Scottish Exam Results 2020

Lidlfix · 07/07/2020 15:12

After hearing DD3's deep sigh and worried voice observe "this time in four weeks..." I feel it's acceptable to begin the 2020 thread.

Over the years Scotsnet regulars and visitors have given great support, advice and even (tales of blissfully unaware snoring DC) light hearted relief to each other over the years.

This year has been particularly fearful for us and our DC and I know how much I have appreciated results threads in previous years. As there are plenty of threads with political discussions and chances for posters to express concerns about what politicians/councils/ schools/ teachers are or aren't doing, can I gently ask that we keep this to topic?

I have DD3 waiting on 1 AH and 2 Highers for a conditional offer and DD4 waiting on 5 Highers - results depending she'd like to apply for Law for the end of S6.

Just listening to Swinney now. His decision to allow downgraded teacher awards to stand actually made me cry. There's more but that will mean so much to so many. Well done Scotland!

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 15:26

What a complete and utter shitshow clusterfuck.

First the blended learning backtracking and barefaced lying that it was only ever a contingency. Now another U-turn on the exam results.

How is Swinney still Deputy First Minister and still in charge of education? He HAS to go.

What a mess.

TokyoSushi · 11/08/2020 15:26

I have absolutely no skin in this game (2 x Primary DC in England) but incredible scenes in Scotland. I've been following your thread and really hope that all of your DC have the grades that they deserve, well done Scotland!

-Goodness knows what will happen here on Thursday-

TokyoSushi · 11/08/2020 15:27

But yes, how on Earth did this happen in the first place?!

britINscotland · 11/08/2020 15:32

wow

just wow

he needs to go

it's clear that the SNP will do anything to keep their votes next year (will it be enough??). Second education U Turn this summer.

The SQA will be seething. Teachers (and students) won't forget.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/08/2020 15:32

I have no skin in the game either and the decision taken today is really the only one possible but it's actually still not right or fair, what would have been fair is to properly assess everyone.

However, I'm really glad for all those that now have what they deserve and hope that all the clearing and confirmations etc done via UCAS can be undone - i;m sure unis and ucas are delighted with all the extra work.

Willowkins · 11/08/2020 15:34

I have 2 DCs getting GCSE level results in England. I absolutely have skin in this game because whatever happens in Scotland will have to be considered here. I'll be interested to hear what Scottish Conservatives have been ordered to say.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 15:35

He won't go. He's protected by Ms Sturgeon, and there is no dissent allowed within the SNP. He will bumble on in his incompetence. Wait until Ruth Davidson gets her teeth into him though, that should be a fun watch.

let's just hope that all those families who were hugely disappointed last Tuesday remember that feeling and how badly they were failed when it comes to next year's elections.

Sexnotgender · 11/08/2020 15:35

Wow, what a disaster but at least they owned it.

Surely NS signed this disaster off?

Will they increase the number of university places next year as well?? It would make sense to have an increase as there will be a bulge next year based on the increase higher pass rate this year.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 15:43

The Unis might just increase their requirements.

A course asking for AABB this year will be looking for AAAB or AAAA. This will directly affect us as DS is starting S6 tomorrow and will be applying for courses to start autumn 2021.

britINscotland · 11/08/2020 15:43

stop saying "well done Scotland". It was done for votes not because Scotland is better than anywhere else or the SNP are better than any other party.

What's the plan for next year's exams if there are other lockdowns?

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/08/2020 15:45

So many of the faithful going on about how they apologised and how wonderful they are because of it . Yes people make mistakes and it's good to apologise but this could so easily have been avoided and there must have been someone that had brains enough to say "oh wait..." honestly it wasn't hard to foresee the gigantic clusterfuck looming.

Plus, it's only one of many fuck ups so how long does sorry cut it?

aibuquestions · 11/08/2020 15:45

GCSE over here! Any idea on if we'll follow suit?

britINscotland · 11/08/2020 15:45

That's a very good point about university entry requirements going up.

DD is not in an exam year yet, thank goodness.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 15:47

Also A-level results day in England/Wales/N Ireland is THIS THURSDAY.

They are not going to be able to reconsider and get new certificates out to all those thousands of kids by then.

britINscotland · 11/08/2020 15:47

also what a fucking waste of taxpayers money on a grading system that ended up getting abandoned

Dinnafashyersel · 11/08/2020 15:48

celtie that is exactly the point I was making earlier. The extra places are needed for next year rather than this year as iirc upwards of 75% of students go to Uni after 6th year rather than 5th and most offers are based on 5th year Highers.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 15:48

What's the plan for next year's exams if there are other lockdowns?

@britINscotland who knows - but my DD starting S4 has been told that she needs to be giving 100% to every class test and every piece of homework just in case.

SockYarn · 11/08/2020 15:50

And he just said the SQA were an "independent body".

Aye right.

Persephonecall · 11/08/2020 15:50

I no longer live in Scotland and have never been an SNP supporter. However I sat in tears watching the statement because this will make such a huge positive difference to some children I know and love. We await English results this week and next and know that such a U turn is unlikely from our government. I commend the secretary and first minister for their actions in this. From what I know of the Scottish uni quotas, this may simply mean that numbers of international students absent this coming year will be filled by Scottish students, which may be no bad thing.

Lidlfix · 11/08/2020 15:50

I can only focus on my extreme relief for my DDs and pupils today. The other issues this raised I will think about after a massive hug when I get home Gin

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 11/08/2020 15:51

re uni entries, obviously they will need to do a deal with the unis to fund extra places, probably at more than the current £1980 or whatever, unis will be happy enough as they will have lost some bigger paying students.

As for those with higher grades this year who'd be looking to start next year, I think it might be a case of more conditional offers based on 6th year actual exam results (assuming they happen) rather than unconditionals being offered on the basis of this years results or officially increasing the grade requirements.

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/08/2020 15:53

I wonder how long it will take to filter through UCAS Lidl and what happens about those who took lower offers or something else via clearing - interesting times but really glad for those pupils treated unfairly who now have what they deserve.
