Anyone else with a Covid case in their school?

Have just been messaged today to say there is a case in my dc's school and that Test and Protect are contact tracing and the school is remaining open. No idea what year group the person is in but they seem to think there is no spread in the school.

Its a scary thought but not altogether surprising when there are 900odd kids mingling together all day.

Anyone else had this in their dc's school?

I’ve told my S5 that he has to make sure that every piece of work he submits this year is his best, as he has no control over whether or not he sits the exams or even the prelims.

One of his classmates has just missed two weeks schools because a older sibling went Holiday and tested positive. If the other pupil Had tested positive then my child would also be self isolating.

That could happen the day before the Highers.

I’ve also told his that the school will be collecting LOTS of hard evidence of work done / grades. The government, SQA and Universities can’t have a repeat of last year and the grade inflation in certain schools / areas. They will need proof.

Good advice, Allison.

My daughters friend A in S5 (different school to my daughter) got a call from her school on Monday at 8am to say don't come in, a classmate B is displaying symptoms and says they were in close contact with A so stay off for 7 days.

Unsure why 7?

However classmate B has still not gone for a test, has put on social media they got offered one on Wednesday but was for 9am and they didn't want to get up that early! A has contacted B several times and B still hasn't been tested.

Looks like B just wanted some time off school but school then took it upon themselves to act as Test and Protect and instructed A and several others to stay off for a random 7 days.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should schools be doing this? Can they ask pupils to stay away even if a test hasn't been carried out?

Railingsohno · 12/09/2020 18:20

What are views on holidays abroad and whether or not schools should provide learning for pupils quarantining due to a holiday? UsforThem seem to think schools should provide. I feel that it’s nice if they do but they shouldn’t expect it as it’s their choice to go. I wonder his many will go away overseas at half term?

I also think you’d be mad to go abroad at the moment!!!

TwoCupsOfLemonTea · 12/09/2020 18:28

We have class bubbles so if we get a confirmed case we will just send the 'bubble' home for 14 days. For symptomatic children we aren't doing anything different (other than obvs sending that child home) until they get a a result.

I'm buggered as I cover all the NQT and PPA time so am in about 10 different bubbles!! ... no pressure not to catch it and get the whole school closed down then 😱

For each lesson I plan, I'm also having to have a contingency 'home learning' edition in my head as back up!

That must be so frustrating, we had a member of staff off all last week as they decided they didn't see why they should drive an hour for a test .. so ordered a home kit, with a total turnaround of a week!!

I work in a school and we've been told if we have to quarantine due to a holiday abroad then it will be unpaid.

So if parents choose to go abroad then I think that's their choice so school has no obligation to send home work. If it's due to being ill then I think the child needs to get well before thinking about education. If it's due to test and protect then we have systems in place for the pupils to access work.

We've got work on Teams anyway, for every year group, so pupils can access that regardless of why they're off. If a pupil contacted me direct who was in that position I'd direct them to teams and let them know exactly what they'd be missing and what to do. However, if I was being contacted by 10/15 pupils a day, I suppose I'd have to prioritise those who were off for reasons other than a family holiday. 🤷🏻‍♀️

KatySun · 12/09/2020 20:39

I personally would not drive an hour for a test either though Twocupsoflemontea - that is a two hour round trip when you are possibly infectious and maybe unwell. If you mean an hour round trip, then that still depends how well/unwell you are.

Lidlfix · 12/09/2020 20:39

Usforthem can think what they like, whilst inciting members to threaten the jobs and careers of teachers, give tips on fake hand sanitizers and encourage withholding information about travel plans but demanding school staff to makes their holiday schedules public. And they claim to want schools open. Hmm

All my resources are shared on online as I am aware that I might need to isolate, individual pupils might need to , whole classes might need to. But that's how I choose to work as I have some pupils with chronic conditions. That is not possible for all teachers, I am secondary and not a practical subject.

Which means pupils who require to quarantine will not be disadvantaged. It's unfortunate if quarantine regs change when you are mid break and powerless.

