So results day is here and I knew it would happen but in just over 3 weeks Dd will be moving to Dundee.

Thought I would start a thread to get us through those moments that we as parents find hard.

That was in the Daily Mail the other day as well!
Never realised Prince William was in halls in first year - I thought a property was rented for him? Hmm

wigglybeezer · 12/09/2018 16:11

I saw that, how on earth is the poor girl going to make proper friendships, although she might like the Polo society Hmm. I'd ask DS2 if he's come across her but he is immune to the lure of gossip ( he doesn't realise how important it is!) And I doubt she'll turn up at the board game club!
When I think about it ST Andrews is probably the only university where you could get away with doing this...

Groovee · 12/09/2018 16:17

@Rosemary46 you don't know Dd and her severe lack of direction. You put her on the right platform for a tram and she gets it the wrong way. Even though she was on the right platform. She got on the bus to Carnoustie last week 🤦🏻‍♀️.

It cost a first class stamp to send the railcard, as I sent it inside a card and it got the 20 hours later so she got it yesterday. I'm too tight for special delivery unless it's desperate.

I can't understand how that girl with servants will get on in life if she doesn't learn independence of some sort. Dd is ditzy but she's surviving.

Dd and her flatmates went out to dinner last night as there are a few birthdays this week. She seems to be enjoying her classes so far.

Iirc, he was in St Salvators (aka "Sallies") in his first year - I think that was where Catherine also stayed. Went into private accommodation in subsequent years.

Rosemary46 · 12/09/2018 17:22

Grin at the bus to Carnoustie. Please tell me she noticed before she got there and wandered round looking for the Dalhousie Building?

I’m glas shes enjoying classes so far. Do you know that their timetables are all online ? Just sayin....

timetable.dundee.ac.uk/Scientia/SWS/Dundee1819/default.aspx

Glad the railcard got there ok. I was scared in case the PO lost her license as it costs nearly 50 quid for a new one. And she needs it for ID of course so vv important Hmm

I think its quite sad about the student with 12 servants. She will miss out on so much of uni life and I guess will never have the chance to have so much freedom again.

OTOH I now i understand why I’m always so busy if it takes 12 people to look after one 18yo.

DS seems to have survived his first foray to Uni today. He met with his Adviser of studies along with about 60 other folk, picked up his matriculation card and attended an induction event where he met some people and got put into sub groups, all his group are boys (unsurprisingly!) and a lot of them are Glasgow people living at home so he didn't feel too out of place. He has an inauguration thing he is going down for tomorrow. His timetable is apparently light next week as there is no point doing lab time as they have nothing to work on yet. Mondays and Fridays seem to be fuller days and mid week he only has 1 or two things each day so he is going to love travelling down for an hour...

Groovee · 12/09/2018 17:48

Thankfully she did notice but man she drives me crazy. She's just FaceTimed to get curry cooking instructions. Just as I was trying to leave for brownies.

That's a bit annoying Wax, DS2s timetable is good this semester, starts at 9 but finished by lunchtime everyday, however next semester he had philosophy lectures that finish at 6, which means he'll miss the last bus home for the weekend ( and who can concentrate on philosophy by that time on a Friday!). DS sounded quite bouyant on the phone this pm, I am starting to unclench a bit.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/09/2018 18:26

I don't think he has anything starting before 10 so that's good and he's waiting to find out his lab allocation and that will determine his finish time most days. He also still has his elective subject to be added in. He'll just have to get on with it though as travelling is his choice. I've suggested he does any course work needed when he is down there and also that he joins the gym and could go for a swim or something.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/09/2018 18:29

Good that your DS2 is settling in well :)

prettybird · 12/09/2018 18:47

They've not changed the timetable much: 1st year Philosophy lectures were at 5pm 40 years ago Shock

(they were on at the same time as my second Russian lecture - so we used to walk back to our hall of residence together. I would get snippets of philosophical theory eg that it had been proven that we didn't exist - and later that it was ok, we did exist Confused)

