@JamesMoriarty thanks for the update . It’s all well and good them saying use informal childcare .

Bikingbear · 22/12/2020 10:08

Surely the licence could be renewed online. But I'd also have expected DVLA to issue a reminder to renew it.

Oh SHIT.
Photo part of licence is valid until July 2012 (so less than 10 years out of date so hopefully don't need to take test again)?
I have a very small PO in a local Co op that I can walk to, yes.
No one else to take me, no.
I never knew the photo part needed updating. I never had a letter. I appreciate that isnt' the point, but it never occurred to me. I look pretty similar but yes older and the Rules are there for a reason.
I just tried online but I don't seem to be on the system.
I have moved address in that time so perhaps the notification letter never reached me. Which also means my address is wrong on it too.

Shit. really scared now.

52andblue · 22/12/2020 10:12

sorry to swear: not at people being kind and trying to advise.
I've had an appalling couple of weeks and this is the final (self inflicted I see) straw.

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 10:15

@52andblue looking online more it seems most people just get a small fine if pulled over. I bet lots of people in the same situation and the police will have seen it all before . You won’t be the first .

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/12/2020 10:21

52andblue, really don't worry about it. Yes it needs updated but you've made a mistake, not deliberately tried to commit a crime. You passed your test and have a licence, just send it off to be updated as soon as you can and go about your business as normal.

Wakeupin2022 · 22/12/2020 10:34

How many of us are now checking our licences?

DM had to renew her licence during lockdown. She had never had a photo one but thankfully managed to link it to her passport (which thankfully had a couple of months left).

Meant she didn't need to get new pic etc which was a relief as she was pretty much housebound due to DF.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/12/2020 10:42

I had an old paper licence, however, I rarely drove and didn't at all for many years. I had filled in the change address bit after one move and didn't send it off but had subsequently moved several times. I then started driving again. I was quite panicked as obviously the bit I'd filled in to change address wasn't my current address. In the end I got photos taken, sent it all off and was expecting a bit of bother but they just issued my new licence so all the worry and panic was for nothing.

Just go about your business, get your photos and a form and send it off. If you get stopped for any reason, just be honest. You noticed it was out of date so are sending/have sent off for an updated one.

I'd be surprised if they did anything more than just acknowledge that and crack on.

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 10:49

How does not having a valid license go with insurance and the like. It wouldn’t void it at all would it?

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/12/2020 10:56

Someone will know better than me but I'd say that the licence isn't invalid as OP has passed the relevant test etc. She hasn't been banned or had it removed, it's administratively out of date rather than invalid. Really just a money making exercise anyway as the old paper ones are fine as long as you don't move. There is no paper section at all on the newer ones.

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 10:59

Waxonfeckoff

I lifted this straight off the DVLA website

If your Photo Driving Licence has expired, you can be fined up to £1,000. Your photo licence must be renewed every 10 years; if you fail to renew it at that point, your driving licence will be invalid. You can choose to update your photo sooner than this if your appearance changes significantly. This can be done online via direct.gov.uk or by filling in the DVLA's D1 application form, which you can get online, from the DVLA form ordering service or from certain Post Office branches.

WaxOnFeckOff · 22/12/2020 11:02

Okay, but I still think what happens in practice will be different to what it says on the website. Once it's out of your hands and into theirs to process it will definitely feel better.

Cismyfatarse · 22/12/2020 11:05

I made it. I forgot the 10am booze thing and had to hang about twitching near the till until the magic hour.

It wasn't too bad. No queue into the shop or at the till.

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 11:10

I bet your glad it’s all done now. Go enjoy a mince pie to celebrate .

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 11:21

I just heard back from our primary school the school are only providing a place for children that both parents are key workers . So guess unpaid leave for me as I’m not a key worker and neither of us can work from home.

tinseltitsbumfannythelot · 22/12/2020 11:28

If only I could have hung about longer in m and s to get the sparkly clementine gin
Oliv5 · 22/12/2020 11:30

That sucks @Peppafrig such an unfair system, will leave a lot of families struggling.

Mrsjayy · 22/12/2020 11:34

Oh I tried to get the sparkly gin for my sister it had sold out ! I've had to go with non sparkles Xmas Sad

Mrsjayy · 22/12/2020 11:35

Ah no ,peppafrig .that's shit can you go on Furlough ?

Coquohvan · 22/12/2020 11:39

@52andblue have you checked online against your license number?
Use license number - NI number and Post Code of address when you applied for your licence.

www.gov.uk/view-driving/license

Unfortunately if your license has expired ie not valid your car insurance will not cover you I’m sorry.

This is from my Police Officer SIL
Could you get a taxi with your children to the hospital?

PM me if you need further happy to help

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 11:43

I’m not sure if I can be furloughed will need to wait on my work getting back to me . A few of us will be in the same position not sure they could operate without us all. I just hope it is only till the 18th. Trouble is anyone I could ask to have them Is working from home. So I literally have no one to ask.

RJnomore1 · 22/12/2020 11:47

Unfortunately I think it’s the same most places this time, either lone parent or both parents need to be key workers and they’re saying prioritise cat 1 and 2 key workers so maybe not even then

It’s shite 💐 it’s really not the schools fault though it’s shite for everyone .

Mrsjayy · 22/12/2020 11:50

I don't know how they expect folk to actually function.

RJnomore1 · 22/12/2020 11:52

I don’t have small kids to worry about and I’m struggling mentally to function.

Peppafrig · 22/12/2020 11:52

Oh yes I know it’s not the schools fault. It wasn’t a problem last lockdown as we were both furloughed as construction sites were shut down . But obviously that isn’t the case in tier4 . The head actually said as long as they are watched don’t worry about school work . If I can get any family members to take them . But I don’t have anyone. Who would take three kids in two weeks while they are trying to work from home. I couldn’t ask that of anyone.
