This is an ongoing thread for Scottish mumsnetters - or indeed non Scottish mumsnetters such as myself, to comment on ongoing covid matters pertinent to ourselves, in a hopefully not too partisan and friendly fashion.

I'm done with kids stuff.
DH, I have one thing, and that's doesn't really cut it as hes got a birthday too.
And I need to dream up something for my mum

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/11/2020 08:50

Schools closing early would be a nightmare for us, we'd have to furlough staff, adjust everyone's invoices, we'd have some parents wanting care but probably not enough to be viable but then the ones who want it will be folk who really need it...nightmare

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 08:50

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 08:52

@RaspberryCoulis I reckon you're right!

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 08:54

I'd be really annoyed if I lived or ran a business in south Ayrshire right now!

DuesToTheDirt · 27/11/2020 09:06

@40weekswithno2, thanks for that, it's really informative. And shows clearly why Midlothian was actually kept at level 3, much to their disgust.

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2020 09:06

@Bikingbear I think it’s more soul destroying to keep restrictions in place all round it to save the day. And then tell us constantly how dangerous it is.

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 09:08

@DuesToTheDirt you're right, sorry Midlothian should be under level 3

Bytheloch · 27/11/2020 09:08

There’s also probably more people with a paper cut than Covid in Orkney right now.

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 09:10

@Bytheloch and there are no cases at all in Na h-Eileanan Siar - I don't see why they can be in level 0

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2020 09:11

It’s hardly surprising that the more densely populated areas have more cases. I’m very bored if it all and very crabbit.

IwishIwasyoda · 27/11/2020 09:29

I can’t even be bothered following the statistics as they don’t tell me what I need to know e.g.:

  • how many ICU beds across scotland are available to take Covid patients
  • what % of positive covid cases require hospitalisation and what is the average length of stay
  • What is the NHS frontline hospital staff sickness absence % and how does this compare to the previous three years. What % of of staff sickness absence is directly attributable to covid i.e. % test result, or self-isolation

I could go on about testing statistics, identification of routes of transmission etc. But I won’t. The lack of transparency is astounding really

titsbumfannythelot · 27/11/2020 09:39

I would be interested to know the composition of people who work in areas of higher risk. We're in East ren and anyone I know who has had Covid contracted it in hospital or care setting or supermarket. There was an interesting table posted on LinkedIn yesterday from PHE which seemed to confirm those as most likely setting to contract Covid.

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 09:43

@titsbumfannythelot I know, anyone I know that has had confirmed Covid either caught it in hospital or work for the nhs.
Out of an office of 10 nhs workers (non clinical), 8 of them caught Covid. Apparently none of them are sitting 2 metres apart, windows can't be opened and they're all sharing a kitchenette.
Arguably a lot of their work could be done from home with a bit of planning.

RaraRachael · 27/11/2020 10:13

It looks like we have the same infection rates as PIL but still can't visit them even though we're all in the same tier (1.5).

An advent calendar sounds like great idea - this page is my haven of hilarity in all the bonkerness that's issued forth from the SG.

I hope they don't close schools early. It will be a great opportunity for more teacher bashing from a certain organisation who are already up in arms as they think teachers want to go on strike (I don't) Hmm

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 10:16

Friend has a teacher friend who has been contacted by union suggesting that from 11th school will be online. They had an 18th finish date so a week early.

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2020 10:23

I’m in the fortunate position that schools closing early doesn’t really affect me, and as long as it’s only for that short period it should be ok for DS.

Yes to an Advent Calendar of Doom 😃

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 10:27

Waxon I wonder if that's the plan, online from the 11th, close on 18th.
I just wonder how that's going to tie in with school prelims.

Just me that's noticing the centralization of the school dates and the dictate from SG instead of the regional variations that have worked locally for years.

Tierful · 27/11/2020 10:32

Our primary would normally be doing all nativity & parties that last week so wouldn’t be missing out on learning anyway. However I do understand that the classes are quite a bit behind where previous cohorts would be at this stage of primary, and this would be an extra week to catch up. Can any teachers comment on this?

No way we’d be getting any home learning done so they would just have to write off another week.

But they’re primary, they’ll catch up eventually but secondary and exam years are a whole different ball game.

Where are these leaked rumours? I’ve not seen anything reported?

Tierful · 27/11/2020 10:36

Ah found it. The marvels of google

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/leaked-document-shows-scottish-government-23075610.amp?

I hate these fucking leaks - just treat us like adults!!

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2020 10:38

@Tierful I agree. It’s hugely disrespectful to the populace to treat us like this.

AgentCooper · 27/11/2020 10:42

@Tierful absolutely. You think Nicola would fucking say something regarding these repeated leaks.

Holidays until 11 Jan is going to be carnage for lots of working parents.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 10:45

I'm sure Nicola knows all about the leaks before they happen tbh

By the sounds of that article, they seem to be setting up to cancel exams again.

That's behind day 13 on the advent calendar. They'll certainly wait until schools are shut before announcing that one.

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 10:45

The Daily Record is the one I found last night. The one I heard about discussions about the 11th was a friend of a friend...

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 10:47

Turning the 2 half weeks onto full weeks probably isn't that bad but the extra week of home schooling Sad

I can just about cope with the eldest if nursery is still open.
