I love yous all. I'm in East Dunbartonshire and my daughter lives in a wee flat in Glasgow. After a group chat consisting of a majority of level 1 residents, one of whom advises us to keep smiling while we follow the rules, ( I kid you not) this thread has restored my faith in people's ability to think for themselves. According to one of them the ban on having my daughter out for a walk and a cup of soup in the garden with our hot water bottles and blankets is to save the hospitals in my area. There are no hospitals in East Dunbartonshire.

Does anyone know - if your weegie daughter were fined for selfishly putting everyone at risk by having a walk with her mum in East Dunbartonshire would that mean she had a criminal record that required to be disclosed to future employers? Is their a distinction between a civil and criminal offence? Would the fine be for a civil offence (like a fine for speeding).

NotAnActualSheep · 21/11/2020 10:12
@NotAnActualSheep it’s all just total shite and so counterproductive.

I’m a podgy old woman and should be at self improving yoga class just now, then the gym with my DS. Instead I’m lying in bed, wondering how long it is until it’s acceptable to drink
Ha! Lockdown rules. Every time is acceptable to drink.

But yes... everything is so samey and anything active or social we plan is at the mercy of the weather, so there's the anxiety that it may be cancelled. Zoom yoga/ pilates can only go so far (and I end up straining my neck to look at the next move and falling over) and that's if the technology works.

WouldBeGood · 21/11/2020 10:14

Yeah.. I should maybe look on it like camping and maintain a constant level of slight pishedness. 😃

NotAnActualSheep · 21/11/2020 10:16
@NotAnActualSheep i know some hotels were offering a space to work for the day, with WiFi and coffees and food.
Ooooh. Thanks... that's worth looking into. At the moment it's moot as I don't have any work, but I was thinking for post-covid. I was WFH before it became fashionable, and was getting a bit fed up with it even then.

Bikingbear · 21/11/2020 10:17

Are either you or the Weegie daughter on your own?
You can still cross boundaries to form a support bubble.

And even if you weren't I actually doubt the police would do anything.

Bikingbear · 21/11/2020 10:24

Daft question, Glasgow seems to be surrounded by 'Shires', Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Dumbartonshire, Ayrshire etc

What does shire actually mean?
And why is there some areas that are Shires and others like Lothian and Tayside that are just names?

I've never really thought about it until thinking about teirs and boundaries.

rogueantimatter · 21/11/2020 10:26

bikingbear No. I live with my grumpy working from home husband and she lives with a very stressed overworked teacher. (One day he had to do playground and lunch duties as well as teaching all day and providing online work)

Am very grateful we're all in work btw. I keep thinking that if I'm finding it hard as someone who has been only very lightly affected by the current situation what on earth must it be like for people in much more difficult circumstances.

RaspberryCoulis · 21/11/2020 10:34

Afaik the fines for being naughty and committing the heinous crime of leaving your council area is a fixed penalty like a speeding ticket. Pay it within the time limit and you don't get a criminal record, no implication for PVG or other disclosures.

If you refuse to take a fixed penalty and insist on it being dealt with through the court, or refuse to pay the fine and are hauled up in front of court for non- payment that's a different matter.

There is another whole layer to this of "filtering" where authorities are encouraged to disregard old and minor convictions when the person is of good character otherwise.

Mrsjayy · 21/11/2020 10:41

Shire is an old word meaning dividing land (I think) and Lothian and Tayside are newer areas.

Mrsjayy · 21/11/2020 10:43

There would need to be Marshalls ticketing people like traffic wardens I mean how else would it be monitored.

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/11/2020 10:51

I think Lothian dates right back to when it was part of England and pre William the conqueror. The split into East, mid and west is more recent but no idea when.

rookiemere · 21/11/2020 10:54

Well one good thing about this is I'm certainly learning more about Edinburgh city boundaries than I ever knew before. Scot gov has helpfully put up maps on their site so we know where we are allowed to be in our "protection " level . DH is wondering about some sort of ultra run around the perimeter.

Mrsjayy · 21/11/2020 10:55

Oh I see well didn't know that I wonder if they were split to please clan chiefs?

RaraRachael · 21/11/2020 11:03

Re libraries - our school no longer has any. We used to have an infant and senior one but they both had to be transformed into classroom as we're bursting at the seams.

Our local library is operating a click and collect kind of system. So 2 weeks ago I ordered a book by an author I like, made an appointment to collect it, read 2 pages and realised I'd read it before. Then had to make another appointment to return the bloody thing! Grin

Today's graph for east Dunbartonshire which is in tier 4...

Ok so you can't form a support bubble.
However you are allowed to cross boundaries to have outdoor exercise in a park. So could you meeting in a park for exercise?

