Looking for a house near to Stirling - no idea what areas to consider!

Any help very gratefully received.

We'd like 4 beds, large rooms if possible (or potential to knock rooms through, maybe extend).

Has to be semi-rural, no close neighbours, ideally a converted steading or similar.

Don't mind a bit of doing-up, but really don't want to rip things out that I hate but are seen as 'features' by estate agents (Aga, wood burning stoves, that sort of thing).

Ideally within 20 minutes or so of Stirling University.

I've checked Dunblane, Bridge of Allan, Auchterarder, Dollar - not sure where else I should look as I suspect the place I want maybe won't have an actual town name if that makes sense.

Thank you Smile.

I think I linked to that one upthread Bloody, OP says "No" Sad Grin

Hexiegone · 01/05/2015 14:53

Have you seen something?

No, I just remember liking the area.

Has this one been mentioned yet? Yetts o'Muckhart, half an hour away.

Oo, I could do something with this one Blush

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/05/2015 14:53

The added advantage of that Blair Drummond one is that you wouldn't be concerned about any noise your dog might make barking as you'd not hear it over the sound of fornicating lions.

FallingGoldfinch · 01/05/2015 15:01

I thought this would be like a shoe/dress thread where I could just go through millions of them and be really honest, but I'm starting to feel very guilty at how picky I'm being.

I'm sure some of those houses are brilliant, but I just don't see me living in any of them. We'd planned to move a couple of years ago and I remember there being so many to choose from then; we decided to stay put until now, and there is genuinely nothing that I would even go and view.

Thanks to everyone who has posted, but I think I'm a lost cause!

haha its the monkeys escaping to wreck the car that would bother me, the lions don't seem to move.

FallingGoldfinch · 01/05/2015 15:11

I could fix this internally - the outlook is perfect, but over budget:

Thing is if you do find something away at the arse end of nowhere in winter youcould get stuck in how would you get out to work gritters wont come up the north end of stirling can br cut off in winter if the snow freezes

Mrsjayy · 01/05/2015 15:39

Ive just looked at thatthornhill one WANT it

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/05/2015 16:11

Right then OP on the basis that if you do want to move you may have to compomise, what's top of the comprmise list?

Is it distance, neighbours, room size or what?

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/05/2015 16:13

Is this the one with the graveyard?

I think it looks great - that would be top of my list - ticks loads of your boxes.

BloodyDogHairs · 01/05/2015 16:15

If you like where you are just now, is there a particular reason why you need to move?

Mrsjayy · 01/05/2015 16:17

Derailing again but i picked up my keys to my new house today Grin

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/05/2015 16:22

BloodyDogHairs · 01/05/2015 16:30

congratulations on your new house, I hope the move goes smoothly Thanks Brew

Mrsjayy · 01/05/2015 16:40

Thank you not far just over the road probably wont move till june at the latest we are not in a chain so dh wants to remodel sigh off to see it again after dinner been a stressful day keys were at the agents in glasgow had a bit of a completion hoha but was sorted thats all that matters. I moved here with nothing now have 20 yrs of crap to chuck or moveeeek

FallingGoldfinch · 01/05/2015 16:45

Congratulations!

My compromise list is this I suppose:

I can't have close neighbours, that's an absolute deal breaker.
Commuting can go up to 30 minutes or so, especially if there's a train station.
Could go down to three bedrooms if I can convert attic or knock through/extend easily enough.
I'd rather it was nice on the outside and the work was internal than vice versa.
I would like big rooms (kitchen I have just now is about 30ft, and I'd miss that sort of size), but, again, if I can knock through/extend, that might be an option.
Budget is maybe flexible, but there are reasons I'd rather stay at the level I was after initially.
Primary school and high school needed, high school more than primary as I can drive for that.

(Can I add health care that isn't stuck in the dark ages? Probably not Sad . . . )

Yes, BloodyDogHairs there is a reason to move, not just a notion!

Do you still have something to sell Mrsjayy? In Stirling? Wink

OP posts:
FallingGoldfinch · 01/05/2015 16:51

Yes, OneMagnum, that is the one, but I looked again and it is a church hall, not a church, so I don't think there is a graveyard. There are neighbours though, live ones.

How exciting, Mrsjayy, and you've got the opportunity for a clearout. What could be better Grin

I'm starting to feel very guilty at how picky I'm being.

Don't. It's a big thing buying a house, it has to feel right. I have to say though, if you're not too far away, it's worth going to see some places even if you don't think they look right on paper, they can often be quite different in the flesh. And you never know what you might spot when you're on your travels Wink

haggisaggis · 01/05/2015 16:58

THere's this one near Crieff but over budget and also more like 30 mins commute. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-45157757.html

haggisaggis · 01/05/2015 17:02

Agree you should have a look at a few anyway. On paper I thought our current house would be too small - but when we went to see it we immediately fell in love with it as location more than made up for what it is lacking in size.

wigglybeezer · 01/05/2015 17:06

Now I think about it, everyone I know who has moved to my area, bar one person with a large budget who waited then got lucky, has compromised on house to be in the area and then pounced when the right house came on the market, quite a few private sales go on here ( rural end of hillfoots).

Mrsjayy · 01/05/2015 19:43

No its a flat with loads of neighbours you would hate it

OneMagnumisneverenough · 01/05/2015 20:07

went a bit lower down your budget and came across this:

www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/36577491?search_identifier=42e80e06ea196a613310e15f910b8b7b#kuRb6CxTMMbFPFBm.97

its 29 minutes away from uni, secluded - traditional from outside, 4 beds and looks like it has potential to expand if required and could be lovely inside.
