Looking for a house near to Stirling - no idea what areas to consider!

Any help very gratefully received.

We'd like 4 beds, large rooms if possible (or potential to knock rooms through, maybe extend).

Has to be semi-rural, no close neighbours, ideally a converted steading or similar.

Don't mind a bit of doing-up, but really don't want to rip things out that I hate but are seen as 'features' by estate agents (Aga, wood burning stoves, that sort of thing).

Ideally within 20 minutes or so of Stirling University.

I've checked Dunblane, Bridge of Allan, Auchterarder, Dollar - not sure where else I should look as I suspect the place I want maybe won't have an actual town name if that makes sense.

Thank you Smile.

Dollar is lovely, playgroup, nursery and primary all great. There are a few money / status types with children at Dollar Academy but most of them live outside Dollar and those that don 't are easily avoided if you don't have children at the Academy. It really isn't that cliquey., I have friends with children at all the different local schools. My kids have out of catchment places at Kinross High.

the area between Dollar and Kinross has more semi rural properties but your commute would go up to 30 to 40 mins.

I am from Dunblane and Dh is from B of A, High school is more middle class in Dunblane, B of A primary is nice. I have never taken to Auchterarder, although have family who live there and love it, I hate the A9 and the high school is a bit too small IMO.

It's the lack of neighbour requirement combined with short commute that may cause you trouble.

wigglybeezer · 29/04/2015 23:35

I forgot about Fintry, what school catchment is that? I forgot about Thornhill too, it's a nice spot and McLaren High is a good school.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 29/04/2015 23:40

Fintry would be Balfron High I would think.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 29/04/2015 23:42

in terms of academic performance it is 2nd in Stirling after Dunblane I think

OneMagnumisneverenough · 29/04/2015 23:52

Ooh another Thornhill one - this one looks really interesting!

Has Kinbuck been mentioned yet? What about the Crieff area? Your commute would be about 40 minutes to Stirling University though, I think.

FallingGoldfinch · 30/04/2015 09:15

Thanks so much for all of this - will get looking later Smile.

20 mins is the ideal commute, possibly up to 30 as DP has been doing so much longer for ages now. Him being able to get there quickly frees me up for things too, otherwise he tends to commit to really long days.

Would it help if I comment on the links to show what I do/don't like?

This is what I want - nice on outside, no neighbours, nothing to do to it; just too far away. Absolutely perfect, wouldn't even need to view it Sad.

I see what you mean, I visit Aberfeldy every now and then and always see houses I fancy But it is just a wee bit too far away from work.

I have seen new builds in that style in Comrie occasionally but that would be over your commute limit ( and dodgy in Winter).

wigglybeezer · 30/04/2015 10:14

I wouldn't worry too much about high schools, with a few exceptions all the schools in the area are good enough.

haggisaggis · 30/04/2015 10:24

FallingGoldfinch · 30/04/2015 11:12

That's the closet I've seen to what I want haggisaggis - bedrooms are small, but wonder if loft could be converted? Anyone know what planning department is like round there? I think there's an Aga lurking, but that can be disposed of!

FallingGoldfinch · 30/04/2015 11:13

Also, is there an ESPC/ASPC equivalent for Stirling? Thought TSPC would have some, but there's nothing (and website looks like they've given up to be honest).

OP posts:
haggisaggis · 30/04/2015 11:21

Why don't you want a wood burning stove? we used to get a lot of power cuts when we lived semi-rurally near Stirling and the stove was invaluable!

MrsRaegan · 30/04/2015 11:25

Tillicoultry? Fab transport links, good school etc.

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2015 11:30

Fintry children go to Balfron High there is a primary in fintry. Doune is nice and not far from the Uni thing is if you go really rural you can get stuck in winter

wigglybeezer · 30/04/2015 12:12

I think in Braco you can choose Dunblane or Auchterarder for high schools.
