager for an opportunity to test their metal as it were, but I suppose not everyone will be as well prepared.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/01/2021 15:11

No experience of OLD but saying go for it. Friend has been chatting with a guy on there during lock down and it may go nowhere when they met up properly but she is enjoying a bit of a distraction and chatting to someone new.

@wbreezer, comb arrived and initial thoughts are that it seems okay. Cat liking it being stroked down her tummy and her head etc. not so keen with it down her back and tail and back legs (i.e. the problem areas) but it still pull a fair amount of underfluff out and she tolerated it as i was stroking under her chin with the other hand. I think it will be useful if i can give her a go over with it daily. Getting her to turn to the other side for completeness wasn't very successful so one side is done better than the other. On balance I'm hopeful to at least try to prevent build up but i am sick of telling everyone to stop stroking just her top half as they are just stroking more loose hair down to the bottom half and leaving it there.

Coquohvan · 09/01/2021 15:12

@Dinnafashyersel missed that re ongoing vaccination. Seems sensible topping up vax for at risks groups, would give them freedom to travel, socialise and get some semblance of life again going forward. Could possible be like our current NHS flu jab annual roll out.
@running go for it get your profile online, this past year most our lives changed so much so quickly, some have lost dear friends or family. It has reinforced us to continue doing fun things we usually do and to give new things a go. Let us know how it goes plz.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/01/2021 15:18

I can remember being on the Petlands when it was really windy and greetin because I thought I was going to get blown off - DH laughing and asking where i was getting blown off to as it was just a big round mound rather than a cliff edge.

Worst was on Arran where we had got dropped off by friends to walk through a valley and then over a ridge back to the hotel. Got 3 quarters up and it was verglass everywhere and I couldn't go up anymore, we ended up having to come back down (me on my bottom) and back through the valley to the road and then we were 8 miles from the hotel. No buses, no taxis, no car. Tried to phone friends from a call box but they didn't answer the room phone - said later they were sleeping (suspect they were shagging :o ) and we then had to try to march as quick as possible the 8 miles back to get back before dinner.

I've sort of given up joining DH now.

anon444877 · 09/01/2021 15:50

friend met her DH on match running - I've got two other friends who've found partners on OLD too, but there are a lot of frogs I hear.

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 09/01/2021 15:58

Most of my friends met their now partners online dating. Go for it!

Lockdownbear · 09/01/2021 16:13

BbC headlines.
Lizzy & Phil have had the vaccine. Makes sense given their ages.

Donald's been permanently suspended from Twitter.
How can you be permanently suspended? I always thought suspended was temporary???

WouldBeGood · 09/01/2021 16:22

@Lockdownbear yes, and will hopefully reassure worried old people

RaspberryCoulis · 09/01/2021 16:22

This is good news about Liz and Phil having the vaccine. I saw an article a while ago about how important it was that Queenie let it be known that she'd had Anne and Charles vaccinated against polio in the 50s. It was a hugely controversial vaccine at the time and it was thought that the Queen had swayed public opinion.

On the other hand, at the height of the panic over MMR in the late 90s/early 2000s, Tony and Cherie Blair refused to confirm/deny that their youngest child had had the jab. Obviously they are entitled to privacy over medical issues but at the time it was very much taken that the reason they were not coming out and saying "yes he's had it" was because the vaccine was not to be trusted and they had opted against it. It did a LOT of damage.

Lockdownbear · 09/01/2021 16:27

I didn't know that about the polio vaccine, but it does make sense that they show confidence in the vaccines.

Perihelion · 09/01/2021 16:51

Don't think OLD had been invented when I last dated/bagged off with someone. Thought DH was sophisticated when I met him, because he had a pagerGrin

MissEliza · 09/01/2021 16:57

Imagine the polio vaccination being controversial.

Lockdownbear · 09/01/2021 17:23

A pager 😂 confined to the history museum along with audio cassettes.

Its almost unthinkable that polio vaccine was controversial.

runningpink · 09/01/2021 17:34

Thanks all for your thoughts/advice/promising stories of OLD.

I will give it a bit more thought and make a decision. Shall let you know what I decide.

titsbumfannythelot · 09/01/2021 17:39

I've heard of some friends of friends having success with bumble @runningpink

Disposableplates · 09/01/2021 18:15

@runningpink I have use both tinder and bumble. Prefer bumble, but it does tend to be the same guys on each!

Wbeezer · 09/01/2021 19:29

Thanks @WaxOnFeckOff cat is a dedicated hunter and spends a lot of time in the undergrowth a lot of her matts start as twiggs and burrs... She is rather magnificent though if a bit scruffy

Oh she is gorgeous and longer haired than waxcat.

I kept the comb by my side when on the sofa earlier and gave her a we go with it when she was on my knee but stopped when she started to look annoyed - she then proceeded to knock it off the sofa, then jumped down and hit it under the sofa so I guess she has made her opinion clear!

Wbeezer · 09/01/2021 19:46

My brother met his wife through the now defunct Guardian soulmates page which seems a bit old fashioned now.
