Ground up copies of the beano?

Perihelion · 04/01/2021 09:58

Right now, Covid isn't looking seasonal in South America, South Africa, Indonesia etc.
Our increase in infection is probably driven by Christmas mixing and household transmission, as we're only 10 day since Christmas, 11 days from hospitality shut and 13 days from schools shutting.

mondaywine · 04/01/2021 10:04

The continuing rise fascinates me. We live in a very large village and there’s literally no one out and about and it’s been like this all through the holiday. Barely anyone left our wee estate over Xmas itself and ours was one of the very few houses who had a visible visitor on Xmas day. However children in my class have spoken non stop all December about indoor play dates and sleepovers which have been happening. I can’t really see where it’s all coming from.

Bytheloch · 04/01/2021 10:07

I agree @WouldBeGood

I know Jason Leitch gives the virus a personality, as though it likes roast potato spoons, but I just see that as alarmist nonsense- the reality is, it’s a virus doing its thing🤷‍♀️ Even following all the rules, once it’s in your community it will spread.
It’s like we’ve now all forgotten the many bugs and viruses we normally deal with, if we’re fortunate to have good health and the resilience to bounce back, on our side.
The focus needs to switch to delivering the vaccine to those most in need, whilst allowing the rest of us to maintain good mental health. Any more restrictions will probably tip those of us who’ve remained strong so farSad into territory that there’s no vaccine for.

Me too @mondaywine , I was a bit suspicious about the spready new strain that came handily close to Christmas, but it's the only way really to explain the doubling of numbers. Unless people have not bothered getting tested before, but now they are off work they think they might as well and hey voila - numbers rise.

I do think shops have to restrict shoppers to one person only - unless help is needed. The general behaviour of those in M&S was off day trippers out on a family excursion - of course the fact there is sod all else to do means that it is - and the behaviour would be obnoxious enough during normal times , never mind when we're meant to be speedy and avoid contact with others. I do feel for the staff caught in the throng of folk, but certainly in M&S it seemed only to be you g strapping people on the aisles and the others at the checkouts where they are more protected.

I'd just like to point out that Buckfast is produced by an Abbey in Cornwall. I really wanted to visit it when down there, but was overruled by DH and DS.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/01/2021 10:18

I was only half listening so apologies for the scanty detail, but DH was talking about some polar expedition where the group hadn't seen anyone for months then one of them got the flu. Which I guess shows the resilience of viruses.

Continuous lock downs don't work on many levels when it's this endemic but it can sometimes look as if they have depending on when they've been put in. If numbers go down then people attribute that to the lock down, when they go up again it's because people are breaking the rules...

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 04/01/2021 10:19

Interestingly this literally just appeared on my Twitter feed (time stamp says 10am today). Does this mean that they are definitely sticking to opening on the 18th? I'm quite surprised tbh.

And me @mondaywine I just go on the basis that’s there’s no community cases at the moment. Our school went from Aug to Xmas with no cases, bar a cousin of a high school child who had to isolate off for a parent (not a local resident) case.

It’s a virus, if the strain is not present in your community then it can’t be spread if you’re following the rules or having sleepovers.

It’s like chicken pox- all fine until that day you see the sign up on the nursery door, you know to look out for symptoms in your child🤷‍♀️ Until that you’ve no idea if there’s any cases locally.

MamaTookMyEyebrows · 04/01/2021 10:23

Have they taken it back down? I can’t see that tweet

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 04/01/2021 10:25

Yeah, I think it must have been a cock up as getting the 'failed to load tweet' message now. Ah well.

Bytheloch · 04/01/2021 10:27

Probably a scheduled tweet added before the Christmas breakGrin I suspect a social media minion somewhere just got an urgent message to remove it.

blowinahoolie · 04/01/2021 10:27

YOuCannOtBeSer1Ous please let this be true 🤞

MamaTookMyEyebrows · 04/01/2021 10:31

Ha! That's one social media junior staff member who won't have a job tomorrow... poor bugger.

I'd just like to point out that Buckfast is produced by an Abbey in Cornwall.
Yes, I'd heard that! Bizarre. Apparently it tastes like some crazy caffeinated sugary version of communion wine, so became popular amongst Roman Catholic communities, which is why it's so popular in west Scotland and Ireland. The Abbey (well, it's distributor) now donates the money it would spend on advertising in Scotland to alcohol charities...

Sweetpotatoaddict · 04/01/2021 10:39

Saw that tweet and felt hopeful. I wonder if the recent spike in cases has anything to do with the reduced isolation period? It’s the only thing I can think of that has been relaxed recently, rather than tightened up on.

Had planned a nice walk for today as last day before dh heads back to work, been curtailed due to the blanket of black ice that currently is covering everything.

Dollybagwash · 04/01/2021 10:44

Christ almighty they can't even run their Twitter profile correctly what chance do we all have.

Dinnafashyersel · 04/01/2021 10:50

Just checking in. Hauding my wheesht as got nothing positive to say but just wanted to let you know I appreciate everyone else still being here.

I also looked at the paths this morning and thought black ice best stay indoors.

Bikingbear · 04/01/2021 10:51

Sweet potato I don't think the reduced isolation has anything to do with it, esp give it was estimated less than 10% were sticking to the full 14 days anyway.

blowinahoolie · 04/01/2021 10:52

sweetpotatoaddict same, we are stuck in as it too dangerous to go walking. Like a caged animal instead 🙄

Good point about the isolation period. I don't think that would have caused a doubling, though, given the huge majority of cases are symptomatic within a week/ 10 days. I could believe that potentially causing a smaller rise though. So that might be increased again.

Same about the ice here. It's a lovely day, but so treacherous. Our sainsburys delivery man has got stuck on some ice somewhere so has just called us to say he'll be late. Hope he's OK, but he's got my tonic water in his van, so this could get critical if he's not here soonish.

@MamaTookMyEyebrows

God i would love it if it was called the Dundee Vaccine Grin
Me too 😁

Morning all. I’ve never been so glad that I don’t have school age children now, all this uncertainty isn’t good on any level.

I’m so glad I got away to the sun last month, as happened last year it’s really boosted me mentally, I don’t have the flat feeling I’ve always had in years gone by. My overriding feeling is “when the feck are you getting back to work?” directed towards dh.😂

I know I’m doing a lot better mentally as my fridge freezer went kaput on Hogmanay and I really didn’t get upset about it. I didn’t even get upset that very few places have any stock, never mind what I actually want, I’ve spent £200 on a wee one that’ll do in the meantime and I’ll just sell it on Gumtree when I get the one I want.

I was very glad of the quiet new year this year, and not having to find an excuse to not be sociable-it really isn’t my favourite time of year since my mum died, and with my dad going in May I just get too emotional.

Fed up of this being confined to the local authority area though (and police ARE issuing fines) I need to get out for a bit to clear my head and across the water to St Andrew’s is where I would normally go, just to sit in the car and people watch, but not allowed, even though I wouldn’t even be out of the car🙄 ho hum

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 04/01/2021 10:56

Iv had one neighbour (a couple) who have had their daughter/husband/kids around the last three days for a few hours at a time.

That's my neighbour - we must live in the same street.
Folk across the road are little better.
We give them a body swerve if we see them out and about.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 04/01/2021 10:57

Judge ARE the police issuing fines? How do you know?

WouldBeGood · 04/01/2021 11:02

Stuck in by ice here too
