My narcs are still young really and life has not shrank for them. I think they sound like they get worse with age as the supply drops. By which point I bet they will get more entitled but they haven’t helped so they bugger off.

With the benefit of hindsight, I would warn anyone with a dysfunctional family to be wary of what happens when the parent gets older and needs/wants support. My experience, and a lot of what I've read on here, is that the Golden Child expects to make all the decisions but they and the parent/s expect the 'difficult' child to actually do the difficult/time consuming work. Where the parents have created a facade of being a wonderful close family, everyone but the 'difficult child' will try to keep this up and put even more pressure on the 'difficult' one to fall in line. There's a lot of emotional blackmail ('after all they've done for you...', 'you have to do X, it's just what family do...') and a lot of guilt if you decide you need to walk away when they are old and vulnerable. My experience is that after decades of putting up with unpleasant behaviour to try to keep the peace/avoid upsetting DM etc and being the sensible/independent one (seen as never needing any help and expected to pitch in to help the rest of the family) I am being basically given only 2 options- 1) sacrifice my own life and time with my DC/DH/friends etc to do everything for mum and make Golden Child's life easier too; or 2) be pushed out completely and blamed for being selfish and abandoning DM in her final years. I truly wish I had gone NC with GB2, and tried very, very LC with my parents at the same time. It feels like this final outcome was always inevitable but I put myself and my own family through years of difficult family dynamics. Plus I am now, if anything, seen as worse by extended family/friends than if I'd done this decades ago since they all believe the narrative that everything was fine until DM really needed help then I disappeared.

@SamAndAnnie @formalwellies i know you’re both right i think i am going through every emotion at the moment i am frustrated opg didn’t act sooner so we could of had this resolved i am hurt how i found out dm had passed and that nobody had the decency to tell us like we don’t matter maybe they will when there is a date for the funeral i am angry that dsis has got away with this

i presume the solicitor the opg is referring to is a probate solicitor. For my own mental health i will probably not do anything it was never about the money I just wanted the truth out there but i suppose that doesn’t really matter both me and dsis know what she has done

If you are not the executor you do not need a solicitor to sort out probate. Even the executor can sort out the paperwork themselves if they prefer, using a solicitor isn't compulsory and you/sis definitely don't need one each.

The solicitor they're talking about will be for you to take sis to court yourself. Either to contest the will and try to get some of the money for yourself or to bring about a private civil prosecution (as opposed to a criminal one) for the fraud of abusing her POA and stealing from DM.

You have a greater chance of winning with a civil suit than a criminal one because it goes on "balance of probability", not "beyond reasonable doubt", meaning you can win with less evidence/proof. But you can't insist on a criminal prosecution, even police don't decide that, it's for crown prosecution service to decide. You don't win a criminal conviction and resulting punishment for your sister with a civil suit, all you can win is some form of compensation, so basically no different in outcome to contesting the will and in either case if you lose, you'll be left with the solicitor fees. I can't see it's worth the hassle, especially when you're not bothered about the money anyway.

OPG telling you "get your own solicitor" is just another way of them saying that they're not going to do anything. They just don't word it like that because they know it's not what you want to hear and they CBA with you potentially kicking off at them down the phone like some people would. So they say "get your own solicitor" because it sounds like doing something effective, and is more likely to get you off the phone without an argument.

What they actually mean is "fuck off, we've closed the case, the victim is deceased and we're no longer interested" because their job is protecting the victim, not chasing criminals.

The police could chase her but it sounds like they've put it down to a family feud and would only proceed with a criminal investigation if OPG had proved sis had behaved unlawfully in her use of the POA. You can ask the police again but they've already told you they're not interested, basically. It's not like sis is a master criminal defrauding people left right and centre, so they've decided it's not in the public's interests to waste manpower determining whether she's done something wrong or whether you're just jealous you got cut out of the will.

The whole situation sucks. I see that. The care home inform NOK about the death, not all family members, because you're right they don't care about you, you weren't their client your mum was. And sis was the named NOK on their records. You need to speak to a counsellor to process your feelings if you're struggling, not waste your time and energy and drag down your mental health even more by trying to get someone official to do something about your sister. It's the equivalent of banging your head on a wall.

