(This probably will get moved to the CV topic but thought I'd start one in Scotsnet anyway).

Does anyone have info as to where the Scottish cases are and whether these are 'community gained' or direct exposure from a Cat 1/2 place.

Any thoughts on the impact for our youngsters due to sit SQA exams next month?

My DS is in his highers year. 2 emails from school last week suggesting self isolation for kids returning from Italian holidays in half term but quiet since then.

@ofwarren you look like you have all the relevant info, apologies I haven't scrolled back to find your source.

Do you know the current status regarding the Scottish cases?

I only know what’s been mentioned on the news, but I’ll join your thread.

I think they said this morning there are cases in the Forth Valley, Grampian and greater Glasgow regions, and that the newer cases are all people linked to the previous cases.

LizzieMacQueen · 05/03/2020 10:56

Hi @64sNewName Where are you finding that information?

I keep looking for emails from school but, apart from last week, nothing.

Feels as if the official message is Keep Calm and Carry On - with a side order of Wash Your Hands.

That is the official information.

Schools are giving updates as they know more - but they are not in position to know more than the official info.

Forth valley
Grampian
Tayside
Glasgow

LizzieMacQueen · 05/03/2020 11:15

Thanks. Forth Valley. Where exactly does that cover?

OP posts:
Etcni · 05/03/2020 11:25

Falkirk, Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Alloa, Dunblane sort of way for Forth Valley but the health board covers the area up to Crianlarich and Tyndrum. Forth Valley Royal is near Larbert so if they're hospitalised in the area I'd say it's there.

Thanks both, that's my area. Will see what I can find on local news.

What information are you looking for? There won't be more info than that.

WeAllHaveWings · 05/03/2020 13:05

ds is sitting exams and it has crossed my mind what will happen if this gets out of control before or during exams. No one knows how this will develop and when so no point in over analysing/planning. You will be given information if/when appropriate.

We had a wee flurry of panic yesterday when FB was full of a local person being tested and sheltered housing on lock down, a case was then confirmed postive in Ayrshire and the papers put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5. The local case hasn't has been tested but is waiting for results so the confirmed Ayrshire case must be elsewhere.

The message really is keep calm and carry on for now.

PineappleDanish · 05/03/2020 14:28

I have a DS doing Highers too and it's definitely a worry. I am trying not to read the press and watch the news as the scaremongering bothers me. It's fuelling the panic buying which I saw at first hand yesterday.

cdtaylornats · 05/03/2020 14:39

Testing centres at Crosshouse in Ayrshire and in Edinburgh and Glasgow. If you go to be tested you just have to hope you don't catch something worse.

Corneliawildthing · 05/03/2020 17:58

Allegedly according to FB it's in the town where I live in Grampian. However the local residents never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

So many scenarios could play out and impact the exams:
Getting the virus and becoming seriously ill before exams
Getting the virus, being mildly ill and still able to revise but quarantined and unable to attend lessons
Getting the virus and not being able to take exam(s) on the day
Going on holiday in Easter, becoming part of a mass quarantine abroad or an enforced quarantine on your return as was the case for those sent to The Wirral
Not getting the virus but having a close family member diagnosed...

I’m sure we could think of more but the potential for impact is huge. My DD is only doing their Nat 5s and is just getting on with it. If the school closed they could revise at home but if the school was still closed when they were supposed to be sitting the exam that’s another matter. Sympathies to those of you with kids doing Highers as that obviously has more hanging on it.

It’s a very frustrating waiting game. I’m trying not to worry too much because it won’t achieve anything. I’m just hoping the worst case projections are just that - worst case and not likely to come to pass.

I have DS2 up at Uni in Aberdeen, DS1 traveling back and forward from Glasgow on the train and we are in Forth Valley. Classes finish in 3 weeks and then DS2 has a week with exams at the end of April. Only first year so I guess not crucial really. I just hope he doesn't end up quarantined in Aberdeen for a long period. DS1 doesn't know if he has any exams yet - he's 2nd year so again not that crucial.

I'm sure they will need to make allowances for DC sitting exams at school.

At work, we've not to travel between different office locations and events have been cancelled. There are more anti bac things round the office and extra cleaners in doing door handles and banisters and lift buttons etc. One of the cleaners is in her 80s so in a high risk group - I think she should be on different duties to be honest. Probably shouldn't be working at all but she's been there about 70 years and is fit as a fiddle and sharp as a tack and doesn't want to retire. She mostly supervises and quality checks but I saw her wiping down doors yesterday.

Just a waiting game really.

Lidlfix · 06/03/2020 08:11

I have DD2 at uni but just Glasgow so although she lives away it's not too far. They have put up with lots of delays due to industrial action by lecturers already. DD1 doing her PGDE so if schools start to shut she might not get her mandatory class contact to qualify. DD3 doing Highers and AH for her conditional offers. DD4 doing 5 Highers and underperformed in Prelims so would not want them used.
Professionally I have worried seniors who are tormenting themselves with hypothetical situations. And best of all I run an overseas excursion which is not to a high risk area but who knows what changes will happen Confused
Not often I say this but I actually feel sorry for my head teacher. . He can only follow official guidance but parental pressure and the tone of correspondence, calls etc is severe.

Clangus00 · 06/03/2020 08:19

1 is from Kilmarnock. An old man in a nursing home just back from the Far East.

Aridane · 06/03/2020 08:36

Coronavirus thread for moving ?

WeAllHaveWings · 06/03/2020 13:39

@Clangus00 was the Kilmarnock case confirmed? Do you have a link?

there was some confusion where it was allegedly confirmed but Handover Scotland put out a statement the next day (Thursday) saying a man had been tested but results hadn't been received back yet. The confirmed Ayrshire case was elsewhere, the papers had initially reported incorrectly.

Clangus00 · 06/03/2020 13:58

Oh right @weAll hadn't seen that, I just took what I had seen as true.

bluehighlighter · 09/03/2020 01:59

Have a DD doing Nat 5s and she says they've nowhere near finished the coursework yet. So would be stuffed if had to stop school now and just revise at home.

SamSeabornforPresident · 10/03/2020 11:44

Unless there are exceptional circumstances they really should be finished the coursework by now. It's only 3/4 weeks till the exams start in real terms so that's not very well planned.

Lidlfix · 10/03/2020 12:13

Sam depends on how many Nat 5 they are allowed to take and when they pick options.I finished teaching my course last week and my pupils sit 7 if they sat 8 which they did in first year (before we realised that was madness as they didn't make choices until the end of S3) I'd be teaching right up to Easter. Not poor planning in those cases .

My DDs doing Highers aren't finished yet in most of their subjects either.

TheresMoreofUs · 10/03/2020 13:00

My kid’s state school seems to be one of the very few schools (judging by this board anyway) that does 8 subjects for Nat 5. They’re still learning new stuff in some subjects, but in most they’re in revision/assignment/portfolio mode.
