I found out my husband visited an escort

I found out yesterday that my husband visited an escort earlier this year and I’m completely devastated.
We’ve been together a long time. As far as I knew we were happy.
I found messages on our shared iPad from February. He had contacted a woman through an escort site asking if she was available. She replied with a menu of services, all of which involved some form of sexual “relief”. He booked an hour, later messaged to say he was there, and she sent him instructions for getting into the building.
When I confronted him, he initially completely denied it. He said the messages couldn’t be his, he’d never been there and there must be some sort of mistake. Eventually, after a lot of questioning, he admitted he had gone and had a massage with a happy ending. He says it happened once, he has never done anything like it before and genuinely doesn’t know why he did it.
I asked him to leave yesterday and he went to a hotel last night. His apology was pretty rotten, basically that he was sorry he had disappointed me and let me down!? He asked what he could do, but I honestly feel he should be the one coming up with that, not expecting me to tell him. He hasn't been in touch since.

The other thing I’m really struggling with is how much the whole thing disgusts me. The fact that my husband went onto an escort site, chose someone, arranged to meet her and paid for a sexual service makes me feel physically sick. I can't get the messages or what happened out of my head.
This morning I noticed he had signed his iMessage account out of the shared iPad. I sent him a screenshot of that and he read it but didn’t respond.
I love him, which is what makes this so painful, but at the moment I can’t imagine ever trusting him again and I didn't think he would be capable of this. I also keep wondering if I really believe this was the only time.
Has anyone been through something similar? Did you stay or leave, and if you stayed, were you ever genuinely able to get past it and trust your partner again?

This is only the one time hes been caught. I bet hes used them before. He probably thinks - oh it was only a massage and a hand job, whats your problem? Cheatings cheating. Do you believe it was that or full sex? If it was a hand job this time, no doubt it would have escalated for the next. Then theres the paying for sex from a sex worker issue. Was that money out of the family pot? STIs possibly and him keeping quiet then having sex with you, so you could’ve caught god know whatever. Trust is gone now unfortunately

Oh grow up and read your first couple of posts.

That is why.

Another thread I’ve been on where you’ve waded in and then retreated with a half asses apology

I will join the others in just ignoring you

Do you think racist opinions are “valid” too? @OMGDidYouSayThat out of interest

I agree. I just don't like being called a liar when i'm not.

Keepgettingolder81 · 17/09/2026 11:15

Clearly, this is not the first time, I’m really sorry to say this.

Imonmyownhere · 17/09/2026 11:17

Stop derailing the thread and arguing, OP has had a grande thrown in and all you do is argue with each other.

OP hope you're okay, horrible thing to happen. I hope you have some RL friends or family to talk to.

Why are these men so fucking stupid. This is also how I found my ex had cheated, by looking through our shared device. I’m not the unfaithful type but if I was I wouldn’t be so thick as to exchange messages on a shared tablet.

This, this will be the tip of the iceberg I'm afraid. Stay strong Op, I'm going through a divorce now and trust me, you'll be ok.

@Busymorn so when i say all opinions are valid obviously anything even slightly illegal is going to be excluded.

EatingSky · 17/09/2026 14:06

Gross. Won’t be the first time. Men don’t just suddenly decide to use prostitutes in middle age having not done it habitually since pretty early on, in my experience. No coming back from this.

Complacency?

or perhaps on some level they want to be found out because they’re too spineless to actually end the marriage

Itsasecretnow · 17/09/2026 14:22

@NiftyKhakiPoet do you have any daughters?

I agree, complacency if they have been doing it for a while or, absolutely no idea of how technology works.

And some it will be because they’re too spineless and want to be find out because they want the marriage over but don’t have the balls to say so

NiftyKhakiPoet · 17/09/2026 15:15

Thank you again for all the replies. Everyone has been really constructive and I genuinely appreciate people taking the time to respond, as I don’t have anyone to discuss this with.
There seems to be a bit of a parallel discussion developing about the ethics of prostitution, women being free to choose sex work, trafficking and exploitation. I completely understand why that discussion has come up and all of those issues are valid, but it isn’t really what I came here for. I’m still trying to process what has happened.
A few people have asked about the messages. He had absolutely no idea his iMessages were appearing on this iPad and neither did I. For some reason only a sporadic selection seemed to be showing. There is no part of me that thinks he wanted to be caught.
People have also asked if I think there is more. Deep down, yes I do, which is shattering. He says this was the only time, but after initially denying what I had actually seen with my own eyes, I don’t think he will ever admit to anything more unless there is evidence in front of him. I know him well enough to know that.
I received a one-line message from him this morning asking how my father was, as he was in hospital yesterday having an operation, and that was it.
Yes, I have a daughter and I understand why people have asked me to think about this from the point of view of the woman involved and how I would feel if it were my daughter. I do understand the point being made and I’m disgusted. I’m completely devastated by what my husband has done and what it means for our lives.
I know now that there is no way back for me. It honestly feels like someone has died. Overnight I’ve lost the man I thought I knew and was with for 20 years and the life I thought we had together. And it isn’t just my life that changes because of this. There are other people we love whose lives are going to change too, and they don’t even know it yet.
A few days ago I thought I was in a happy, loving marriage. Now I’m trying to get my head around the fact that the person I trusted completely was capable of doing something I never imagined he would do.

You know what’s depressing? @Whatevers has children.

Imagine opening up to your parent about what’s been going on in your two decade long marriage - and this being their reaction?

Although my guess… @Whatevers kids will have sensibly gone NC at first chance
