So results day is here and I knew it would happen but in just over 3 weeks Dd will be moving to Dundee.

Thought I would start a thread to get us through those moments that we as parents find hard.

She's loving it. Though they were surprised she got conditions as she had the entry minimum.

Dd had conditions but met them easily.

Sturmundcalm · 17/10/2018 07:07

i heard that most of the law/medicine courses always give conditional entry even if you have the full requirements...

Aurea · 17/10/2018 13:14

Thanks Groovee

Hope everything goes well for your DN and DN.

wigglybeezer · 19/10/2018 10:24

DS has too much work to do to come home for a visit during reading week Sad. He has a tendency to be over conscientious and will read everything recommended rather than pick and choose, therefore he doesn't want to stray far from the library.
I can survive not seeing him ,obviously, but He does need to leave time for doing other stuff to develop his life skills etc. I'm probably worrying too much as usual!

prettybird · 20/10/2018 23:49

In shocking news WinkShock, ds spent this afternoon apparently enjoying an empty flat (the other 4 are all away home to Dundee, Edinburgh & Glasgow) and cleaning the kitchen Shock before he sat down to watch the rugby (laptop unplugged of course Wink) and WhatsApping with his dad (dh).

He told dh on WhatsApp that although his room is the untidiest he has a floordrobe at home Hmm, he is the cleanest and tidiest of his flat mates in the communal spaces Smile.

I'm expecting him to help more around the house when he comes home at Christmas Wink

Groovee · 21/10/2018 09:07

😂 @prettybird

Dd keeps sending me photos of her meals. How come she can't make that at home?

Wigglybeezer
Your son is at St Andrews, like mine? My son has 23 hours contact time a week and 2 tests in past week, which go towards final grade, so I think they are working them hard. My son is coming home after Raisin Monday. I'm glad he's participating ( I think!) Had numerous emails from uni, warning them about their behaviour😬

wigglybeezer · 21/10/2018 20:06

DS1 isn't participating in Raisin weekend, he's had no practice drinking as he's 17 and also doesn't like the taste much, he's a stickler for rules and was worried about his friends getting into trouble buying him booze, I gently encouraged him to try and find some gentle " parents" but he preferred to just keep out of it. We visited him today and there were a few police out and about keeping an eye on rowdy behaviour and lots of drunk students traipsing about!
DS has handed two essays in and is working on his third, he's only coming home for one night in reading week as he needs access to the library.
He has been for coffee with a girl though, a new thing for him, I restrained myself from asking about it!

prettybird · 21/10/2018 21:54

I was only 17.5 when I experienced Raisin Weekend. I wasn't a stickler for the rules though Wink

I was the "gift" to my academic brothers: dressed up as a harem girl and then wrapped in a rug and they were supposed to carry me around Shock

There was no shaving foam in my time all those years ago Blush, just flour and eggs Shock Shaving foam started to make an appearance the following year.

weegiemum · 02/11/2018 14:15

Hope everyone is doing ok?

I'm off out this evening to dd1's first exhibition of the year - the GSA students union is now open again after the fire and its first event is the first year's photography exhibition! Dh will be at work so ds (16) is coming with me to push my wheelchair and try and get a free drink!

She finally seems to have settled in to her new flat (we'll not mention The 4am Lost Keys Incident!!) and is popping home for church on Sundays and maybe once else in the week for tea/something she's forgotten/mail/a bath/a lift to the supermarket/etc - even though she's moved out it's a very different sort of moved out than her moving to Dundee or something! However she seems a lot happier and our relationship is better than it's been for some months. She's enjoying her part time job a lot and the work at uni is fun at the moment.

How is everyone else doing?

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/11/2018 13:17

It's nice hearing how they are all doing :)

DS1 claims to have actually spoken to some people but he could be fibbing. He's finding the travel mostly fine but not going out at all socially (except with us). The work he is finding far too easy and is not anticipating having to sit any tests at all this year. He therefore thinks he will break up for Christmas at the end of November. Haven't talked him into getting a job either yet. Trying to be patient!

Superjaggy · 03/11/2018 16:45

Nice to hear how everyone is getting on! My DS is home from Aberdeen for the weekend, he's loving it. He's not overworked but is enjoying the debates he's having in his politics and psychology courses. Has spent all his money though so I suspect he's home to take advantage of Bank of Mum

Groovee · 03/11/2018 17:37

Good to hear how they are all doing. Dd is home for the weekend as Ds was 16 during the week.

