Do many couples attend routine medical and dental appointments together?

I have two sets of friends, both in female same sex marriages (which may not have any bearing), that attend all medical and dental appointments together. Including one of the couples goes into the dental appointment and sits next to her wife while she is in the chair having her teeth cleaned. I truly am not judging, it just never occurred to me to do that with my DH.

Do many couples do this?

Thanks.

How do they get time off work to attend their partner’s medical appointments?! I struggle to get time for my own or the kids’.

Zeborah · 05/10/2026 17:59

No because I'm not 7

My dh takes me everywhere but I don't drive, never have, never will.
He just waits in the car until I'm done but sometimes he will wait in the waiting room if we've also booked in the kids or just to get the baby out for a bit.
Nearest NHS dentist is a 30 minute drive away in the city, we live in a town.
Nearest gp is also a 15 minute drive away in the next town over..public transport isn't the best as we are rural so it would be hard to plan work around appointments, luckily dh is self employed so he can be on hand to give me a lift.
It may be hard for some people to comprehend but not everyone can drive. 😂

I don’t drive, never have, but the key is I live in a city and don’t need to ever rely on anyone else to get me somewhere - even my DH (who can drive but we don’t own a car)

I couldn’t live where you live and not be able to get myself around. Unless there is a medical reason you can’t drive?

But guessing you sit in the waiting room and don’t sit at the side watching your partner get their teeth checked? SO WEIRD

I did sit at the side with my husband, but it was a different situation in that I was his carer. When I had my teeth checked, he was usually in the waiting room.

It's difficult. Until I was retired, we'd have to book months ahead.

As usual there are the very strange people on the thread who say they are a “couple” and they like to spend time with each other, as if they have a far superior relationship to those of us who can manage a filling without Malcolm in his anorak getting in the way of the dentist’s drill.

🤣🤣🤣

That is totally different and the OP is clearly talking about people doing it through choice. Not being a carer.

purplecorkheart · 05/10/2026 18:03

I seen it a couple of times in a chiropodist clinic. Husband and wife arrived together. However one waits either in the waiting room or car. To be fair though this clinic is quit hard to get bookings with so the wife told me that she rang at the start of the year and just booked in for every eight weeks and said she may as well do it for her husband while she was on the phone. They also live a far distance away so it is logical to make one journey. They also pay separately.

Yes. I said in my post: "but it was a different situation".

I love dh very much, but I guess not, according to some, as I don’t sit fondly watching the plaque fly off his teeth at the dental hygienist…

Serious doctor’s appointments or accompanying someone who needs eg hearing support are very different from the eejits on here making a virtue of going into the actual dentist’s room with their spouse.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 05/10/2026 18:05

DH and I go to the dentist together for routine appointments, but one of us will see the hygienist while the other is in the dentist and vice versa. We wouldn’t go to the doctor’s or other medical appointment together unless it was potentially something very serious so the other would go for a bit of moral support.

WaneyEdge · 05/10/2026 18:05

I prefer if DH takes me to the dentist as parking is such a bloody nightmare! He can drop me off and then drive around for a bit. If I drive myself I have to leave myself an extra 20 minutes just to try and find a parking space. He doesn’t come in with me though, nor me him.

worriedwife201 · 05/10/2026 18:09

We are very much a package deal and if one of us wants the other it will happen. Dentist no worst they are going to do is pull a tooth but anything unknown medical yes we go together. Minor things like ear infection and the other is at work no we go alone but if it falls an off day we would likely take the other. Why do people want to be alone!

OrganicDecafEarlGrey · 05/10/2026 18:22

MeowDoku · 05/10/2026 17:23

We do the dentist together as we all need to go at the same interval (no major work needed just check ups really) and it means we tag team DS so he gets seen then one of us sits with him in the waiting room while the other goes in, then switch.
Not medical appointments though, although DH came with me when I was blue lighted in with an undiagnosed heart condition while ds was at school , but I actually thought I was going to die

It would be a bit strange if he hadn't gone with you!

I'm single but I would dearly love someone to go with me to appointments. I think it's very lovely when couples do everything together and I'm envious.

nuttymut · 05/10/2026 18:22

As a hygienist I find it very weird when couples in good health with full capacity come into the surgery together and yes as someone said upthread , it is a red flag . I also find it intimidating. Luckily my room is very small , so if a couple follow me into my room , my nurse suggests they sit in the waiting room .
As for those who are nervous , IME these patients get a huge boost in confidence when they attend solo.
And no my DH and I attend appointments solo.

Simonjt · 05/10/2026 18:31

I go to all of my husbands appointments, he has a physical disability so its unlikely he would have an appointment where he doesn’t need assistance. With the dentist we have a back to back appointment for all four of us twice a year for our check up.

My husband will come to my doctors appointmenta depending on what it is, so it varies with mine.

Stipendio · 05/10/2026 18:37

JaneJaneAnne · 05/10/2026 15:00

I would suggest that one of the couple has had bad experiences and either:

  1. Wants a chaperone that she trusts

or

  1. needs emotional support.

Either way, not your business.

My DH has certainly come to appointments that I was particularly worried about eg antenatal appointments.

Yes, but the op clearly says 'routine' appointments, not something that you are particularly worried about, which would be more understandable.

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 05/10/2026 14:56

That's just weird.

Very weird!

mambojambodothetango · 05/10/2026 18:43

The only health care appointments we have attended together (m/f) were pregnancy scans.

GolfingGoddess · 05/10/2026 18:45

We go to the dentist together and take the kids. We all get invited for a check up every 6-9 months, when I get the email I book for us all. Just one slot to work into diaries, one lot of petrol and parking, easy supervision of the children by the other parent during the appointment. But no we don’t go with each other to appointments that are only relevant to one of us and would only change that if it were something that could be serious and we wanted support.

Uberella · 05/10/2026 18:45

It depends on what it is;I recently had a tooth out and DH came with me to drive me home afterwards as I was abit woozy plus I’ve had some negative experiences at the dentist previously.

There’s been times we’ve accompanied each other to doctors appointments as the other has felt quite poorly and needed some practical support.

My DH came to the doctors with me when I found a lump in my breast and another time one in my neck as I was scared and needed moral support.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 05/10/2026 18:53

We might go at the same time but wouldn’t go in together.

My abusive ex would never ‘allow’ me to attend appointments alone. Now as a nurse I always consider this if I have a patient that always attends with their spouse.

theblame · 05/10/2026 18:59

I took my dad to my dentist appointment but it was a bit sly really.. he is petrified of the dentist and I was but am not now. Told him I was scared of a root canal and he came to sit with me. He hadn’t been in a dentist in 20 years. By the end of the appointment the dentist had done him a check up Grin and persuaded him into an Xray
my DP drove me to an eye appointment once where they said I wouldn’t be able to drive after and needed someone with me but that’s it

dreamingofgoodhair · 05/10/2026 19:03

only if we were going somewhere afterwards but he’d wait in the car.

CookingFatCat · 05/10/2026 19:06

It’s my ‘ me time’ so no way!! 😂
