Assuming it all goes ahead what are the likely impacts on Scotland?

Arkadia, maybe it's a token system? Three comments and you have enough for a kazoo, 20 and its a wee flag for your car, 50 a baseball cap and so on...

kurtrussellsbeard · 01/01/2021 11:59

@Arkadia didn't realise I couldn't mention independence. Seems pretty relevant if you ask me?

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/01/2021 12:01

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha........ Ha....

And you are who exactly?

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/01/2021 12:02

And you made it about you, I didn't.

caringcarer · 01/01/2021 12:03

Shops have said no need for price rises because we got a no tariff deal. A few small exporters who only export to EU will need to learn to do export paperwork but it takes about 3 mins to fill in the form. There is online help. Scottish fishing will not regain their quotas as quickly as they had hoped but will get back a bit more year on year over next 5 1/2 years same as rest of UK. Barnett formula still in place. It would have been very different if we had left with a no deal.

Soooh · 01/01/2021 12:04

What I don’t get about the fish thing for Scotland - is surely we are getting more quotas with Brexit - and if Scotland rejoins the EU they will lose that gain. Genuinely don’t understand the argument here.

kurtrussellsbeard · 01/01/2021 12:04

Bizarre.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/01/2021 12:06

Ah new profile - hmm.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 01/01/2021 12:09

Brexit may or may not have been a good idea, but it was what the UK voted for, we have now left the EU, and there is a trade deal in place. As with everything, there will be winners and losers, but that is how it is. I see no point in continuing to discuss whether or not Brexit is a good idea as if there is any chance to reverse the decision, because there isn't. It's done. Personally, I think what Scotland and the UK desperately needs is a period of political stability where we deal with COVID and rebuild society once infections are brought under control. Once we are all in a stronger position, perhaps then would be the time to discuss issues around Scottish independence, including options for joining the EU, whether we meet the entry criteria, what terms would be available, and whether these are preferable to being in the UK single market. Basically an honest discussion about the realities without the emotional rhetoric.

Can we just recap here:

I posted my opinion. You swore at me and told me to grow up. You said people should make the best of it (but not me that was me just making it all about me). You then accused me of being a 'nicbot'

🤷🏻‍♀️wtaf

I've name changed which, given this is anonymous forum, shouldn't make one blind bit of difference to you.

This is genuinely bizarre.

Viewfromtheisland · 01/01/2021 12:18

Who knows? It is not what I wanted but it has happened now and it has got to be better than a no deal outcome. The sun came up this morning so that’s always a good start.

Anyone understand the fish thing I asked about above?

kurtrussellsbeard · 01/01/2021 12:23

I've been on here for about ten years. I change my name regularly. I have literally posted my own opinion about brexit. A double layer of anonymity? have I stumbled onto some top secret thread here with secret rules that only I'm not privy to?

Didn't realise I had to have a visible posting history to participate in this thread or indeed that you were some kind of poster police @Arkadia?

Viewfromtheisland · 01/01/2021 12:24

@Soooh agreed , would like to understand this too, surely if an independent Scotland rejoined the EU (assuming that was possible) then the fishing industry would lose out?

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 01/01/2021 12:26

If you're suspicious about a post, report it.

Otherwise leave people alone and let's stick to the actual topic? I NC pretty often since I discovered my best mate is a user too, there's nothing suspicious about it.

kurtrussellsbeard · 01/01/2021 12:29

I've actually reported both the posts insinuating that I'm something other than a normal poster.

This is what puts me off posting in Scotsnet. Swore at in response to my first post and a few posts later I'm some sort of super troll with a secret identity 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

Soooh · 01/01/2021 12:30

@Viewfromtheisland I watched a bit of the debate in Parliament and Boris said that the fishing quotas are going UP after Brexit. Not as high as wanted - but clearly we had to compromise during the negotiations. Then the SNP MP stood up and was challenging it saying the Scottish fishermen were losing out. Firstly are Scottish fishermen getting a different fish quota to English, Welsh and Northern Irish fishermen? Secondly, surely indeed the Scottish fishermen would LOSE this additional quota if they were to rejoin the EU. Don’t get it.

PapsofJura · 01/01/2021 12:32

So this post is really about independence, using Brexit as a smokescreen.

As an aside, for many years the SNP were known as the tartan tories.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/01/2021 12:32

I think when someone comments to me about "always" doing something, I think it's legitimate for me to check someone's posting history to see where we have engaged before. We have had an issue quite recently where someone claimed to be Arkadia after being inflammatory so I guess they also have an interest in checking when someone has a similar posting style.

giggly · 01/01/2021 12:33

@kurtrussellsbeard and this is why I rarely post due to the passive aggressiveness of the likes of those two at it again.ffs

Arkadia · 01/01/2021 12:34

@kurtrussellsbeard according to my search, you name changed earlier today when posting on an unrelated thread.

Anyway, my guess is that the SNP right now are running "focus groups" like this one left, right and centre to gauge whether there is any point in pursuing the Brexit issue.
My other guess is that they will find that people are tired and want to move on (I know I do), and the matter will quietly and rapidly disappear from the front pages (like the £500 debacle).

anon444877 · 01/01/2021 12:35

Me either @Soooh I didn't vote for brexit but agree with what @Y0uCann0tBeSer10us says, and my understanding was Scottish fish Indy did want free of CAP, and this delivers a pathway to that and uk subsidies meanwhile.

If it's just not as good as they hoped for, that's a shame but i can't see how scot gov is offering a better deal.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 01/01/2021 12:35

I have my moments here too (the Wee Nic type stuff is fairly prevailing tbh) but I figure I've as much right to post as anyone else.

Also - I just saw this front cover in a Guardian article. We should not join in with the narrative that tries to claim Brexit is about better trade or economic gains. It's about nationalism, English exceptionalism, a harking back to the age of an Empire which no longer exists.