She's doing well. My niece drove home today too so we met for coffee. Some eye openers in the convo 😂

prettybird · 12/11/2018 13:30

Fuck, just wrote a long post and it didn't post Angry

Dh and I went up to Aberdeen last weekend to watch ds play rugby and to take him out for some meals and a Lidl shop (£30 including a bottle of vodka)

Surprisingly difficult to get bookings at recommended restaurants - but had a good blow out meal at the Brig of Don restaurant beside the Lidl near Hillhead halls.

Ds went to his first ball on Friday night (the PIR subject one). Bought his own DJ outfit from the Aberdeen Slaters (only £65! Shock) and smart shoes from H&M - 1st clothes he has bought for himself (as opposed to with Mum and her purse Wink) (He was also wearing a jumper at the weekend that he'd had to honour and buy from Primark as he'd gone up with no jumpers Shock)

Dh got him to send us a photo (telling him that I wouldn't ask but would like one). He got a friend to take not one but three pictures at the Marriott all dressed up with his DJ and dickie now: looking very handsome, suave and sophisticated - and above all happy Smile

One proud - and happy - mum too Smile

Groovee · 12/11/2018 15:11

Awww bless.

Dd is having a complete nightmare. The washing machines aren't working! Can see me having to send dh up Friday morning to get her washing 😂

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/11/2018 21:08

Aww that's lovely pb. Ds1 reckons he has 3 weeks including today and that will be him finished up for Christmas!

prettybird · 12/11/2018 21:18

Ds has booked the train (using his Young Scot card Shock) down on the 14th. Xmas Smile

Groovee · 16/11/2018 05:28

Oh man, went to sleep early last night and at 10.30 my FaceTime went off. Dh and ds were still out and it was a hysterical Dd. Someone had bugs in their room and there was talk that they may need to move out to stay elsewhere while it was fumigated.

Now had an update that Dd has bleached her room and cleaned and hoovered it and it's passed the late night inspection. Other person has left completely and Dd referred to her as being a clart as her room had dirt dishes etc for weeks on end!

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 16/11/2018 08:06

Oh my! Someone clearly wasn't ready to leave home ..

Groovee · 16/11/2018 16:01

Or else lives in a very Skanky household!

Dd'shad her room sprayed today as a precaution.

OP posts:
haggisaggis · 20/11/2018 11:18

Ds mentioned early on that another flat in his block had bedbugs and they were moved out while they fumigated. Ds’s seems to be OK - although judging by photos I’ve seen of their kitchen I don’t think bugs could cope with the mess! ( he’s now using paper plates to save on washing up - what have I raised?!)

Sturmundcalm · 20/11/2018 17:53

paper plates is a step up from the thick kitchen roll used by one of DD's flat mates in the place of any kind of dish...

prettybird · 20/11/2018 19:35

Urgggg haggaggis and Sturmundcalm Shock

I think ds still uses china plates Wink - although he does complain that the rest of his flatmates are clarty bastards in the communal areas (although he says his own room is the untidiest, so god knows what it is like ShockShock).

The hallway was certainly extremely manky when we visited a couple of weeks ago: obviously not been mopped since they moved in and covered in junk mail Hmm. He hadn't wanted us to see the inside of the flat at all Hmm

When I suggested that as a minimum they would need to clean it before they moved out, he said the Uni has professional cleaners for after they move out, so why bother?! ShockShock I feel ashamed that I haven't brought him up with a better attitude Blush

Sturmundcalm · 20/11/2018 19:56

DD's communal areas get cleaned weekly by professional cleaners - who refused to do it the first week cause they had the flat in total chaos but appears to have been ok since. we visited ten days ago briefly cause DD was going to babysit DS for us going to an event and we weren't in her room but the kitchen/living room were ok.

apparently one of the boys in her flat has his own room IMMACULATE and only ever goes barefoot in his room then has slippers that he steps into as he comes out into the hall. i don't think DD is inspired though...

Groovee · 20/11/2018 20:54

Dd seems to be a lot calmer. She's been a bit freaked out about the news story of a girl in Dundee having a girl mirror everything on her instagram account though.

She's coming home for the weekend as another orthodontist appointment on Friday. Will be lovely to see her.
