Anyone else with a Covid case in their school?

Have just been messaged today to say there is a case in my dc's school and that Test and Protect are contact tracing and the school is remaining open. No idea what year group the person is in but they seem to think there is no spread in the school.

Its a scary thought but not altogether surprising when there are 900odd kids mingling together all day.

Anyone else had this in their dc's school?

Assume this is a secondary school with the numbers?

Know of a local primary where they isolated one year group. It’s inevitable that there will be more cases in schools as we ride through this.

What area are you in?

dementedpixie · 02/09/2020 11:08

I'm in North Lanarkshire and yes its a secondary school. Just says the school has been deep cleaned and open as usual and contact tracing is taking place

Yes, just confirmed today. And all we're remote learning in Melbourne with only essential workers being able to use school.

I really can't see how it can not be a complete disaster with everyone going back to school in the UK when I think about how dd1 school in London would cope with social distancing in tiny classrooms and small school entry/exit gate.

Sturmundcalm · 02/09/2020 12:59

yep - couple of (unrelated) kids with positive tests at the start of the week. about 50 others contact traced but everyone else still due in. next nearest school has also had a positive result in the last day or two and similar approach - both secondaries.

DeadSouth · 02/09/2020 13:13

I’m in North Lanarkshire too and my partners son has admitted it’s just like normal chaos, everyone climbing over each other in the hallways and no distancing even in classrooms.

Just seems like madness for schools to be back with such little precautions. If it can spread off something you pick up in the supermarket it can spread off someone pressed against you the walk out of the classroom. Contact tracing can’t work if there’s no way to predict how many people or surfaces they touched.

fluffyugg · 02/09/2020 15:56

@DeadSouth I think you'll find that all surfaces in the school are being cleaned on a very regular basis. At the school I teach at the desks/chairs computers get cleaned at the end of every period for the next class coming in. All laptops/iPads cleaned after use too. A close contact is defined as someone you spend more than 15 minutes with under a 2m distance so passing in the corridors don't count. All wearing masks now anyway.

dementedpixie · 02/09/2020 15:59

Looks like its a different year group thats affected - S4. My 2 are S3 and S6 so unlikely to be a contact

No nothing in our school.

Kids are wearing masks in Corridors and social areas, using hand sanitiser in each class and wiping down desks each period. PE is outside where possible. No assemblies. Teachers are socially distancing from kids and I assume each other.

I think they are doing everything they reasonably can and I’m very grateful to the teachers and support staff who are giving my kids an education.

So what schools in Glasgow have got positive cases? Just been reported on news tonight - 2 schools apparently.

Missanneshirley · 02/09/2020 22:47

Hutchesons is one, but they are a split campus, not sure which one it is.
2 schools down here in Ayrshire have had cases.

Pootle40 · 02/09/2020 22:49

This will just be something we have to live with. When it comes to children's education I don't see what alternative there is to them going back whether they can SD or not.

Mistressiggi · 02/09/2020 22:50

My school is being kept clean and there's a lot of hand sanitising going on. But we are leaving the virus - assuming someone has it, which is thankfully not too likely where we are - in the air. We don't clean the air. Hopefully all classrooms are well ventilated, though I'm sure some aren't.

dementedpixie · 02/09/2020 22:59

My kids school hasn't been mentioned on the BBC yet but is in a Daily Record article. Do you think it will be in tomorrow's figures instead or are they not disclosing every school case?

Case in my children’s school, south Lanarkshire high school

ALLIS0N · 02/09/2020 23:41

I forgot to say that the classroom doors and all the windows are open. Don’t know if they will be able to do that in January ...

thereplycamefromanchorage · 03/09/2020 10:26

DC at secondary - we have also had notification of a child testing positive.

I guess this was always going to happen - it's how it's dealt with that's the important thing.

MeridaTheBold · 03/09/2020 12:19

There's a case in my DC's school. School open as usual. Pupils being contact traced. Lots of murmurs of discontent from staff and parents about how it's being managed, lack of information, etc.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2020 12:24

We've had no further info from school. Ds now off with a very sore throat.

OP posts:
MeridaTheBold · 03/09/2020 12:35

Are you going to get him tested @dementedpixie ?
Our DC was off last week with non-Covid illness ... although my friend has since sent me an article that lists additional Covid symptoms for DCs and he did have those.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2020 12:37

no as we've been told in Scotland not have a test for cold symptoms like snotty nose/sore throat

OP posts:
MeridaTheBold · 03/09/2020 12:42

I was confusing the cough advice with the sore throat advice Blush

demented ds brought the cold into our house over the weekend. My throat pain started early evening and I was up most of last night with razorblades in my throat which paracetmol, ibruprofen, strepsils, linctus just didn't touch. Still sore today, but definitely easing off a bit already, and nose still blocked up. Hopefully the really sore throat will pass soon for your ds too.
Groovee · 03/09/2020 14:19

Not had a case but a number of our pupils (primary) were awaiting tests last week due to high temps and coughs. There have been cases locally including a nursery child.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/09/2020 18:29

Kilmarnock academy sent message out today at 3pm to say they have a positive case and close contacts (those sitting close in class or friends) have been asked to isolate for 14 days.

Everyone else back in tomorrow. 1/2 the school is full of the cold after 2 weeks, so god knows how they'll prevent covid 🦠 spreading.

It is starting to feel scarey now it is closer!!!!! 😱
