Thread #3456

Released from our dirty T4, but still bamboozled. Let’s keep each other sane on here...

Glad to hear of legal challenge - I have huge concerns that the government is making decisions with inadequate challenge and scrutiny. Which leads to sloppy decision making and potentially bad decision making - a couple of challenges might make them sharpen up their processes. Have no idea really what the right decision is but the announcement on Tuesday made a nonsense of their framework, which was agreed by the parliament...

My seven year old, turned eight in lockdown and so much harder work than his ten year old brother. He was really good with his school work but he really missed playing. Ten year old mostly refuses to play the sort of crazy creative stuff the younger one likes. And he hated zoom so much even when we set up activities. He would walk off and tell me to hang up for him 😬. He got really emotional and would have huge meltdowns over nothing.
Roblox saved us as it is a bit off the wall and creative, it suited him. I turned off chat function but he would zoom his friends and they’d all join games together and chat away about nothing.
I’d say he’s still not totally over it all now though, there was a huge improvement over summer when we could meet people outside in parks, took full advantage of it and he’s loving being back at school but he’s still over emotional at times.

Weirdly it had a good effect on my ten year old, he lost a lot of nervous tics he had and got rid of his stressy stomach.

Interesting news on the judicial review... I'm not sure what impact it will have though. I think all the court can do is quash the decision, and the SG have to make it again, but given the "framework" for setting the tiers has a hefty dose of "taking into account the context" and "all other things considered" they'd probably make the same decision again. And even if they didn't, the next review is Tuesday anyway, so they could make an entirely different decision then anyway. The court can't say it was a "wrong" decision and the decision should have been "x" - but that the way the decision was taken was improper, so it is invalid. At least, that's how it works in planning... Assume it is the same here.

Unfortunately, I think the (rushed, and not properly debated) legislation underpinning everything is so vague, and is all at the discretion of the First Minister, it would be hard to argue that she was exceeding her powers as, in terms of Covid, she has All The Power.

I do think, on a Scottish and UK basis, this could well run for years. So many decisions made and restrictions imposed seem so disproportionate, and I really don't think there's been the scrutiny that should have been given to the legislation.

NotAnActualSheep · 11/12/2020 21:01

Oh balls. The judicial review failed, as they are allowed to consider things other than data. Still, I hope it makes them sit up and consider the impact this is having on people.

rookiemere · 11/12/2020 21:24

I am depressed. Spoke to the elderly DPs asked if they had a date for their vaccine yet - apparently according to Telegraph it will be February before 80+ living at home in Scotland will get it, so there's no way we'll be out of this sordid mess by Easter at that rate.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 11/12/2020 21:25

I'm quite looking forward to having the Glasgow shops to myself. There aren't many advantages to living in manky, covid-ridden Glasgow but we do have good shops. So you shire folk can stay away. WinkGrin

Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 21:45

Rookie, not sure if this is right but a friend of my Auntie apparently was getting her first one yesterday in the Alloa area. So fingers crossed the telegraph is wrong.

rookiemere · 11/12/2020 21:46

@icanboogieboogiewoogie I worked in Glasgow for a year and the shops and layout thereof, was definitely superior to Edinburgh. Before having DS I used to go through every year for Christmas shopping. Now I'm getting all nostalgic, but I guess this may not be the year for a return visit.

rookiemere · 11/12/2020 21:48

@Bikingbear I do hope so - I hadn't realised how much I had pinned my hopes on them getting the vaccine quickly.

Bikingbear · 11/12/2020 21:59

Rookie remember though they wont be fully protected until a week after the second jag.

RaspberryCoulis · 11/12/2020 22:18

Have already had a teen-related rule breaking. Eldest - who is self-isolating - simply HAD to have a Nando's for dinner. None of those in East Dun. So off to Clydebank it was.

Do I feel guilty? Not a bit of it.

randomsabreuse · 11/12/2020 22:38

What is actually in East Dun? Apart from Waitrose...

Need to get to an H&M as I went before Tier 4 kicked in and they left a security tag in.

Haven't even got a decent Tesco's!

littlbrowndog · 11/12/2020 22:39

We love a day out in Glasgow.

Everything so cheap compared to Edinburgh.

Prosecco on the train

Shopping

Eating

Visits rellies

Then out again for eating drinking

Such such fun

Then home on the last train. The vomit rocket I think it was called

Next year next year

Aww. We like to do it the other way round. We have lots of fun tutting at the Edinburgh drink prices. Grin

Apparently all the student going-home testing is going well... Across all Scotland there have been about 4 (count them...) asymptomatic positives identified. So probably no need to worry that they would cause increased cases in university towns just before Christmas.

Errr.... Ummm.....

Well there are a few nice wee cafes and shops in Milngavie? There's a Morrison's in Bishopbriggs. Dobbies?

Is there not that industrial estate in bishopbriggs? Next, M&S, Matalan etc? Not been there for years but remember it not being too bad.
RaspberryCoulis · 11/12/2020 23:39

I haven'y been in a while - there is a m&s but it's food not clothes. There is a Next, Matalan, I think there used to be a Peacocks but haven't they gone to the wall? And a poundland, B&Q and I think Sports Drect.

PapsofJura · 12/12/2020 00:05

I braved the threat of prosecution by crossing the border into Glasgow today to go shopping and it was so good. Loved being in the shops and seeing the lights. But it did feel as though the heart had been stripped out as there were no entertainers and no Sally Ann. And I actually missed the usual hustle and bustle.

Bytheloch · 12/12/2020 00:19

My friends have been to the theatre tonight (well, yesterday as it’s now after 12)😫. In the week we’ve had the chief constable appearing on the megalomaniac’s daily broadcast using veiled threats about travel between tiers, my friends (obviously not in Scotland) have been at the theatre, behaving like grown ups 🤷‍♀️
The stark differences between the nations is incredibly frustrating to say the least. I actually don’t think I can hear another veiled threat and misery message from anyone here before Christmas- it will kill off any joy I’ve managed to muster for my DCs sake.

I keep sneaking out... Had to drive DS1 to sit an exam in Falkirk and went to Hobbycraft and tomorrow I'm going to St Andrews to collect officially Covid free DS2 from uni and I will go to the bookshop and probably M&S (not available in Clacks) I wouldn't go out just to get shopping but when I have to go out for reasons that are allowed I don't feel guilty about tacking on an errand or two. It's a change from the first lockdown when I was very law abiding but I am still careful about hygiene and social distancing.

Bikingbear · 12/12/2020 00:45

Bytheloch, the Royals W&K even managed to make it to a theatre with the 3 weans. Rotten the the manky Scots aren't being given the same opportunities. Just the same as rotten for the venues and the staff, everyone from the casts to the cleaners.

It just doesn't feel very Christmassy to me at the moment either. I need to do something about it this weekend. Tomorrow i want to finish the decorations in the house and then we might go to the garden centre to see what else we can find.

I might get my kids to bake with my on Sunday.

titsbumfannythelot · 12/12/2020 07:02

I'll be dragging my sorry east ren backside to Silverburn over the next few days. I hate shopping but needs must.

Bikingbear · 12/12/2020 07:32

I've been very lazy with shopping. Getting value from the Amazon prime subscription.

Even stupid stuff that I'd normally go to a shop to buy, get Amazon to deliver. Not good for the long term.

titsbumfannythelot · 12/12/2020 07:37

I've ordered a fair bit from Amazon myself, but can't get the last few bits and bobs on there.
