This is an ongoing thread for Scottish mumsnetters - or indeed non Scottish mumsnetters such as myself, to comment on ongoing covid matters pertinent to ourselves, in a hopefully not too partisan and friendly fashion.

@WouldBeGood

I’m in the fortunate position that schools closing early doesn’t really affect me, and as long as it’s only for that short period it should be ok for DS.

Yes to an Advent Calendar of Doom 😃

Calendar do doom 😂😂😂😂

De-lurked to tell you that made me laugh. It’s so good to find some fun & sense in this chaos . Thanks all.

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 10:52

These lurkers need to join in more!

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 10:57

I'm sure Nicola knows all about the leaks before they happen tbh

No doubt about this at all. It's really annoying.

I think secondary schools / colleges / unis will probably have the extended Christmas break but i don't think primary schools and nurseries will. Given informal childcare isn't allowed in level 4 what would people do to get to work?

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 10:59

Definitely need to delurk and join in.

DH was going on about something being said about not hugging your gran at Christmas as you could kill her. Not sure what it was he saw.

However, why not actually ask your gran if she wants a hug or not? Does her view of her own risk not count? Or don't they just not want the numbers to look bad?

It's a fine line to keep numbers high enough to justify restrictions and keep people scared enough, and also having them low enough to show how well we are doing... Schrodinger's statistics?

RaspberryCoulis · 27/11/2020 11:03

@Tierful

Ah found it. The marvels of google

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/leaked-document-shows-scottish-government-23075610.amp?

I hate these fucking leaks - just treat us like adults!!

The Scottish news were reporting this on BBC this morning.

In our school S5 and S6 - where most of the Covid cases have been - were due to be off on exam leave from about then until the end of the month anyway. So if they leave on 23rd Dec, they would be off for around 5 weeks. Taking 2/5ths of the school population out might help push numbers down even further, while not impacting on the education of S1-S4.

Christmasbiscuit · 27/11/2020 11:19

Ffs bit shit for those of us who won't be socialising over Christmas anyway. Adding my daily "I'm fed up" here.

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 11:23

The only decent thing is a 3 week break from school might actually bring the numbers down. Let's not forget Glasgow has been restricted since 1Sept about 2 weeks after schools went back.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 11:25

Well I'm on holiday today and obvs a bit restricted in what I can do being in 4 and all. So I'm still in my dressing gown, now going to treat myself to a nice shower with actual shower gel and not just soap and I also treated myself to new underwear recently which I am going to wear despite my only aspirations of the day being to make French toast for lunch. Bought white bread in anticipation. So that's my day planned out.

Rae36 · 27/11/2020 11:26

I'm planning to take my secondary age kids out early anyway so an official close would suit me fine. But my kids are not exam years yet (well one is s3 so getting close) and I can work from home.

I think it's fucking ridiculous that Edinburgh schools don't finish till the 22nd anyway (23rd next year). 23rd? Seriously? Then that long drag after New Year.

Feeling pissed off as ever today. Listened to Jason Leitch on Radio Scotland this morning and wanted to throw something. I started off thinking he was the calm voice of reason, now the very sound of him gives me the rage.

I tend to agree with this. I think there must be some sort of invisible spread in schools, where else can it me coming from? Everything else is shut.

Lots of teenagers with only very mild symptoms that don't get picked up, and quite vague symptoms in kids too? One of mine often claims to have a sore tummy when he's feeling a bit worried, maybe one of those was actually covid and I didn't realise. 14 yr old had a cold last week with a bit of a headache, sneezing all the time so we assumed it was definitely a cold. But what if it wasn't?

anon444877 · 27/11/2020 11:30

So agree, 18th and a week before Christmas where in normal times you could go to Christmas shows, concerts, carols etc and then a prompt return in January!

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 11:33

The construction industry has for many years been Friday before Christmas to Monday after New Year. Mainly because they found the half weeks too disruptive.

Direwolfwrangler · 27/11/2020 11:42

I have also heard the 11th being suggested today. I would be very surprised if that happens as it would be so disruptive. The 18th is more likely (just my opinion) as I think most are already finishing then. I may well be proved wrong Grin

Rae I heard that too briefly, at the bit with a caller who said she was ‘an oldie’ who would be on her own this year and could she have a glass of champagne in the garden with her friends who would also be on their own? She appeared to be actually asking his permission🤔 He started breaking it down into the complexity of doing that, how she'd have to form a bubble etc, etc.
FFS. I literally had to turn it off. The thought of elderly on their own, being micro-managed by a government spokesman over a garden meet up in the no-doubt, freezing cold, possibly even raining outdoors. What have we become? Meh.

littlbrowndog · 27/11/2020 11:45

Jason gives me the rage as well

Glad to hear the tier 4s are getting washed. Did Jason send a note at that all the tier 4s are to get a wash every day 😉

Tierful · 27/11/2020 11:47

RaspberryCoulis I looked on bbc online as first port of call, there’s an article on there now. That’s good to know about secondaries though.

I just think if the shops open back on the 11th (T4!) has schools close on the 11th for a week of home learning (ha!) I can’t imagine what the inevitable consequences will be Hmm

Tierful · 27/11/2020 11:49

Normally I’d have my annual leave booked in by now - but there’s very much a meh feeling about trying to plan anything.

Well folks, I think I can officially declare that I am the source of all the covid cases as I've only been having a shower every 2nd day with just a wash in between.

Given I don't go anywhere and don't work up a sweat at any point, I was figuring I was doing okay.

Sorry folks, I'll try to do better and you can watch the positive test rate plummet...

Also for those who wear earrings, I recommend that you put some in from time to time regardless as a lot of people have had the holes heal over.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 11:59

I've had to book my annual leave as DH is NHS and they had to submit, i think, about 80% of their requests for the year 21/22 already. So we just put finger in the air and shove the dates in. DH already declared he's not having the vaccine so if it's required to travel abroad, he's not going.

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2020 12:01

Wise words @WaxOnFeckOff. But I do advise against hoop earrings after a nasty incident with a mask.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 12:04

Oh that sounds sore. I have studs in and I try to remember to put them in a couple of times a week.

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2020 12:09

I am very shallow so do makeup and earrings every day. I was rocking some nice tortoiseshell hoops when that happened 🙄 I had to do the pretending nothing is wrong thing as I exited pets at home

Tierful · 27/11/2020 12:09

Earrings?! Yikes (checks earlobes). I’ve not even worn my wedding rings in months.

Tierful · 27/11/2020 12:12

In all seriousness I think it would be good for our teachers to have a longer break. They’ve had a particularly tough few months in our school for various reasons.

Though I’m sure the same applies to all front line staff and there’s no option there for a break, indeed the opposite will likely be the case.

littlbrowndog · 27/11/2020 12:16

My baby loves earrings can be hurtie

Cmon wax. Let’s get these figures plummeting

If you cleaned your house as well with all the windows open. You will hit tier 0 in no time.
