This is an ongoing thread for Scottish mumsnetters - or indeed non Scottish mumsnetters such as myself, to comment on ongoing covid matters pertinent to ourselves, in a hopefully not too partisan and friendly fashion.

No need to lurk folks Smile

Right, these crackers, I'm thinking you could start with 2 of those yards of jaffa cakes - i'm happy to empty the jaffa cakes and dispose of them appropriately, tape the boxes together and then fill them with enough hats, jokes and gifts for everyone (plus extra spoons and gravy boats) then cover with wrap and decorate as appropriate.

When pulled they should break in the middle where the boxes are taped?

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/11/2020 23:04

I'm thinking i might have a spare fabric roll tube in the garage. They're 1.5m so a solid start...however I'll happily eat 2m of jaffa cake

WouldBeGood · 26/11/2020 23:04

The SG is now making itself look ridiculous with this advice.

It’s also disappointing that we were promised a four nation approach.

The UK is too small for these silly local measures. And making your law a laughing stock isn’t clever.

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/11/2020 23:13

Agree, the concept of people sharing Christmas whilst maintaining 2m distancing is ludicrous, as is the recommendation we meet for a Christmas walk. It's December. In Scotland. Not happening

WouldBeGood · 26/11/2020 23:17

If they thought it should be banned they should have banned it

I do go for a walk every christmas day, to the pub and back, not happening this year though.

RSV: Respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults.
Thanks, is that what causes viral wheeze in little kids? My youngest was a nightmare two winters ago when he was about 2.
WaxOnFeckOff · 26/11/2020 23:53

I don't know @Bikingbear, I just googled it. My Ds2 always ends up with a cold going to his chest since he was a toddler. He's also had bronchiolitis, croup, post streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Also gets constant sore throats, tonsillitis etc Otherwise a healthy guy but probably needs his tonsils out. He was breastfed longer than DS1. DS1 never gets anything. I think some folk just have more of a predilection to chestiness but I'm no Dr.

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 00:11

I don't think I've ever gone for a walk on Christmas Day, but my memories of Christmas is that is always dry and crisp.

Except one year when I was a small child and it was snowing. Dad lifted me over a pile of snow. I also spotted Santa on Christmas morning going into another building Wink.

I'm liking the idea of actually making the crackers. I definitely need to make two, but that's a lot of Jaffa cakes - I was trying to loose the spare tyre not add another. Hmmm...

Talking about music, how long does it take people to get to Grade 5? That's a fairly decent level isn't it?
I have desires to switch my not very good keyboard skills to piano. I broke the keyboard by falling on it, while pregnant and replaced it with a digital piano because they look nicer. Time has been a big factor in my lack of progress but LO is getting biggerGrin

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 00:24

When we were kids we got sent out to run laps round our council estate, dad always pretending to time us with a broken clock to encourage us to go faster the next lap...meanwhile my DM got peace to try to get dinner on the table for 9 of us. As teenagers we would walk to the pub on Christmas day.

Once I moved out, I would generally walk to my mums for Christmas and back so I could have a drink.

When the kids came along we would take them out for fresh air christmas day and as they got older we would go with scooters or bikes or remote control cars, even older then it was to the pub. :o

No real incentive to leave the house this year though.

My DHs favourite photo of me was taken on a walk on christmas day - i'd recently found out I was pregnant with DS1 after 4 years of trying, it was snowing and we walked up the flotterstone path in the pentlands - such a happy day.

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 00:42

As I got older I have many memories of going out to collect the oldies on Christmas Day and love seeing kids out with bikes, scooters and taking dolly out for a walk! There is something special about it.

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/11/2020 00:49

Honestly it's one of my favourite things about Christmas. Up and presents done, some of the dinner prep done, out and about and then home to finish getting dinner ready and getting cosied in for the evening.

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/11/2020 07:25

There's a huge differences between a walk- which can be as long or short as desired, isn't weather dependent, and may well end with alcohol at a lovely pub vs that being the only way to see your family though isn't there? A wee post (or pre) dinner wander is it's nice and dry vs a pre arranged hour come rain or shine as it's the only way granny sees the kids?

Bikingbear · 27/11/2020 07:34

@WouldBeGood

If they thought it should be banned they should have banned it
But at what cost?

It's December, dark, rotten weather, after months of social distancing, which is sucking joy out of life, job losses, people's MH has taken a pounding.

Banning would do one of two things; Be the final nail in the coffin for those suffering from depression December, already a horrible month for suicide and domestic abuse; or alternatively people would put two fingers up and ignore and party on!

Its not just as simple as banning Christmas. I know people compare it to Eid and Diwali, but are they also linked with suicide etc?

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/11/2020 07:40

I'm just dreading a month of daily "you're allowed to do this but you shouldn't" lectures.

rookiemere · 27/11/2020 07:56

@StatisticallyChallenged well sorry but that's what we're going to be getting Grin, along with further intrusions from SG into our personal lives including cleaning tips and top tips on how to cook your turkey so nobody gets food poisoning.

Since adulthood we always go for a walk on Christmas Day after the meal which we tend to have at normal lunchtime so either up Braid Hill if at home, around Kinnoull Hill if at Perth or Preston Park if at SILs. So much better than the dreary Christmases of my youth at my GPs where the entire day revolved around being inside .

rookiemere · 27/11/2020 07:58

Actually for December, it would be kind of neat if she had an advent calendar of coronavirus tips for December, so Day 1 open the flap to reveal - Wash your hands after handling turkey etc.

Rookie we could all guess at what's inside the next door.

It was leaked last night they are looking at schools closing from 18th to 11th. And what I thought initially until I heard the 11th rumour. Probably less disruptive to schools and parents than the 11th. But that still risks kids isolating on 25th.

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 08:11

What's anyone's best guess at what level east Dunbartonshire will go into after 11th Dec? Cases have been dropping quite rapidly but I'm thinking we'll be in whatever level Glasgow city is because of the shared hospitals. Any thoughts?

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/11/2020 08:17

Hard to tell - doesn't Inverclyde have shared hospitals too?

40weekswithno2 · 27/11/2020 08:21

@StatisticallyChallenged I'm not sure actually, will see what I can find out on google.

Tier 87, obvs. Lumped in with Glasgow the same as West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire.....

Total pile of shit, have totally lost it with all of the council and government idiots, and Nippy Nicola's Daily Deathcount on the telly. Have stopped listening to be honest. Earlier on I signed up to complete their fortnightly questionnaires which were said to influence their choices, so I reported faithfully that I was going nowhere and seeing practically nobody but they can fuck right off if they think I'm complying any longer.

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/11/2020 08:30

This has shown up some of the issues with centralising hospital care so much - it has its benefits but I can't help thinking this may have been more manageable if we still had more hospitals and could have more easily created area specific covid facilities.

anon444877 · 27/11/2020 08:35

Reminded me - we used to go for a Boxing Day walk as a child, and I always had to take the ddog out in previous years. Maybe a family walk is a good plan.

anon444877 · 27/11/2020 08:40

I'm dreading schools closing early as there's no childcare available over Christmas hooks as it is, even if my kids would go to childcare, and I've not got much vacation outside the key days off.

It'll be stressful this Christmas working whilst entertaining them, but then wouldn't that just be the fitting finale to 2020?

I can see the logic for closing schools early, don't get me wrong. And I've done most of my Christmas shopping bar stocking fillers already!
