Assuming it all goes ahead what are the likely impacts on Scotland?

@ssd yes but where do you think the cushion of money for Scotland is currently coming from ? The EU?

Soooh · 01/01/2021 20:43

I love Scotland. I have Scottish ancestry. I am married to a Dutchman and my ex is an Italian. I think we had better be careful thinking that the EU will bankroll Scotland more than London already is.

Outsidemum1 · 01/01/2021 20:46

So.. you don't live in Scotland? And think that Londoners are generously gifting money to Scotland?

ikswobel · 01/01/2021 20:56

Woah @Soooh do you really think London is bankrolling us? There are only 6 million Scots and we do still have a substantial amount of natural resources including oil, which is still going to be necessary in future. Please do not quote the GERs figures.
I do respect people who consider themselves British and don't want to separate the UK but too wee, too poor, too stupid arguments just won't wash.

Soooh · 01/01/2021 20:58

@Outsidemum1 I have Scottish ancestry and yes live in Scotland and yes know that london bamkrolls us

Outsidemum1 · 01/01/2021 21:02

Please, humour me and explain some more .. how does London (the people living there? Or you mean the UK Government?) 'bankroll' Scotland?

Soooh · 01/01/2021 21:02

@Outsidemum1 tax receipts

Nyx · 01/01/2021 21:03

You are aware that Scotland has taxpayers?

Soooh · 01/01/2021 21:04

@Nyx do you think I am stupid. Of course. But the tax receipts need to be bigger than the outgoings.

Soooh · 01/01/2021 21:06

Look it’s fine. Go to the EU to bankroll Scotland. All I am saying is don’t expect Germany, France and the Netherlands to be particularly happy about that. And this is from somebody Scottish with direct access to European media .

Arkadia · 01/01/2021 21:08

@Bytheloch, I was about to say in jest that NS must have written that article. I googled it and found out that NS had indeed written the article that @Outsidemum1 had posted. Grin
www.politico.eu/article/uk-brexit-changed-game-on-scottish-independence/
Next I think we ought to publish an article by the Pope telling us why we should be going to church.

HeadNorth · 01/01/2021 21:10
@HeadNorth you do know Mike Russel hasn't been in charge of education now for quite some time...
Of course, but the damage he did has not gone away and has not been reversed. These were the lifelines out of poverty for many children and the closure of so many courses is a disgrace to this day.

Outsidemum1 · 01/01/2021 21:12

You realise the city of London has an abundance of non doms ( non domiciled- non tax payers) and the English Government refuse to subsidise the poorest having an extra bedroom nevermind a whole country on?
In fact, since you bring it up, Scotland has been balancing the books of England for 30 years (that's an Alistair Darling quote- look it up). David Cameron said similar on the Andrew Marr show (post 2014 I'm sure ;) ).

On the subject of EU funding , the more remote areas- Highlands and Islands have lots of plaques signifying projects have been done with EU help.

I'm also very skeptical that you live in Scotland- most wouldn't say they have Scottish ancestry on an Internet forum if they infact live there themselves.

Stop misquoting me. Read my post again. I said it was a personal post.

Jodri · 01/01/2021 21:25

@ikswobel that’s interesting your thinking that farmers in Scotland are now embracing independence. In my experience it’s very much split with slightly more still favouring remaining with the U.K.
The Scottish Farmer did give very balanced and equal time to viewpoints throughout brexit.

The media gave the EU such a bad rep and publicity throughout my youth when I regarded myself as European (my grandmother is from a European country and met my grandfather when he did his national service). I’m sure I was the only person who watched and enjoyed europa on bbc2 then too.

I was surprised at the outpouring of grief from remainers and my vocal SNP friends who had never given EU more than a holiday destination thought, and still only fret about this.

I worry that an independent Scotland within EU would be a tiny voice with less say than what we have now and we would be pushed around like Greece. Before Greece’s crash I remember listening to radio 4 ‘from our own correspondent’ and a Greek doctor was talking about how he was the only consultant paying his full and fair share tax in his hospital, his colleagues said he was stupid to do this Hmm.

Coming out of the EU has meant we can stop live exports for slaughter which I think is a huge problem for animal welfare: England and Wales are moving forward with this ban and in Scotland SNP government said they would oppose this a few years back, but are putting it out to consultation (I’m so fed up of these). This does mean that the governments need to properly fund local abattoirs, which are unfortunately all closing down.
Like local health care I think this is vital for communities throughout Scotland.

Tampon tax is abolished too with us coming out of EU. I think this a good universal action for all women, I know we have free sanitary products in Scotland but honestly I would probably only use these in an emergency as I’ve seen too many free tampons in the basket provided being played with. A lot of people don’t value free. This levelling helps to remove stigma and a two tier system.

Outsidemum1 · 01/01/2021 21:27

Sooh who's bankrolling Finland? Or any other of the EU countries with a smaller GDP than Scotland?

Effects of Brexit deal on Scotland
Nc135 · 01/01/2021 21:35

@Outsidemum1 the EU is a business that has just lost an enormous contributor. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you accept yet another poor contributor. I am looking at this thorough a financial and not emotional lens.

Nc135 · 01/01/2021 21:36

Look I hope they do. But I am not as confident as many of you are that this will happen. Critical thinking.

Jodri · 01/01/2021 21:37

I thought NS said if you live in Scotland now and say you are Scottish no matter where you were born or how long you’ve been here, then you are Scottish.

@Soooh just ignore the other posters, your points are valid and interesting and I welcome them in a discussion.

They are being prejudice and intolerant just because someone has a different viewpoint to them.

Outsidemum1 · 01/01/2021 21:40

Jodri there are no live exports for slaughter from Scotland to the continent.

Also the tampon tax bill was being put through the EU in 2016 but due to Brexit, it was stopped so if it hadn't been for us leaving, it would have been abolished throughout the EU which is surely better ( read here- one of the founders of the campaign's annoyance it has been used by the Gov as a pro Brexit argument).

Of course anyone living in Scotland is Scottish. Would you then say you have Scottish Ancestry as an introduction to why you are interested in Scottish politics? No, you would say you are Scottish not that you have Scottish ancestory. No one's being prejudice here thank you very much.
Soooh · 01/01/2021 21:44

@Jodri thanks. I am completely for Scotland. I have an EU perspective as am married to Dutchman with an ex who is Italian. I am genuinely trying to understand this from both sides and give some critical thinking.

Soooh · 01/01/2021 21:46

@Outsidemum1 I find it extraordinary that this whole thread has been sabotaged by irrelevance. I saw it earlier and tried to bypass it. We Scots are going to kill ourselves with verbal pedantry.

Outsidemum1 · 01/01/2021 21:51

Sophie you were the one that came out with the London / bank rolling comment ( which at first I ignored).

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 01/01/2021 21:55

So scotland wants independence but then want to re join eu ?
That I never get as surely its not independence , plus there is no hope of them joining anytime soon , they would need to adopt the euro among many other things
Maybe they should see how it pans out for a bit before talking of jumping ship
maybe if they really want independence nicola needs to get the rest if the uk to vote as well
