Is this a community or not?

This might turn into a bit of a ramble and a bit of a rant. This is my first posting for a couple of months and my first lengthy spell surfing the site for almost as long. I'm puzzled at the way some of you seem to deal with trolls or perhaps I should say suspected trolls. I read many commercial and non-commercial newsgroups and I cannot think of a single unmoderated group and only one moderated group where trolls don't post. But what I don't see on these other sites is such a tiny sub group so grossly over-reacting to trolls. On Mumsnet the same few people seem to post their suspicions and then "run to teacher" (where teacher = Mumsnet HQ) again and again and again. But if you read other threads on Mumsnet people fairly overwhelmingly express negative views on these "troll hunters" but the hunters just go with their campaigning. Why not just accept the majority view on this matter?

Eg, other posters have explained clearly, calmly and well exactly what the dangers are in the "automatic suspicion about a first posting" reaction. Talk about falling on deaf ears . People might turn to Mumsnet in a moment of crisis only to get savaged by this tiny clique. For clique it is.

If you are not happy about a thread ignore it. The rest of us are big boys and girls well able to make our own decisions on veracity, participation or boycott or whatever. If one genuine poster runs away because of your antics or if one useful thread, even if started by a troll, gets terminated because of your obsession with trolls then the community as a whole is the loser. I find your actions both selfish and unwanted.

Ah the sweet smell of computers rebooting, multiple identities getting dusted off and the caldron overheating as the troll hunters lose the argument and their tempers at about the same time.

GypsyMoth · 10/11/2009 11:38

how sad you'd TRY to follow up all of one posters posts with that rubbish.....you wouldn't succeed anyway,hq would delete your posts for 'personal attacks' and then end up banning you.

so...next plan??

Am I the only one who doesn't really have a clue what's going on here?

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 10/11/2009 11:44

Are you honestly suggesting that we are incapable of making up our own minds about whether a poster is genuine or not?

I often read a thread and think "troll" so don't offer an opinion. Just as I often see threads where someone has d and disagree, or give the OP the benefit of the doubt.

Incredibly patronising.

And please, please, if you are using words in your name, do as I have done and insert capitals to distinguish the letters.

Silly man

Yawn - cant be bothered to read it all again as the OP seems to ramble and make no sense.

Watch out, the sock puppet will come on soon...

ABetaDad · 10/11/2009 11:46

I notice you only posted once before under this name. I feel you were given good advice then about your DD.

Are you a regular poster who has named changed? Why the post about Trolls? Do you feel you have been unfairly treated?

I was called troll when I first posted which I feel was mainly because I am a man and it was a bit upsetting - so I sort of agree with you. There is a small group of quite nasty thread police in some areas of MN and a few are self appointed troll hunters too.

Just ignore them. Lots of fair minded women (and a few men) on here and it is a good community to be part of. I have found it enormously helpful since I joined. It would be nice to see a few more Dads posting too.

Hope you stick around and post a bit more often.

I liked the bit when it got angry.

Goshitsaman · 10/11/2009 11:48

"Am I the only one who doesn't really have a clue what's going on here?"

There are a small number of people on Mumsnet who throw the word troll around far too often in the opinion of a larger group of Mumsnet users. Don't take my word for it, all the evidence is around for people to read.

I think what they are doing is harmful, they clearly don't. They resort to rudeness while I ....

Who cares about people shouting Troll? If I agree or am already suspicious then I stop posting otherwise I ignore the accusation.

You are worse than the troll hunter as you are a troll hunter's hunter.

Goshitsaman · 10/11/2009 11:53

"Are you honestly suggesting that we are incapable of making up our own minds about whether a poster is genuine or not?"

Again exactly the opposite of what I'm saying. The troll hunters do that by shouting troll, troll, troll from the proverbial rooftops.

So you actually support my view. That's nice.

OP posts:
YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 10/11/2009 11:57

No, I am stating that someone can shout Troll and I can happily ignore it.

Oh dear. You have no intention of even trying to have a rational discussion, you're just on a witch hunt.

Boring.

BitOfFun · 10/11/2009 11:57

I thought that, risible as Extended was, they were actually pretty loathsome in the way they copy and pasted their odd little tale of abandonment on genuine posters' bereavement support threads. It killed at least one stone dead. So I have no reservation in telling that particular troll when they've been rumbled, because they are actually rather nasty.

Flightattendant · 10/11/2009 11:57

this is all very stupid and infantile.

Bramshott · 10/11/2009 11:59

I'm going to stick my neck out here - I don't necessarily know the background to this particular argument, but as a general rule, I don't think that shouting "troll" as quickly as we sometimes seem to is at all helpful.

Yes obviously if you doubt the OP, and people are getting sucked in, offering help etc, then by all means share your suspicions.

Surely it's much, much worse to risk accusing someone reaching out for help of being a troll, than to spend time responding to a post which many not be true? If you're too busy, or suspicious, then don't respond, but also remember that many threads are very helpful to others who read them and may have a similar problem, whether or not the OP is genuine.

Goshit, if you have a problem with Reality/BoF/Anyfucker or whoever then you should just steer clear of where they post. I must say the 'Troll' shout is no different than any other post and if accused unfairly someone usually posts that. FWIW Extended and sister never seem to post at similar times and it is suspicious, to say the least.
