Scottish Exam Results 2020

After hearing DD3's deep sigh and worried voice observe "this time in four weeks..." I feel it's acceptable to begin the 2020 thread.

Over the years Scotsnet regulars and visitors have given great support, advice and even (tales of blissfully unaware snoring DC) light hearted relief to each other over the years.

This year has been particularly fearful for us and our DC and I know how much I have appreciated results threads in previous years. As there are plenty of threads with political discussions and chances for posters to express concerns about what politicians/councils/ schools/ teachers are or aren't doing, can I gently ask that we keep this to topic?

I have DD3 waiting on 1 AH and 2 Highers for a conditional offer and DD4 waiting on 5 Highers - results depending she'd like to apply for Law for the end of S6.

I was a rarity in the late 80s going from Glasgow to "down south". My mum worked at Glasgow Uni, a secretary, and no way would I go there! Unfortunately never made it back. Dd now going to Edinburgh... dd2 fancies Glasgow... so may be worth it if they'll all move home and I can follow.

Indeed. 40 (ShockShockShock) years ago, I was also one of the only ones from my year to go away to Uni (St Andrews) - although I was also one of the few who went from 5th year as well. The Dux went to Oxbridge after 6th year and the rest all went to Glasgow/Strathclyde after 6th year Shock

Ds was encouraged to go away as (imho Wink) it's a good stepping stone to independence. But there again, my own parents encouraged me to go away, so for me it was "normal". (But my parents were not originally Scottish - we only arrived here when I was 3). Dh was traditionally West Coast Scottish and went to Glasgow - but there again, he was a 1st generation Uni attender (and the only one of the 5 siblings who went to Uni), so he was also keen to encourage ds to go elsewhere as he wanted to broaden ds' horizons.

As it happened, he only went to the Aberdeen Open Day under duress with encouragement from me and it was the only one I accompanied him to, as none of his friends were considering it (I took him to St Andrews with a friend but was made to bugger off fine by me as I could re visit old haunts Wink - until they wanted me around to pay for lunch Grin). But once he was there, he loved the feel of the place and the description of the course, so was happy to make it his first choice after Edinburgh rejected him and he ended up with an Unconditional.

He did have an old friend (from childminder days and his mum also became a friend) who was effectively bribed to stay in Glasgow: "you can stay at home in Glasgow and then in 2nd year we'll pay your rent if you want to move out if you go away from home you're on your own, with minimum student loan" HmmShock

As an aside, after Uni I got a job down South but only moved back to Scotland after 10 years because I'd met to become dh ShockGrin (in Miami, but that's a whole other story Shock)

I remember your love for St Andrews. When I go to visit DD in Dundee it’s one of our favourite day trips - I’ll be there next week 😀

Same here. I can only think of one person in my year who went anywhere outside Glasgow. Just didn't occur to me that you would go anywhere else and that was in the days of generous grants. My Dsis went away but missed Glasgow and came back for her postgraduate degrees.

DD went to a school 25 miles outside Glasgow which isn't well connected public transport wise. Glasgow is still the most popular but they have someone going to every uni in Scotland except StA. No-one going South.

sainsburyshopper · 15/08/2020 15:04

When I went to Glasgow 32 years ago, (180 miles from home!) there were 80 percent home students. It never occured to me that you "didn't go away to university" although many from my school went to the nearest one (Aberdeen!) My grades wouldn't give me a place at Aberdeen but they gave me a place at Glasgow, nowadays that would be the other way around! I now have a dc who after illness just before taking up a uni place away from home was unable to go and had to have a significant change of plan and is now staying at home.

Wbeezer · 15/08/2020 15:57

Yay, letter from DS3s school today saying his D for history has been upgraded to a C.

ALLIS0N · 15/08/2020 21:33

That’s great @Wbeezer

PenguinsOnParade · 15/08/2020 23:17

Posted back on results day then lost the thread. Found out that DD's no award in Computing should have been a C. She was in this week to sign her leaver's form and didn't ask about any of the other subjects though, it was just because the Computing teacher saw her and wanted to let her know.

She doesn't seem to care because she got the two Cs she needed for her HND offer. Her Maths was a D so it would be good if that one became a pass too as the degree she was wanting to go into afterwards apparently wants Higher Maths as well as the HND but she's ok with redoing that later if she has to apparently.

ClerkMaxwell · 17/08/2020 13:00

Good to see upgrades coming in particularly upgrades to Cs as the downgrade to D is really unfair.

DD very pissed off that the school predicted her a B in maths despite all 3 tracking reports showing working grade as A and prelim/class tests being low As. Not sure why they didn't give her the benefit of the doubt or get her to do a quick past paper on the last day of term as they did for some others. However nothing in the big scheme of things. I've said to her to take a maths module at uni so that will supercede the SQA level wise one if she is so bothered.

prettybird · 17/08/2020 13:02

That's good advice Clerk Smile

SockYarn · 17/08/2020 16:38

School were in touch at the end of last week to say they'd be contacting all students whose marks had been downgraded from school predictions. Didn't think it would affect DS as he had AAAAB and felt the B was fair.

But email just came through - they had predicted A for the subject he got B in. He seems vert nonplussed by the whole thing.

Friends with children at private schools were told what school had predicted before the end of summer term - we didn't get anything from school.

ClerkMaxwell · 17/08/2020 16:55

@SockYarn that's great news. Your DS sounds like one of mine. Wish DD was so laid back. She's fired off an email to see what evidence they based their estimates on i.e. why they thought she was going backwards. I bet they are glad she has left.

DDs school didn't release their predictions until today and only because DD asked but she had 3 tracking reports over the year including one issued on the Friday school closed in March.

SockYarn · 17/08/2020 17:05

One of the private schools in Glasgow definitely told all parents - asking for trouble if you ask me. Or perhaps they felt under pressure to justify their fees.

I think DS isn't that bothered because the upgrade is in a subject he's not planning on taking any further.