At least it's over and you can get on with grieving your DM and the relationship you didn't have with her. You're at a crossroads you can either destroy yourself fretting over all this or you can start to recover. I hope you start feeling a bit more at peace, in time 💐

It is amazing how one word can cause so much damage…the narc using the word toxic about the healthy one is such a clever game play. They have prowess because they usually in positions of power so it just seems to work. Anything you then do in reaction is just solidifies that you toxic. Their game play is very clever…..and also deeply sad because there should not be any game play in a family.

Also the changing of currency of the word love. When you change it to praise you have people with whom you can control. Love is unconditional and uncontrollable, praise on the other hand you have to earn. It’s so very clever.

SamAndAnnie · 14/10/2026 20:25

wellies it's a weird situation isn't it. Reckon you're going to have to cut off all those who think you're shit, too. It's the only way to get peace really. I'm getting pushed out/exiting through choice long before that point, nobody's unwell at present, but I definitely see parallels in what's happened with you in my own situation. Just to a much lesser extent. There was a situation during the pandemic where GC started calling the shots about something regarding Narc1 that was nothing major and was really none of GCs business. So I can see the same happening when illness strikes. I hope you can extricate yourself from it all as completely as is possible for you soon and that you don't get too much hassle from flying monkeys.

OneNewEagle · 14/10/2026 22:25

On top of all the estrangement I currently have to cope with I have this evening realised my cousin is no longer my friend on SM. I’m upset as was only one of a handful of distant relations I had some sort of contact with, the rest it’s just a Christmas card once a year.

It’s pathetic but I’m really hurt as I’ve had no falling out with cousin , or with anyone.

I did tell cousin about three years ago I was estranged from all of my siblings, cousin didn’t know as not in contact with any of them. I gave cousin contact details and cousin met up and saw siblings and my DM two years ago.

So I think it’s all linked :((((

formalwellies · 15/10/2026 07:40

@SamAndAnnie Although I don't like the idea that people believe I am a bad person, it's not actually going to be difficult to cut off the flying monkeys. When the first crisis hit with DM I had a lot of contact from family friends and extended family but since I've stepped back a bit I have heard nothing from all but one. I realised then, that almost all have only ever contacted me if they want me to do something for them or Mum. Only the one who still contacts me even sent a card when my DC were born. I've seen them if there is a family wedding/funeral or if they are visiting DM but never simply because they want to see me. So really I have not lost an actual relationship. It's a weird situation, because DM always pushed the 'we're a big close family' narrative so hard that I think for ages she had me convinced that these people were important to me.
@OneNewEagle Did you usually contact your cousin through SM? I'm afraid it does sound like she's been taken in my your estranged siblings, but could there be a chance that she's just come off SM etc. You could reach out to her by text/phone to see if she would like to meet up, that way you'd know for sure. I think I'd want to do that just to know. But also I can see that it could be painful.

Eeriefairy · 15/10/2026 08:28

@OneNewEagle I remember when this happened to me with my eldest sister. It really hurt. It did cross my mind like wellies that maybe she’s just not on SM anymore. I hope that turns out to be the case.

Eeriefairy · 15/10/2026 08:29

@formalwellies I think you’ve got this by the sounds of it. You sound ready. It’s quite heartening actually.

formalwellies · 15/10/2026 09:51

@Eeriefairy I do feel quite calm about it all generally now, and ready to just move on with my life without having to think about what/when the next demand or aggression will be. But I suspect there will be a surge in nastiness/flying monkeys any time, as GB2 is going to realise I he's lost control and won't be happy. There are still a few pangs of guilt, when I have calls with DM like the latest which went something like:
DM: I need to go for a flu jab. GB2 says you need to make an appointment and take me!
Me: GB2 deals with that now
DM: But he works! How can he do that! You do medical things! I suppose I'll just have to not have it.
Me: That's your choice, it's not compulsory. You'll need to speak to GB2 and decide what to do
DM: That's right. I'll not bother then I'll just die. You don't care. GB2 does everything, why can't you just do something?
Me: I can call your GP and ask what they recommend for people who can't get to the surgery on their own, do you want me to do that?
DM: NO! They'd send someone out and I'm not at my own home!
Me: I can tell them where you are, they could come to you there
DM: NO! They might come when GB2 is busy, and [GB2's partner] does all the cleaning on her day off so it might be messy. I can't have anyone coming here! Why are you being so difficult! Anyone would think that I didn't have a daughter! GB2 is the only person who cares! I can see what you've become, you can fuck off! [puts phone down]

No she’s still on it active profile and posting on an elderly aunts posts.

