I've name changed for this.
Had a wee look over on that page tonight as I have a ( possible ex) friend who's really active there and shares things all the time.
There is a post on tonight where people are actively threatening to take on the police as they have " weapons to match them ". I get we are all scunnered but I'm really worried by it. It has nothing to do with keeping schools open or protecting children!

We received info, I think it was from the EIS that stated no online lessons. I am getting on in years and not very tech savvy so the thought of doing this would give me the fear and probably drive me to early retirement

I am providing online work for my class that is covering exactly what we'd be doing in class. I did the same last time and the parents were happy with that, so hopefully I haven't any UfT parents in my class this time! Grin

rookiemere · 10/01/2021 09:12

I'm not sure that wanting some live lessons marks one as an UFT parent, unless we are using UFT as shorthand for any DP who voices any concerns whatsoever about teaching provision provided.

Thankfully DSs school are providing a mixture of live teaching and online provision this time and thus far - it's only been 2 days - it seems to be working really well.

If Scottish teaching union has said no live lessons, I think that's fairly unacceptable tbh. My DS is certainly a lot more engaged with live input from his teachers. If it's a question of mastering new technology, well school management team should be helping with that. Nobody's job from home is as it was in their place of work - I certainly have a lot more thoughts about early retirement than I did when in the office - but surely we have to try to adapt to our clients ( in this case pupils) needs, even if it requires some personal adaptation ?

@RaraRachael

Have you a link to that Grovvee?
Just go to Twitter and put usforthem exposed. I can't link as it keeps taking me to the app.
Groovee · 10/01/2021 09:23

Quite a few of my friends with children struggle in lessons and have PSA's to support them. A live lesson isn't allowed to be recorded apparently under GPDR. Yet a recorded lesson means they can stop the lesson and go back etc.

I know our school has teams for P3-7 and all these classes have been taught how to use it. We've given WiFi dongles to families without and devices to those who need them. But there will be families who don't come forward and struggle with mums old iPhone.

rookiemere · 10/01/2021 09:35

@Groovee it's a shame that the GDPR element can't be investigated and a solution found to allow live lessons to be recorded.

That would mean that those pupils who benefit from live interaction could watch the live lesson, and those who need to watch at a different time and rewatch certain elements could also do so.

Who says that it can't be done from a GDPR perspective? if it's down to seeing teacher or pupils faces then the screen can only show the lesson, if it's down to pupils asking questions then these can be input on screen, rather than asked out loud.

Groovee · 10/01/2021 10:03

@rookiemere have seen in on a few things. But not looked into it.

Live lessons don't really work in nursery when things would need to be directed where as we take things from the play observed and extend from there.

Groovee · 10/01/2021 10:05

But I wouldn't want to do a live lesson incase it ends up scrutinised and shared on the UfT fb group. I get why staff are really reluctant with a group like that.

DollyMixtureLulus · 10/01/2021 10:23

I have 5 groups in my class and they all need a different input for working from home, to make life as easy as possible for parents.

People calling for live lessons are assuming that the whole class have one device each, a quiet space, and are all working at the same level.

I am also very uneasy about the possibility of being recorded and made into stupid Tiktoks etc. Adults in the workplace (I can only hope) really don’t have that concern.

rookiemere · 10/01/2021 10:25

I can totally see why live lessons wouldn't work for nurseries but they've been fantastic for engaging my S3 DS.

I'm so worried that he'll fall behind on core learning needed for Nat5s and wfh myself I don't have a lot of time or knowledge to support him. There's been such a difference this time compared to last time and that's down to school management organisation and the live teaching.

I don't think worries about what a marginal fringe group will say about your teaching is a good enough reason not to do it, although I appreciate that unjustified criticism is always upsetting.

RaraRachael · 10/01/2021 11:50

That would be my main fear too. One of them was saying how marvellous her child's teacher was as they're going to be doing x amount of live lessons, zoom calls with the kids etc etc. The teacher is new, young and enthusiastic we'll see how long that lasts and if they're still teaching in 5 years' time "If that teacher can do it, then all teachers can" {hmm} Another one was demanding that each child had at least a 45 minute live lesson each day, until a member (presumably a genuine teacher) pointed out that in the classroom the teacher would never be talking for that length of time. Just shows how little they know about how teaching works.
icanboogieboogiewoogie · 10/01/2021 20:42

And presumably said teacher doesn't have her own children to control homeschool while teaching a whole day's worth of live lessons.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/01/2021 21:21

it says this on the scot gov guidance for school place attendance for key workers:

• Only key workers who are physically attending their workplace or who cannot fulfil their critical functions when they are working remotely from home may qualify for places.

Surely this then applies to Drs and teachers and those providing a "live" service?

Callisto1 · 10/01/2021 22:25

I think the younger the child the harder it is to do remote learning. A video is really helpful since they can see their teacher and the parent doesn't need to do a poor job at explaining a PowerPoint. All the while wrangling a toddler, trying to work or both 😱.

RaraRachael · 10/01/2021 22:52

Some of them howling tonight that there's no work up for their child to do.....don't they realise that school starts at 9am on Monday?Hmm
A certain poster saying that their child has finished all their work already!!

mondaywine · 10/01/2021 23:04

We put our outlines and resources up on a Sunday as that’s what some parents requested last time. Primary school and they said it helped them plan the week ahead. I get that and it’s a fair point. The one who’s bumping her gums about the week’s work being completed already is a loon.

Callisto1 · 10/01/2021 23:24

It is really helpful to get the teaching materials for the week ahead with some time to prepare. I don't know all teacher jargon! So I have to Google. Our printer is ancient and plays up so I print the night before. I guess with older children you have less chaos so maybe don't need stuff to be all ready.

Groovee · 11/01/2021 17:02

Someone wants a questionnaire for nursery 🤷🏻‍♀️

WeAllHaveWings · 11/01/2021 18:09

Thanks to all who donated to the fundraiser.

Only 78 of their 12.9k following putting their money in to help the cause🤣🤣🤣

Still convinced there is a very active but tiny minority in the group and the rest are there for entertainment only.

It's like driving past a car crash - you try your best not to look but can't help it and then feel bad afterwards. 🤣

Absolutely this. My OH had even started looking at it as he's enjoyed the entertainment of me reading out the latest crazy musings Grin. I see the latest is to send an invoice for £15 per hour to cover them for teaching their kids at home.
Outsidemum1 · 11/01/2021 18:44

Didn't actually meant the laughing emoji there!

Outsidemum1 · 11/01/2021 18:46

Yes! There's always a nugget which makes you go WTAF. 😂

Groovee · 11/01/2021 19:17

The thought on the £15 per hour invoice made me laugh. They have no idea.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 11/01/2021 19:58

And they don't have time to help their children with schoolwork but they have time to produce pointless, fake invoices.

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 11/01/2021 23:27

Rararachael - we should let them know we get paid a lot more than £15 per hour for teaching their weans!
