Anyone else with a Covid case in their school?

Have just been messaged today to say there is a case in my dc's school and that Test and Protect are contact tracing and the school is remaining open. No idea what year group the person is in but they seem to think there is no spread in the school.

Its a scary thought but not altogether surprising when there are 900odd kids mingling together all day.

Anyone else had this in their dc's school?

I wonder do their teachers need to isolate? It is interesting/worrying what they'll think of as a close contact. Breathing in the air a positive case has breathed out is surely enough.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2020 19:25

suppose it depends whether the teacher has stayed 2m away from them at all times

Not my school but Balfron High is reporting having a positive case.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/09/2020 19:36

Letter to school sent out from phs. Nothing directly from school.

So if they're identified as a close contact they have to identify for 14 days, regardless of a test? So (dependent on age,) someone has to stay home with them, for 14 days? I always assumed we could shorten that isolation period with a negative test.
(Plus in Glasgow the entire household of a close contact has to isolate, if I've understood it correctly.)

dementedpixie · 03/09/2020 21:25

A negative test does not bring you out of isolation if you have no symptoms as it could be a false negative due to the 14 day incubation period. It only brings you out of isolation if you have symptoms and test negative

This is the email sent to parents who have dc who have to self isolate. One parent who has a dd in S2 received it said on local fb.

They have. I have now spoken to an actual doctor from public health who has told me when my daughter was in contact with the person who had tested positive. It is definitely at school.
He has also said that there is no guidance for other members of the household of the contact person and it is at your own discretion whether you isolate anyone else or not.
If symptoms develop then the contact person should be tested and if the test is positive then the whole household must isolate and more tracing will be carried out.
It can take 14 days for symptoms to show and you are only infectious 2 days before symptoms show.
So what that means for us is that contact daughter should be showing symptoms before anyone else is infectious.

Not sure what the last line means. Ds is in S5 so not his year, but still a worry sending him in tomorrow. wonder how many parents will keep their kids home and see what happens over the weekend.

@dementedpixie
It’s impossible to stay 2m from students. 2m is actually massive!!! Even if you don’t circulate helping them (I do) the pupils still walk into your space constantly. They are very unaware and it’s unsustainable to get them to distance. You’d spend all day saying if 🤷‍♀️ I’m pretty resigned to catching it if it gets into my school.

Linnet · 04/09/2020 00:45

Yes my dd’s school has/had a child off with Covid 19 and the close contacts have isolated and are now back at school. Not sure if the child with Covid is back at school yet. It didn’t affect my dd as she is in a different year group, it was a child in a lower year group that was affected.

How does Track and Trace operate - do they just phone you up? How do you know it's not just someone playing a prank? Do you get an official follow up letter?

Is there evidence that the virus cannot travel more than 2m? I know it reduces risk, but I'm sure that study done in a restaurant in China, lots of diners infected who were further apart than that. There are so many windows open in school which is good for fresh air but surely also blows it about. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/04/20/health/airflow-coronavirus-restaurants.amp.html

I am also really concerned about my dc potentially having to have multiple absences this year because of quarantine. Presumably this could happen - what about the kids in exam years who could miss weeks of school without being ill themselves.

I support the quarantine, but there has to be some kind of plan with regard to exams. Not much confidence in John Swinney with regard to this.

KatySun · 04/09/2020 09:24

hangingbasketofdoom I think it is about level of risk, not that there is no risk over 2m.

I don’t remember the percentages, but I remember reading that 1m reduced risk by x amount and 2m by y amount, but both were less than 100%.

Son is off today with a heavy cold which involves coughing and sneezing. Probably would have kept him off pre-covid with these symptoms to be honest, but yes, this is the way things will go all year.

Hangingbasketofdoom · 04/09/2020 09:50

Katysun if his cough is new and persistent, and usually dry I believe, he still needs a test or to isolate.

MeridaTheBold · 04/09/2020 10:07

YY although last week, the entire household didn't need to isolate but this week because of the new restrictions for Glasgow, East Ren and West Dun, the entire household has to isolate.
With the case in our school, NHS letters were sent out to the people being contact traced, plus they were called by the school. Then all parents were emailed to let them know about the case and to provide a copy of the NHS letter.
DC's best friend is off atm. We're waiting to see if they're going to need a test or if it just stays as cold symptoms.

KatySun · 04/09/2020 12:38

Hi hangingbasket thanks, yes, the cough is not at all dry and thankfully seems to have stopped with cough sweets. We have had covid already and it is a different cough. He is actually bouncing around quite fine now Hmm

KatySun · 04/09/2020 12:39

The Hmm is at him, not you, just to be clear.

Desperado24 · 04/09/2020 12:41

Every school will have "a case" or more. It just depends if the infected person/people have been tested or not.

MeridaTheBold · 04/09/2020 12:44

Yy true and since schools can't demand pupils be tested or to see test results, there will be some families sending their DCs in with Covid because they think it's just a cold, etc.

I was meaning more the loads of people who have it but show zero symptoms.
MeridaTheBold · 04/09/2020 12:53

yy an early Iceland study showed between 30%-50% were asymptomatic but I do think there will be others who are symptomatic but still sent to school.

ALLIS0N · 04/09/2020 13:57

The schools will send them home if they have obvious Covid signs. We’ve been told we have a very short window of time to collect them after a phone call.

And yes of course, all schools will have some kids off every single day because of possible symptoms, but most of then will test negative and be back to school in a few days.

Every parent and teacher knows that colds run rife when they ask go back to August . Or ear infections / conjunctivitis in nursery. It’s nothing new.

We have one child At our school off because his family members have tested positive ( older siblings brought it back from holiday in Croatia! ) . He Is negative but has to has to stay home for 14 regardless.

But none of his close contacts have to be tested / isolate because child himself is negative.

In the usual way of things, the young adults who actually went on holiday are not unwell with it. But they gave it to a parent who is 😟

Hotairoverthere · 06/09/2020 20:29

Had notification tonight that another pupil has tested positive in my sons school.

2 pupils 2 weeks ago.
1 staff member 2 weeks ago.

It’s going to be a nightmare Sad

MeridaTheBold · 06/09/2020 21:25

Yy 2 pupils in our DCs' school too and our DC has developed a cold and started running a temp. We'll need to get a test tomorrow.
I am so angry. We shielded for months. I didn't see my DM or siblings and now we're in this position.

Railingsohno · 06/09/2020 21:39

Are these primary or secondary?