Choosing to go somewhere that quarantine applies might be due to family or financial circs , I wouldn't personally but I am not in those circumstances. I hope those families would be honest despite suggestions from u4t.

Before I taught I took my DDs out of school for holidays as they were lucky enough to have full attendance records. I didn't expect teachers to provide work for them. They were early primary. Wouldn't have done this when they were secondary especially exam years.

I am crossing everything I can get my 3 nights self catering in a low risk area of Scotland from a low risk area . And happy to share that with bamsRus (got that from Twitter) .

Railingsohno · 12/09/2020 21:03

@Lidlfix bamsurus- too funny! They started off with an admirable aim, to put children to the forefront. They’ve really lost their way now. I saw people yesterday calling head teachers Nazis - admin just ignored it. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I’m a teacher and similarly to you am pretty well set up to share out resources electronically if need be. I do resent having to do extra work (it’s already onerous enough to be teaching on a different platform, having to rework resources, mark electronically, be suddenly peripatetic etc..) for those who choose to go on holiday abroad and have to quarantine.

Of course if someone was very unwell we wouldn't expect them to do that. I'm talking about cases where people have a cough/temp/anosmia but are otherwise well (which has been the case)

I was very unwell at the start of lockdown (presumably with Covid) and couldn't have even travelled to my GP as I was that breathless and feverish.

I'm talking cases that would be in work otherwise.

Contact tracing (so presume positive cases) at Cowie Nursery and Strathyre Primary School.

ALLIS0N · 16/09/2020 18:19

@Lidlfix can I ask if you can recommend any online resources for H English persuasive essay? We are all now SI for 14 days due to a case in one of my kids classes so that’s one thing I can help my 5th year with.

It’s either that or The Telegram and Shooting Stars At least it’s not The Cone Gatherers. 🙄

Lidlfix · 16/09/2020 22:02

Of course. Send me your email address and I will send you my persuasive writing packs.

I have good stuff on "Shooting Stars" too . So dark but they write well in on it .

On my external hard drive at work but will send tomorrow.

ALLIS0N · 16/09/2020 22:16

That’s very kind , I’ve PMed you.

weepingwillow22 · 21/09/2020 16:58

Has anyone else had any school cases lately? Found out today there is a case in my son's primary in South London. There seems to be a lot of schools in the area with cases.

dementedpixie · 21/09/2020 17:11

We've not been notified of any since the one that caused me to start this thread which was 19 days ago.

We've had various kids marked on the register as 'isolating' but not sure if any have tested positive. (One said he had but it's entirely possible he was confused.) One member of staff tested positive but only his close contacts within the staff had to isolate.

Lidlfix · 21/09/2020 18:23

Just had notification that the contact tracers are DD4's school. In the week that DD3 moves into halls.

How long from notification that they're in till hearing? Letter just said if we didn't get another letter she wasn't a close contact.

When there was a case in DDs nursery they said we'd probably have heard from contact tracers BEFORE getting the generic letter, but certainly within the same day. I think it was the same within the school.

Lidlfix · 21/09/2020 19:51

Thanks Wait, that sounds practical. Hope there's not too many pupils and teachers off isolating. The letter said no evidence of transmission in the school but we won't know that for sure till the isolation is over.

Sturmundcalm · 21/09/2020 20:05

DS's school, the kids who were identified by the pupils themselves as being close contact were def the same day. I think some of the tracing via class seating plans, etc took a few hours more but were still mainly the same day just a bit later on (that was true for a friend's DD who barely knew the pupil with the positive test but sat near him).

JacobReesMogadishu · 21/09/2020 20:08

This happened to a friend at her dd's school. Was one kid in the year group, the next day another, the day after that 5 kids had it and the year group was sent home.

Numerous other kids in that year group are now symptomatic and waiting for test results. No idea if it's spread to other years yet.

Invisimamma · 21/09/2020 20:15

My P6 dc is home isolating for 14 days after a positive covid case in his year group.

Haven't heard if it's spread within the school yet. Hope not!

Home learning is being provided as the teacher of the isolated class is working at home. This isn't my dc class but his teacher is also positing work on Teams.
