N Ireland had really low levels of exposure in Spring. Suspect politicians there are panicking now they are turning out not to be different. Also constant comparison with Ireland.

Wales circuit breaker is interesting. It followed the back of half-term so started with all schools closed and then for the circuit breaker upper years of secondary were on-line only. Made no difference. However increase in cases may just be increased testing picking up what was already there but not being tested. (According to the BBC positivity rate was over 12% as opposed to 4% in Scotland). Wales have had roughly twice the levels of excess deaths per head as Scotland for the last 6 weeks and the figures seem to be stable there rather than trending down. Again Wales had much lower impact in Spring so may just be catching up now.

I don't think you have to go outside the UK to see that measures are futile at best and perhaps even counterproductive. The North West maintained Scottish style measures all the way through and cases and deaths kept going regardless. London had most things open up until the 2 week English reset. It then moved into tier 2 with little impact. Moves into tier 3 for what looks like political reasons and suddenly cases increase (actually there was an uptick in excess deaths a month ago which everyone ignored as it wasn't reflected in Covid monitoring). The South West, having been least impacted first time and with lightest measures has done some catching up over the last month in terms of excess death. Again this is not being picked up by Covid reporting.

From the examples above you can see that they are not even doing a decent job of measuring what is happening where in terms of impact. If they were getting this bit right then they would intervene about a month before excess deaths increase (deaths lag cases by a month). The evidence points to them doing the opposite and the epidemic progressing regardless.

In that context I have a certain sympathy with politicians ignoring the numbers and admitting they are just staying in line with US/EU and crossing their fingers. It would help if they were more honest about the "science" being less than useful and stopped scoring points off each other.

My DF is really not well and has had blood tests and we are hoping its not the big C Sad. I'm worried there may be delays in finding out and/or getting treatment due to Covid.

Its a worrying time but he's gone from being relatively healthy (although fast losing weight) to vomiting, shaking, muscle pains etc. (He tested negative so there's something else going on). Doctor would only talk to him over the phone initially but DM pushed for blood tests. Those blood test results haven't come back yet (does it take a week or two, I have no idea)

Xmas Blush Perils of being a morning person when no-one else is about. Feel free to scroll past the analysis.

Good morning all. Wrapping presents once I get DD3 off to school. She's had such a lovely week with full attendance for the whole class which is unheard off for last week normally. Not just me appreciating school these days.

Dinnafashyersel · 18/12/2020 07:49

Iwillnever good your DM pushed. Really hard to stay positive with so much obstruction to what should be priority healthcare.

Bytheloch · 18/12/2020 07:59

Slight political sidetrack to the cover of certain newspapers in Scotland today.

Interesting turn of events...

Bytheloch · 18/12/2020 08:01

Iwillneverbe hoping you get answers soon and your DM did the right thing pushing. Flowers

WouldBeGood · 18/12/2020 08:02

@Iwillneverbesatisfied that’s worrying. And no, blood tests shouldn’t take that long. Keep pushing, is my advice, even if it seems awkward.

Bikingbear · 18/12/2020 08:07

I will never be sorry to hear that.

Bytheloch just had a nosy through the papers, more changes to the school exams system, lockdowns galore.

iwillnever I'm sorry to hear that -
I agree, you're always out of your comfort zone when trying to get the right treatment these days it seems.

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2020 08:11

Oh I'm sorry about your dad ,willHis results hopefully won't take too long. My. Mums friend has had cancer treatment throughout.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 18/12/2020 08:14

Attendance has been very high in our large, west of Scotland secondary, thus far. I wondered if parents would pull kids out to isolate but it doesn't seem to have happened. Staff attendance very high too, more so than usual at this time of year, by my reckoning.

Coquohvan · 18/12/2020 08:52

@Iwillneverbesatisfied bloods at our surgery comes back next afternoon. Keep pushing for the results. Wish your dad all the best.
My daughter had surgery postponed from March got her op last week unfortunately has a infection, taken back in yesterday.
She says only 2 in her small ward a&e was quietist.
Urge anyone needing medical care pester your GP

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 18/12/2020 08:59

Thank you everyone. Apparently he was told end of the week (which is today) although when I had blood tests a few months back (anemic) it took over a week. I just want to be able to rule anything bad out.

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2020 09:12

If they said it will be back today I am sure that will., It would have been urgent.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/12/2020 09:57

Keeping fingers crossed for you will

Wbeezer · 18/12/2020 10:19

Good luck, my Dad has had two small ops this year, one was organised before lockdown and the other was a skin cancer that was investigated then removed since lockdown so things are still going ahead.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 18/12/2020 10:29

Iwillneverbesatisfied Flowers I hope your Dad gets a clear treatment path soon.

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2020 10:43

I hope all goes well. My DF was diagnosed during the summer and his care has been excellent and everything happened really quickly.

Christmas is a week today. I took a mildly illegal trip to the fort and hobbycraft, I now own a glue gun, I have a roll of poster roll which is apparently thick paper. Lady doesn't think it will rip so my plan is to perforated it in the middle.

I'm not convinced my cracker stuff will arrive on time so planning to raid a box of crackers I found in a cupboard- a January sale purchase.

Bikingbear · 18/12/2020 16:16

Obviously dangerous & wrong though because mini crackers could only be pulled with tongs & masks

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2020 17:20

I found a tiny box of Crackers at the bottom of a Christmas decorations box that I had bought for the DC from Woolies Shock. I was going to bin them but might hang on to them make a family heirloom