Sturmundcalm · 12/09/2018 19:10

DD is partying like there's no tomorrow as far as i can tell - last night her flat hosted drinks (which got "messy"!), then she went clubbing till 3, then she got a taxi to her pal who is in halls at glasgow and stayed over along with 3 other extra folk... think the glasgow rooms must be MUCH bigger than the strathclyde ones - DD's is a bit like a prison cell in terms of size and overall appearance!

only "academic" update i've had is that she got free stuff, including a hoodie, when she went to her induction lecture on monday Wine

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/09/2018 19:44

DS has been living in shorts and t-shirts since April. He's occasionally changed into Jeans when we've been going out and he managed a shirt one evening. So, away to Glasgow today and he put jeans on but still stuck with just a t-shirt. I went in his room to see if there was anything for the washing to make up a load, thought I might give a hoody a freshen up and found 5 navy hoodies on the back of his door. Then I checked downstairs on the coat hooks and found another 3 navy hoodies...that's not counting what he may have in his drawers.

Groovee · 13/09/2018 16:33

Dd is trying to register at the dr. She's demanding her CHI number and I've realised that her birth certificates are missing, which means she's used them for something and not returned them 🤦🏻‍♀️ Told her to phone the current GP and ask and her response was "why can't you do it!" Erm because you are 18!

Then the district I registered her in is no longer as it closed down and moved. So she's whinging at me.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 13/09/2018 16:40

Arrrggghhh - frustrating much Groovee?

I have 2 Birth certificates for DSs, the original short one and I paid for the long ones long rant from my mum about them needing them to prove they aren't illegitimate Hmm . It seemed important to her and i wasn't up for arguing!. Long ones are locked in my filing cabinet, the short ones are easily accessible but they've been told to return them after use. They seem to be obeying so far....

MissConductUS · 13/09/2018 16:40

She's just FaceTimed to get curry cooking instructions.

DS went off to university two weeks ago and I've been a bit shattered. FaceTime has saved me. He can fake "I'm okay" with his voice, but not with his face. It's brilliant to be able to video chat with him on his phone.

wigglybeezer · 13/09/2018 19:16

Darn it, DS2 is home for the night and I meant to ask him to bring back his birth certificate to avoid it going astray, but I forgot! So far so good for DS, I asked him what his favourite thing so far has been ( apart from the food which he is enjoying) and he said meeting lots of new people was the best thing so far, which I didn't expect as it was never something he was very confident about. Pheww.

Groovee · 13/09/2018 20:53

I love FaceTime but Dd always catches me at the wrong times 😂.

Wax we'll be having strong words when she's back for a few hours tomorrow.

She made chicken and bacon cheesy pasta tonight. Now if her bro would make his own breakfast 😂

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 13/09/2018 20:56

We usually text before hand to set a FaceTime "appointment" as it were.

MissConductUS · 13/09/2018 21:03

By the way, the cheesy chicken bacon pasta dish sounds lovely. I think I've heard it mentioned on MN before. I'll have to ask Mr Google for a recipe.

DD was off school yesterday and made peanut butter cookies. Yum.

Groovee · 14/09/2018 21:13

Apparently it was macaroni cheese with crispy cooked bacon and cooked chicken.

Dd has been offered a job in the student union 😱 Yesterday when she was home for her hospital appointment she was adamant she didn't want to work in the union/a bar/hospitality. How things change.

OP posts:
Rosemary46 · 15/09/2018 07:02

Great news Groovvee

Cash and work experience , what’s not to like .

Lidlfix · 15/09/2018 08:03

Grovee working in the union isa great idea - seaming money,,not spending money but still seeing what's going on. My DD did those 5.00 am finished for longer that I'd thought she'd stick.

wigglybeezer · 15/09/2018 08:27

That's great, experience makes it so much easier to get vacation jobs too.
Anyone else sense a change in their offspring already? DS1 was home for a hospital appointment too and already seems more mature and socially confident, he must have been on hold living with us in our very small town....I fear we are going to seem extra dull in the holidays, sigh. He wasn't sure when he would next come home ! I thought he would be coming home for a rest regularly...DH is feeling a bit sad today because they usually do hobby stuff together at the weekend, I think DH and I need to get back into doing " date" ( cringe) type stuff together, will have to gather the energy from somewhere to get motivated...
