Steange question for those at school in the 70s/80s

Hi all.

As title says - strange question I am hoping someone will have the answer to!

I was at junior school in Edinburgh from 1976-1983 n I recall vividly getting milk n a biscuit each day n therein lies my question. Did anyone receive n do u remember the biscuits?

They were square n caramel flavoured. No layer or filling etc, the actual biscuit was toffee/caramel flavour. My mum remembers them so u could obviously get them in shops at the time too, she thinks they were simply called caramel squares but when u google that u get millionaires shortbread type references.

These little squares were lush!! I live in England now tho always look for them in shops when home but to no avail. Has anyone a clue? Have I made the whole thing up? Would love to find them again if not!

Thank u x

They sound a bit stroopwafely but they are round.

Or were they more like the ones you get in restaurants with coffee?

goldglittershitter · 30/08/2015 21:02

Oh yes ballet thank u, very similar to those Lotus ones u get in cafes just a bit less rich n softer iirc?

Are you sure they weren't Malted Milks? With a little cow picture on?

CarlaJones · 30/08/2015 21:05

We were given malted milks at nursery.

mrstweefromtweesville · 30/08/2015 21:07

No biscuits, just milk. At primary in the 60s. dd at school in the 80s, just milk but you could opt out.

mrstweefromtweesville · 30/08/2015 21:08

That was in Lancashire, by the way. At the same school.

mrstweefromtweesville · 30/08/2015 21:08

So I'm sorry I've intruded on your Scots thing. My apologies.

goldglittershitter · 30/08/2015 21:10

Not malted milk, Carla , but thank u.

U r very welcome mrstwee . I have posted in Scotsnet as when I moved to England they didn't have them so am wondering if they were only a Scottish item.

No, sorry, should have said, East Dunbartonshire...

goldglittershitter · 30/08/2015 21:50

Oh, so it must have been up to schools' discretion maybe then? Am very glad we got biscuits! Grin .

I was at Primary school in Edinburgh from 1976 to 1983 as well but don't remember ever having a biscuit! I remember the milk coming in triangular cartons and getting a really narrow plastic straw to drink it through.

AgentProvocateur · 30/08/2015 22:00

This has reminded me of a burning question I have about my schooldays, but I'll start another thread.

goldglittershitter · 30/08/2015 22:02

I was Edinburgh too Muddle ! Not the greatest of areas either maybe it was the olden days way of making sure the kiddies without much got at least something to eat? N yes the milk exactly as u describe but also, biscuits hehe Smile .

I feel robbed now! Ha ha!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 30/08/2015 22:25

I wasn't at school in Scotland in the 80s, but your biscuits sound exactly like these (which you can buy in Lidl now): www.lotusbiscuits.co.uk/lotus-products/biscuits/

WhatsGoingOnEh · 30/08/2015 22:27

Oh! I just RTFT and saw you'd already mentioned those! Blush

Backs slowly out of thread, muttering something about an urgent engagement elsewhere

goldglittershitter · 30/08/2015 22:30

Haha Muddle u must have been at a posher school!

It's ok Whats , they r very similar. Might have to settle for those actually.

Triangle milk yes. Biscuits no! Renfrewshire 1980's.
Feeling very deprived and blaming Thatcher somehow

G1veMeStrength · 30/08/2015 22:41

We had biscuits in Notts but you had to pay 1 or 2p depending on whether it was a bourbon or a malted milk.

goldglittershitter · 30/08/2015 22:41

Starting to think I dreamt those delicious little squares now Summoning ..... N it was definitely Thatcher's fault, am sure!
