So results day is here and I knew it would happen but in just over 3 weeks Dd will be moving to Dundee.

Thought I would start a thread to get us through those moments that we as parents find hard.

Am thinking about the long, long summer break and wondering how easy is it to find summer only jobs as opposed to part time all year round?
My oldest stayed home for Uni and was able to adjust hours in line with his timetable every semester which was ideal. My middle child is off to St A’s in Sept and is hoping to pick up work in the summer to supplement her term time spending. She’s not had any part time work up to now though and still has one exam to go so apart from sounding out friends she hasn’t actually made any practical moves to find anything! I suppose the usual suspects are waitressing and retail but I suspect the larger supermarkets and retailers wouldn’t want to invest training someone for just a few weeks a year. She is great with younger ones and volunteers with nursery/primary age children at her school but would need to organise a disclosure certificate I presume to do any kind of paid work with children.
Have had a glance online this morning, and part time hours are so very very specific and nothing for summer only.
Wondered if anyone had any advice where to start?

Where are you based @HotGingerPudding2

My Dd is working for the council's additional needs summer camps. They did her pvg.

She also worked in a hotel prior to going to uni.

Ds works in his bowling club.

@HotGingerPudding2 ** DD has worked for a large national retail company since she was 17. When she went to Edinburgh she was able to transfer to a local store. Now back home for the summer and working at her home store again. Will transfer again in September. Quite a few of them transfer between stores and she knows other students working in other retailers that do the same

@HotGingerPudding2 just realised it was summer only jobs you were looking for Blush. Some of DDs friends got summer jobs in cafes and bakers

My middle one did April to September in McDs last year. I suspect he failed to mention at the interview that he was looking for summer only work.

Groovee* we are in the north east. A bit out in the sticks. Thanks to your suggestion I’ve looked on the local Council website but there doesn’t appear to be anything similar. I’ve only been able to find parent led schemes. Summer Camps seem to be of the Kings Camp type or School holiday clubs and I suspect she has left it a bit too late for this year. I do think she’d enjoy working with children a lot more than waitressing or working in a shop so she’ll have to be more a lot more on the ball next summer.
Thanks Rassy She’s going to St A’s so not that many high street shops to choose from I don’t think. The plan at the moment is for her to build up some funds in the summer and get a bit of work experience rather than think about term time work.
Hmmmn ClerkMaxwell that could be an option! Looking today, options seem thin on the ground!

Hotgingerpudding2 - when I was at St Andrews (a loooong time ago Blush and the Uni was much smaller) I used to get kind in the summer (silver service) waitressing via the Job Centre. I'd sat in friend's flats and pay them rent (stayed in halls during term time). A friend got a job being a chamber maid, iirc by going round the B&Bs and asking.

3rd year I was in the Scores, (1st year I'd worked in Drymen in a pub but lived in; 2nd year I worked in the Alps) and the following year in the Rusacks and again the summer I graduated. The Rusacks was also good for doing casual work during term time.

I was fortunate that the Scores were prepared to teach me silver service.