A bit more woolly is the MH argument, I met my DD as I or she was becoming stressed, depressed etc. How can anyone argue that's not reasonable?

The rules are pathetic and completely about control. I really do wait for the first person to fight it.

Dinnafashyersel · 21/11/2020 11:20

rogue I think some of the good people of ED may need reminding that all their doctor and nurse neighbours likely work in Glasgow at the QEUH. They drop their kids off at Glasgow Academy on the way to work and probably a good few are also in at the research labs / teaching med / nurse students at Glasgow Uni/Calie and UWS. They likely nip out from the hospital to Sainsbos at Braehead on their lunchbreak.

I live less than 10 miles from my Grannie's, where I spent most of my childhood. To get there I need to pass through 4 local authorities. They are all full of essential worker commuters.

rookie I was threatening to walk the boundary this morning too. I need veg for the tea though so that will likely double up as my fresh air and exercise jaunt. Grin Brew

No idea why Glasgow has all these "Shires" but we never talk about them. We just whinge about who is and isn't paying enough Council Tax. - Not like the great divide between Aberdeen and its Shires at all.

Dinnafashyersel · 21/11/2020 11:42

Meanwhile in the USA, they are contact tracing anyone who bought a turkey in excess of 10lb due to prima facie evidence they are about to hold an illegal Thanksgiving gathering (not fact checked this, but no less believable or bonkers than our current regs).

Possums4evr · 21/11/2020 11:48

I'm going to hide this thread now. I don't disagree that some of the regulations seem "bonkers" but remember that the reason other things needed to be tighter and more strict according to the SG was so we could keep hospitals, schools, care homes functioning. If I'm to be told that it is genuinely safe to be heading off to teach 120 teenagers on Monday alone then others need to play their part by enduring the tighter lock down - or accept that you won't, and then put up with the adjustments necessary to make schools safer. You don't want that either though do you?

Perihelion · 21/11/2020 11:57

East Dunbartonshire is sitting at 179 per 100K for the last 7 days, compared to Edinburgh which is 80 per100K.
I think it's possible that Fife could move up to level 4. It's numbers are increasing particularly in Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and Leven areas.
Drove from Edinburgh to Fife this morning and there was no difference in traffic over the bridge compared to last week.

user1487194234 · 21/11/2020 12:14

Lots more shops and businesses seem to be staying open this time
Popped into work to pick up some files this morning and the traffic and shops seemed to be the usual for a Saturday morning
I think when the rules are not logical people just won't follow them
And people have just had enough
Some people I know who were very compliant first time around are much less so now, even SNP supporters

Dinnafashyersel · 21/11/2020 12:17

Possums I could equally argue there is absolutely no point in me "doing my bit" because it makes no difference.

Whether I shop in Glasgow/Renf/Dunbartonshire/Lanarkshire is of no consequence because all the key services and those that staff them are intrinsically linked.

This is not about whether or not people follow general guidance on distancing / mixing etc. It is about an overt decision to section society into those who are allowed to travel freely and those who are not. (call yourself a freelance journalist or a politician and you can pretty much go anywhere and mix with anyone you like - probably why they seem so slow to challenge any of this).

Callisto1 · 21/11/2020 12:23

@Possums4evr I follow the rules I am aware about even if I think some are silly. The only one that is tricky is the 2 m apart if you bump into someone on the street. I would also accept changes to school if they would make the the teachers there feel safer.
But I do enjoy a good whinge and rant about stuff that seems crazy and annoying and I can no longer do it in person so I do it here. Most people I know abide by the rules more or less. Some to great trouble because it involves their informal childcare. We are all trying but let us complain! Grin

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 21/11/2020 12:29

Possum not sure how me stopping my walk after 4 minutes when I reach the council boundary will keep hospitals open when it's as quiet on the other side of the boundary and we don't stop to speak to anyone. Been doing this for 8 months already...

rookiemere · 21/11/2020 12:34

@Possums4evr I'm sorry you feel that way, but I'm sure it won't take you long to find some teacher focused threads more to your taste Grin.

I don't think anyone on this thread has advocated breaking the rules - now that we've clarified that I'm ok to go 0.25 miles beyond my city boundary to reach my nearest Nike rather than driving 10 miles to one that is within boundary.

However part of living in a democracy means we are able to question and challenge them. In any event the ones genuinely breaking them are not wringing their hands or getting a few mild laughs about the ridiculousness of the situation, they'll be the ones like someone we know who has an alcoholic relative - they say the constant stream of folk in and out the house has never stopped.

For all I like to discuss and challenge I wouldn't want NS or BJs job no matter how much you paid me. It's a tightrope with no pain free solution, and sometimes they get it resoundingly wrong. A bit of genuine humility in this situation would - I think - go a long way to softening some of the criticism.
