CV in Scotland

LizzieMacQueen · 05/03/2020 09:20

(This probably will get moved to the CV topic but thought I'd start one in Scotsnet anyway).

Does anyone have info as to where the Scottish cases are and whether these are 'community gained' or direct exposure from a Cat 1/2 place.

Any thoughts on the impact for our youngsters due to sit SQA exams next month?

My DS is in his highers year. 2 emails from school last week suggesting self isolation for kids returning from Italian holidays in half term but quiet since then.

It doesn't matter if it's fully over by May, the point is if they shut schools then that's less teacher contact time in prep for exams. For some kids it won't matter and for others it will matter greatly.

JKScot4 · 12/03/2020 22:10

Exam prep obsession is something I’ve only encountered on MN, it’s March if they’re not prepared now it’s unlikely they will be.

nibdedibble · 12/03/2020 22:13

Well, perhaps that's the reality but I'm not telling my kids that. Smile

dementedpixie · 12/03/2020 22:23

I dont think some of dd's subjects have covered the full syllabus yet so they are still getting new info out

WeAllHaveWings · 12/03/2020 22:28

We've just had an email from work, all Europe employees (including UK) where possible to WFH until further notice.

I have been totally calm about this up until the last day or two but now starting to get little niggles of worry as more and more people in our office have been sent home (due to recent travel, or very high risk health issues). I am glad i am not in a densely populated area and know I am very very lucky I have the option to WFH.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2020 23:13

We are expecting a similar announcement re work too. My current laptop may however be taken and re-purposed for staff that need one for customer contact type roles so I may lose my facility to work from home.

thecalialilly · 12/03/2020 23:29

@JKScot4 As a university lecturer, I can assure you that 'exam prep obsession' is VERY real (albeit, cramming is not recommended).

Unfortunately, the students have suffered this year due to strikes which have resulted in a loss of teaching time. Therefore, the majority of students could not possibly sit their final exams tomorrow as many have not even finished covering the course. Thankfully, our exam period begins at the start of May, by which point - despite numerous setbacks - they will be ready. You sound très encouraging! Wink

JKScot4 · 12/03/2020 23:37

@thecalialily
I’m referring to Highers/Nat 5, I’m fairly confident in the event of school closure of a few weeks, work can be done at home.
I’m on my 4th teenager, 2 older DC at uni and I would have been seriously concerned if as late as March they couldn’t be prepared for a 2 week absence from school & it would result in exam failure.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/03/2020 23:54

I'm more concerned really with the kids who would prefer to be in school or are better off in school due to their poor or abusive homes. At least at school they get fed, warm, contact with caring adults and washing facilities. Even in a poor but caring home they may have a parent who is going to struggle to feed them for extra weeks. Donations to food banks have fallen too.

Not everyone has resources to buy extra stuff or travel to multiple supermarkets for essentials either.

I don't know what the answer to it all is and I'm not the only one...

Minesabecks · 12/03/2020 23:55

The peak is expected in 3 weeks
I've heard this before, but the chap with BJ today talked of a peak after 10-14 weeks.

motherstongue · 13/03/2020 00:10

I work for a Funeral Director and I am dreading dealing with families where their loved one has died of Coronavirus. The implications for the family must be horrible. If they have been in contact with the deceased they will need to isolate so they won’t be able to receive support from extended family and friends as you would normally. They may not be able to have a Service as they need to isolate and gatherings of this sort might be banned. If there are shortages of staff due to the virus/school closures then there may be delays for Crematoriums or graves being dug. It’s all very sobering.

And I have a child in 4th year doing exams!!!

Do you know, it's annoying if this thread is moved as it is specific to one area, and in the correct section for that area. I'm guessing Irish people might like a discussion relating to their school closures, and Craicnet seems a better place than the CV topic as it excludes (or is more likely to) people for whom the thread is irrelevant. If someone wanted to start a thread about how CV impacts on pets, why should that not be in the pet section? Etc.

I was wondering if that's why @Wenx had tagged.

It's not like it's actually flooding the section, it's one thread and in the main discussing the situation as it pertains to Scotland. It is possible to not be interested in a topic and just ignore it. I wonder about the mentality of some people, did they not get enough love as and child and had to seek approval from a teacher instead?

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/03/2020 00:28

But that's the point of Scotsnet. So we can discuss things that technically could be in housing or legal or education or whatever but we want to discuss from a Scottish angle.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/03/2020 00:29

So, we are following forum rules.

HirplesWithHaggis · 13/03/2020 00:48

I didn't even twig until tonight that CV Scotland referred to the virus, I thought it was a thread about writing your curriculum vitae so didn't bother reading it... Blush

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/03/2020 00:51

Me too Hirples!

I agree with you! Just as the point of Chat is to chat. But with CV, you can’t just chat about it. MNHQ have decreed it must ALL be transferred to the CV board.

Lidlfix · 13/03/2020 06:39

But Scotsnet exists because some of our systems are different. Education further and compulsory, which has been a common concern on this thread, being one of them. This is looking at the issue through a local filter so as Wax said follows the rules.

If they move it, I hope they monitor for posts confused about exams in April and why we are not doing A Levels etc.

Personally, I am looking at a thread on CV in The Staffroom too as it looks on the topic through the filter of teaching and that needs its own place too -?unless it has been moved.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/03/2020 07:04

So you agree @wenx but still felt the need to point it out to MN HQ? So who are you exactly wenx and why is this your job?

And as pointed out repeatedly, Scotsnet is for people to talk about anything they fecking want to as it relates to Scotland. So basically for Scots, people in Scotland, people wanting to come to Scotland to live or on holiday etc. Which category do you fall into?

We are very inclusive really but occasionally get someone wandering in confused telling us about A levels etc.Should we just report them rather than politely say that they are welcome to chat but it's a different education system here?

The majority of posts here are about education, this is a different situation 're CV as our exams are held earlier than in rUN so are nearer the potential peak.

Jodri · 13/03/2020 07:17

In Austria schools have been closed (from Monday I think), but are open for parents to send their kids who they want supervised (don’t know what exactly that means, no teaching of curriculum?)

I had heard that there had been a suggestion of closing schools but having a skeleton staff allowing essential workers (nhs staff, police) to be able send their kids.

I have a dd2 in S6 needing a higher to meet conditional offer for university and they haven’t finished the course yet but project just written up. I would rather school was shut with the option that it be open for those pupils who need it, whether through needing school meal access to computers or their parents are essential workers. Most will have access to internet and computers at home so why cannot this be used to continue learning where possible and teachers with immunocompromised households or have other essential responsibilities can be at home.

I think we all need to pull together and just change our habits to help everyone in our community/lives and have the best possible outcome for all. I understand about allowing herd immunity and infection of as many as possible (whatever the outcome) but it sits a wee bit uncomfortable on my shoulders.

WeAllHaveWings · 13/03/2020 07:43

@Wenx are you the topic police? You appear to be regularly 'instructing'/'helping' MN to move threads (not just CV related ones). If you don't like this thread just hide it.

Are you even in Scotland?

Agree with others this thread is much more relevant to Scotland than another topic, it would just get lost in the CV topic. Please don't move.
