Totally agree @Covidnomore, and it was actually very refreshing to see her getting something approaching a real grilling on Andrew Marr on Sunday. He had figures/data that contradicted a lot of her claims, and actually said that there was a theme emerging where she presented one version of reality but the data/evidence showed another (education, COVID, independence..). Let's hope more journalists actually have the balls to do it from now on, because it's infuriating that she gets away with so much blatant dishonesty.

And yes I did note that since Scotland is harder hit than England in the second wave we have to wait till the end of the pandemic to compare figures, whereas it was all the rage to make comparisons back in the summer when things looked better (using data so dodgy the statistics authority slapped their wrists about it).

littlbrowndog · 01/12/2020 09:42

Well yes

I have to pay tax on my grant

The more I think about this 500 pounds the more I dislike it

Who in nhs will get it

She needs to be transparent on this

It is starting to feel like some workers are not important in our country

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/12/2020 09:47

I see some shops are committing to stay closed on boxing day which I think is a great idea and should be a cross the board. I appreciate we've been missing them but I think it's fair to give staff a break. The ones I've seen have mainly been grocery chains like Iceland etc where staff have been working throughout.

here it is

Covidnomore · 01/12/2020 09:50

Y0u my family live in Tier 4. I was previously Tier 1 in England going into Tier 2 this week.

My live has been far less restricted in many ways but the virus has not increased at the same rate.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/12/2020 09:51

I've worked full time throughout, a large chunk with two kids at home. It sucked massively. But because I drive a spreadsheet for a private company it is considered worthless at the moment, even though it contributes to ensuring huge financial companies (and therefore the whole system) don't fail. The good worker/bad worker binary they're creating here is really unhealthy.

littlbrowndog · 01/12/2020 09:53

Thanks wouldbegood

anon444877 · 01/12/2020 09:59

Couldn't agree more statistically just struggling private sector not anointed sphere of public eh?

anon444877 · 01/12/2020 10:00

If only the online shops closed on Boxing Day too - because that sector has been pummelled throughout 2020, no bonus for warehouse or delivery staff.

Can only hope they've had extra remuneration from their employers.

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2020 10:01

I work for the government but as I’m neither employed nor self employed I’ve had nothing despite a major drop in income. But I am grateful to have income.

It’s the private businesses, like the soft play man, musicians, theatres, charity shops, pubs and restaurants that my heart bleeds for.

Plus police, fire and prison services who’ve worked throughout. Not “heroes” obviously - seems wrong. And lawyers in the criminal law and mental health sectors who’ve been seeing clients and representing them for rubbish pay.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/12/2020 10:03

So, do you think they are looking today and thinking they've done the wrong thing, or just the usual belief that they are completely correct and we are all too stupid to know that?

Well thats Debenham's gone.

After yesterday's news about Arcade its devastating.

This is what all leaders need to focus on. Not playing bloody political games.

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2020 10:16

Exactly @Covidnomore. I’m sad about Debenhams as it’s where I get my bras.

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2020 10:17

@WaxOnFeckOff surely they’ve got to be thinking that it’s not been the roaring success they’d thought?

Covidnomore · 01/12/2020 10:20

Would I hadn't even thought about that! Me too Shock

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/12/2020 10:23

But surely anyone with half a brain could have foreseen this?

So conclusion can only be that either they don't have half a brain or that there is a bigger agenda here that they think is to their ultimate advantage and I don't have half a brain to work out what that is.

It's also not just staff employed directly by debenhams, there are a lot of franchises within the stores, are those counted in the job loss figures?

It's also the supply chain - there will be many more than the retail staff

Selfishly gutted as their guys stuff was ideal for DH. Good quality, decent style...

Bikingbear · 01/12/2020 10:31

It's awful for people in retail, clothing, people aren't going out so simply they aren't buying clothes. By "out" I mean, pubs, office, wedding, Christmas nights etc. Nobody is getting dressed up to sit in the living room.
However it could eventually leave space for smaller independent retailers to fill the gaps.

Although I used to like Dorothy Perkins and Top Shop but haven't been in either for years. Not sure why.
One thing I can't stand shopping is clutter. So that might be part of it. The shops just feel cluttered. Bit like Asda.

And yes there has been so little support for the Arts in general. That money could have been put to much better use.

Bytheloch · 01/12/2020 10:34

@runningpink 🙌🏻🤣

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/12/2020 10:37

It's very true, I have a massive wardrobe and I've not touched 95% this year. I sew, and I'm making leggings and jumpers rather than nice dresses.

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 01/12/2020 11:35

Nicola did get a real grilling on Andrew Marr Grin then on the bbc breakfast show I think it was the next day, she tried to rescue it, only for the presenter to say something like "that's not what I asked you" Grin

But of course it's the big bad media picking on poor wee nippy.

There's lots of anger on my social media about the £500. Either its not enough or doesn't help those who really need it.

Aaargh, how have you managed to fill up 6 pages of an entirely new thread since yesterday?!

I agree with the general discomfort over the NHS announcement. Of course I'm sure many NHS workers would appreciate a proper payrise and better working conditions and so on (such as more colleagues so they aren't worked off their feet the whole time, and more funding for equipment and services so they aren't trying to work miracles with what little they have). But why just the NHS and not other keyworkers, who have also been working their arses off with much less public recognition? And yes, I'm sure £500 would be much more appreciated by the Arcadia and Debenhams workers, or the soft play people, or musicians, hoteliers, theatre workers and so on and so on. It does seem aimed at getting a quick few virtue signalling pointers out there while ignoring the much much larger issues in society. I'm also pissed off at the "ranking" of workers into virtuous (NHS), slightly virtuous (other key workers and public sector) and not worthy of any consideration (private sector, basically... who will all live in level 3 or 4 so are dirty and contagious as well as money grabbing bastards who don't need childcare). Plus, the way the NHS has let down so many people since March in potentially fatal ways (not the fault of the workers, I know), I'm feeling a bit grumpy.

I'm also wondering how the "give gift vouchers this Christmas" campaign is going... Not sure I'd trust any current high Street presence to still be there in January, sadly. (of course, when NS said that, she didn't mean gift vouchers for big companies owned by evil English Tories. She meant small independent Scottish companies selling pure milled haggis or organically reared soap. And she can't be blamed for us deliberately twisting her instruction advice).
