Do we know what percentage are left with long term issues? I’m seeing people bandying around 0.1% death rate. But is this right and what about long Covid? Still an unknown....

Arkadia · 08/09/2020 18:33

Re:dentists, I think they had been exposed to all sort of nasties since the dawn of ... The profession (including HIV-Aids and hepatitis). Why should Covid be so devastating is beyond me. For example, in Italy dentists worked throughout, while here we have absolutely no idea.

Scotslassie1 · 08/09/2020 19:10

Dentists are working though?! If yours isn't I suggest you get a new one. I had a crown fitted last week.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/09/2020 19:29

DH had thousands of pounds of dental treatment at the end of last year, so it's not like he's not attending regularly. He called a week or so ago as he's had on/off toothache for a few months due to a broken filling, he was told they could only pull it out (this would affect all the work he's just had done) or he should buy a kit in boots and sort it himself.

Arkadia · 08/09/2020 19:52

Same here.
Actually a bit better. I managed to get THEM to out the cement in now, but anything that requires drilling (like a crown which I do need) is a total no no. I don't think they even have the drill in place now.

Arkadia · 08/09/2020 19:54

@Scotslassie1, did you go private? I know another person who is a dentist, but works at the hospital and confirmed that tlno drilling is standard procedure now.

MrsAmaretto · 09/09/2020 08:04

Can they not just make house parties illegal? No gatherings of more than 20 folk and then the police could actually police it?

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/09/2020 08:52

Is it just me that's now imagining the police doing a Billy Connolly and wandering the streets of Glasgow listening for a party? Grin

However, making a law is a bad idea I think. Police have been given "temporary" powers. A law might not end up temporary.

MrsAmaretto · 09/09/2020 09:17

With some of the neighbours I've had in the past I'd welcome a house party ban from here to eternity Grin It would be amazing. Then we could raise some tax by saying you have to apply for/ buy a licence if you wanted to host a party large than so many folk. It would've eased my mums worries when I was a teenager Wink

SockYarn · 09/09/2020 10:04

The whole thing is so confusing and a total mess. I'm not allowed to have a friend over for a socially distanced coffee but it's still OK for the mobile hairdresser to visit. My cleaner is still allowed to come because she's working and not socialising.

We have been told "no visiting", but DH is still OK to take the kids and go to his parents in England as long as there are no more than 6 people in the house. Strictly speaking, because I'm in the contaminated area, I shouldn't be visiting my parents in another, non-contaminated area. But I can meet them in a pub, whether in their area or mine. Hmm

SockYarn · 09/09/2020 10:05

The problem is though @MrsAmaretto the people who are having house parties would ignore the rules, law, licenses, whatever. They would just carry on as they have been.

It's the law-abiding majority who will stick to the rules and laws and lose out.

Arkadia · 09/09/2020 10:25

@SockYarn, personally I don't buy this theory of large house parties as main drive of infections. There may be some of that, but if anything who is going to admit that was present at a large illegal gathering? Do they take names down when doing it? It seems to me just the latest culprit.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/09/2020 13:07

just found a link to this for stats if anyone looking for an alternative to travelling tabby - not explored too much yet but looks potentially interesting for statistics geeks:

MrsAmaretto · 09/09/2020 15:51

@sockyarn but precovid if you phoned the police cause your neighbours were having a massive party they got a wee talking to and if it happened every Friday night you have to get environmental health involved and/or go down the asbo route. It's a total nightmare. Unthoughtful neighbours and bams making rule abiding tenements/ streets hell is not a new thing it's just now it's spreading Covid too. I would have no problem making house parties of a certain size illegal forever, it's a public nuisance. Why do you need to have 30 folk over in a 2/3 bed house whether you are 18 or 65? Hire a hall.

Totally digressed from the topic - sorry!

waitforitwaitforit · 09/09/2020 20:02

It's not just large illegal 'raves' that are the problem - it's things like birthday parties, where there are 12 adults and 16 kids crammed into the one house (because it's raining!), or popping round to a friend's for a few drinks on Friday evening, then phoning another couple of folk, then the neighbours knock, and before you know it there are 17 people, who start off socially distancing but as time goes on that's given up on. It all seems harmless but it's potentially increasing transmission. Add to that the fact that quarantining seems virtually non existent so people are getting back from holiday and going round to visit family and I suppose that could be driving cases.

Hell of a coincidence that it coincides with the schools going back though. Wink

Arkadia · 10/09/2020 08:01

@waitforitwaitforit,
I have lived a very sheltered life as I don't think I have ever found myself in such a situation.
Said that, given that night clubs are shut, that could be a reason. Say they shut pubs, that could further drive the house parties.
This situation is not sustainable. You close one gap and another one opens. And the process will repeat at infinitum. In Aberdeen was pubs and restaurants. In Glasgow was parties. Elsewhere it will be nail salons or construction sites. Oh no, wait, it will clearly be university students.
We need a different approach and a different narrative.
Sample questions to ask;
why hasn't London seen a spike? Why are spikes so far in smaller places? What is being done to protect care homes? (Remember those?)
Given that, whichever way they want to spin it, hospital admissions are not growing, what are we talking about exactly?

iquitelikenormalityafterall · 10/09/2020 08:40

I was saying exactly this arkadia. You shut one thing and it drives people to act differently. They’ve also obviously lost control with testing, after schools went back it increased demand, and they are trying to place the blame with house-parties.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 10/09/2020 09:25

It is interesting that the places that took a real battering the first time round, like London or Inverclyde, don’t seem to be as badly affected now cases are rising again. That, coupled with recent studies showing herd immunity thresholds as low as 10-20%, makes me wonder if there just aren’t enough susceptible people left in those areas for it to really take off again. I guess only time will tell.

Arkadia · 10/09/2020 09:56

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us, that is the point more or less that Carl Heneghan made when interviewed by Andrew Neil (Spectators TV on YT).
Now I am really curious to see if at the three weekly review there will be the usual doom and gloom, followed by reopening of stuff, like soft plays and such like.
Ah, and as of today my library is AT LAST open again (click and collect only, a method that they have been employing for many years already), only after 2 months after the announcement.

"My" cubs are not reopening. We are hoping that the scouts will.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/09/2020 10:02

Mine have aged out of scouts now but I think local packs are reopening. Lots of outdoor stuff I think. I await news of the Social Distancing badge. 😁

Re dentists; I have been disappointed with dentists’ limited work throughout this pandemic.
I know other countries have continued with seeing patients throughout this difficult time. My dd’s boyfriend got a filling in Spain in June, they were doing routine fillings but he needed an emergency appointment as he wasn’t registered and was seen within a day. It would be interesting to see what PPE procedures they adopted and if there were any differences.
I hope it’s not an excuse for SNHS to push through only seeing nhs patients once a year instead of six monthly check ups. Dental health is so important and I have highest respect for them.

I have found some professionals within their jobs, not all of course, very resistant to adapt and work around health and safety in this pandemic and our ever changing situation. We are all doing our bit and our best but when things get hard we cannot just down tools and say it’s too hard. Imagine if we humans had done this throughout time; just accepted the fate of other diseases, no votes etc.

WouldBeGood · 10/09/2020 11:59

@Jodri I’ve noticed that’s it’s private businesses who’s livelihood depends on keeping going that have been innovative and keen to work and find ways to do so.

Jodri · 10/09/2020 12:11

@WouldBeGood, Yes I think you have a point. Perhaps I expect too much of public services and I need to review my expectations.
