Brace Yourself for Indy Ref 2

Now given the EU referendum result, it's guaranteed. I can almost hear the sounds of Sturgeon celebrating from here.

So we have not only 2 years of protracted negotiations with UK and the EU to get through, we have an almost immediate resurrection of the Indy Ref calls and more years of divisive campaigning hell.

A very Edinburgh trait if ever I saw one, we do it particularly well!

I haven't lived in edinburgh since 1997 - just goes to show you can't hide it :o

Why am I not allowed to have worked hard to pay of our Mortgage - am I only allowed to have had the gifted to me by a mad elderly aunt? Only paid it of this month so still quite excited! Anyway, DH and I were both brought up in rough council estates as part of large working class families. We are extremely happy to have our own home and our more or less middle class children :o

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 22:45

Oh and we also got the mortgage approval through at the pre-Carney guaranteeing tiny interest rates level - it's a reasonable deal on he interest though! Catchment isn't fabulous although it's hard to get a real sense of these things, it's not a primary people rave about but not one people avoid afaik, so middling. It's hard to say isn't it?

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 22:47

Thats interesting statistically, in theory we can afford it with a few rate rises but when I include income and council tax rises as well it doesn't feel so great.

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 22:48

I bought my first flat in the early 80s with massive interest rates and a small salary - I ate a lot of plain pasta and sat in with a blanket on....a lot. :)

Where you thinking about munch?

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/07/2016 22:51

Ah there's been a few MN threads lately about it being offensive to say you paid off your mortgage/did well financially due to hard work cos that's insulting to people who worked hard but didn't earn much...they get quite heated! Twas tongue in cheek from me.

Can you give an idea of area Munch?

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 22:51

That's the thing - we don't have to buy this flat - in case of outing myself I'll say it's a fancy part of Edinburgh, not the Moray estate, and not quite prime Newtown but nice and I'm wishing we'd gone for something not quite so expensive...thanks for your opinions, appreciate them

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 22:53

In fact, I'm really wishing we'd stayed put in our too small flat which has sold after thinking it's fall through.

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 22:59

Ahh, DH works hard and doesn't earn much but he loves his job, society has decided to reward mine better but I'm not highly paid either (i'm not a higher rate tax payer) I don't like my job much but it has put a roof over our heads and food on the table and will hopefully allow us to put two kids through uni. we don't have fancy cars or holidays to bali or drink or smoke - Dh has changed career numerous times and has gone back to study twice, I've been redundant twice. And we had to move away from friends and family after the last time. I don't see what's wrong with having a decent work ethic. Some people are just jealous.

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 23:00

I will just name change later and say it's canonmills/inverleith area. We do really like the flat but just not confident that we can afford it for the entire length of the mortgage, I did have doubts before Brexit but more wobbly now prices definitely look to head south.

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 23:01

Munch, it's Edinburgh and not in a rough area, I'm sure it will be fine. If you are really not sure then go with your gut, pull out and find something cheaper and further out.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/07/2016 23:03

I'm gonna guess at either east end of New Town/Broughton, Comely Bank type way, or Trinity. I'd have guessed Morningside way but people practically sell their child to get in to those schools Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/07/2016 23:04

Ha ha, xposted - I'm pretty accurate then! Broughton catchment?

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 23:05

Couldn't get an offer accepted in morningside things move so fast there! Thanks I'm probably being unduly pessimistic - dh thinks so but both of us are financial idiots so thought worth takikg more advice

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 23:05

Yes Broughton exactly!!

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/07/2016 23:09

Had a feeling it would be there! Broughton basically suffers a wee bit in terms of popularity/folk raving about it because it's parked next to Stockbridge which is tiny and which every man and his dog seems to want to send their child to! So people are often talking about it rather than Broughton. But from what I know (I'm fairly local and hear a lot about the schools...) Broughton is pretty good. Catchment high school isn't so hot but it's a central enough area that the decent sized flats seems to sell well to families and to btl/investors for students and flatshares. I'd say it's a fairly safe option

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 23:16

Thanks statistically and wankers that's good to hear

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 23:21

That would be a lovely area to live with the botanics on your doorstep. i'd like to come back to edinburgh some day but i'm not sure we could afford it or that I am still equipped for the big city life :)

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/07/2016 23:27

Edinburgh's not a proper big city, it's like a bunch of little villages/towns stuck together!

Inverleith/Canonmills is lovely - Water of Leith walkway, King George V Park, easy access to all the North Edinburgh cycle path network, Botanic Gardens and Inverleith Park, Stockbridge a short stroll away, Cuckoo Bakery on Dundas Street for yummy cupcakes...

WankersHacksandThieves · 01/07/2016 23:29

Well my current city is like one of those little areas - i can drive across it in about 7 minutes flat :) I'm no longer used to the hustle and bustle.

MunchCrunch01 · 01/07/2016 23:33

I do love the area - must check out this cupcake bakery! Edinburgh is the only city I love, if we have to move somewhere busier it'll be countryside and a commute.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/07/2016 13:52

Edinburgh really is lovely. I think that one of the things that makes it lovely is people live in the city centre. There are even flats on Princes Street, not many it's true, but a few and every other street in the centre has loads of residential property. It's really quite amazing for example that most of the property around say the Usher Hall and the Lyceum theatre is residential.

WankersHacksandThieves · 02/07/2016 20:42

Just seen a FB post by Expats for Scottish Independence which was shared by someone I'm not allowed to delete... basically saying that since proportionally more Scots were killed and injured in WW1 than other nations we should support independence. Just how fucking low are these people going to sink?

MunchCrunch01 · 04/07/2016 10:27

it's loathsome, sure those expats will be flocking back to buy second homes in Scotland when the economy is in the doldrums for years after independence. Based on last time any remaining anti-independence voters will be accused of the full tapestry of vices! Rather than being people that love Scotland but think it's best off in the UK...

WankersHacksandThieves · 04/07/2016 18:50

I was so sickened and so was DH that we ended up messaging "friend" and ultimately deleted him and the other person I wasn't supposed to delete. I don't want that disgusting stuff coming into my house anymore. They should be ashamed of themselves.

rookiemere · 04/07/2016 19:10

We're being hung out to dry.

It looks very much as if the English politicians are waking up to the fact that Scotland costs money - money they could do with using to dig out of the very big hole they got into. So I predict indyref 2 with no assurances from EU, no trade negotiations with England and they'll still win anyway because of everyone Scottish being terribly brave and resourceful, but tired of oppression etc. etc. Sad. We just need to stay here long enough to get through DS's education which is another 10 years.