And yes thats our only contact apart from a Christmas card, she lives a long way from me. I’ve loved seeing photos of her kids lives etc. last time was a special occasion there was a beautiful photo and I told her how lovely it was and how beautiful she was. And then this.

It’s very hurtful when Im not allowed to see any of my siblings and their families, LC with my parents as that’s all they want and I already lost all of my dads side of the family years ago. So that bit of contact with a cousin meant loads to me.

This is the madness I can’t get my head around. One comment from the narc and your back stage pass is revoked. How do they have this amount of power over people’s minds? The other people must hold a totally different image of them, they must really trust their judgment. The word toxic must hold a
lot of power and fear.

Eeriefairy · 15/10/2026 11:03

@formalwellies that conversation would not inspire me to feel guilty. It would make me feel angry with her that she thinks all you are for is doing what she wants and if you’re not going to do that you can “fuck off”. Imagine saying this or having this attitude to your own children.

@OneNewEagle that is what happened with my sister then. One day I looked at her page and it said “add friend” and I realised she had deleted me as a friend. I’m so sorry. I don’t know if you think it would be worth asking her why? I think I have heard of it happening to someone I know that someone got deleted by accident? My DH’s number used to randomly disappear from my mum’s phone. It might grasping at straws a bit, but if you valued the relationship it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

No I won’t be doing that, I’m used to not being wanted. I assume something has been said about me on the grapevine now she has contact details. It was very uncomfortable giving her details and having to explain I’m estranged so I wondered what the repercussions could be in the future.

My mums big birthday was earlier in the year and I had to cancel my plans, a holiday in her town to see her on the day. It was planned a year in advance after checking with siblings. my DPs suggestion so they couldn’t ruin it. But I had to cancel as they took her away instead without me. So that could get passed on to make me sound awful.

will wait and see if we get any Christmas cards from the aunts etc now as well as that cousin this year. That will probably stop as well.

It hurts as I’ve never done anything to anyone. I still don’t even know why my siblings have kicked me out of the family, all my mum says is they haven’t. it can’t ever be fixed as I have boundaries now and brick walls protecting myself as they have destroyed me.

I have no idea. I’m a quiet, nice, gentle, kind, caring pleasant person, never in a million years would I do anything to anyone.

I live hundreds of miles from anyone so it’s not as if I’m disliked and close-by so I might pop in even.

I just dread to think what’s being said about me. And if not that then why?

As I’m ND I like rules etc so the moment someone changes something I’m at a loss to how to understand or to know what to do.

OneNewEagle · 15/10/2026 11:35

Thank you everyone for the kindness.

I’ve been using SM less and less, I never even used to have it. So I will step back from it all again now. My therapist suggested it years ago to help me reconnect with friends and family when this was all starting up so I could build some new relationships with people missing from my life without my siblings being involved or able to influence anyone. And now it’s backfired. I do use it for my WI so will just try to look at those posts.

on a funnier and happier note my DP has lots of annual leave to use up and he must have realised how hurt I am feeling as he’s actually booked some off first thing this morning.

Eeriefairy · 15/10/2026 11:37

@OneNewEagle that’s so awful. In my case we were left sort of guessing why my sister had cut us all off. We had a pretty good idea though, not that it made any of us feel any better about it. She also posted a load of lies about us on her SM.

I’m so sorry. I don’t know how people can be so cruel.

That sounds lovely of your DP. It’s good you’re not alone.

formalwellies · 15/10/2026 11:39

@Eeriefairy I know it shouldn't make me feel guilty, and now I am at the stage where I don't let that guilt change what I do. This very direct approach (do as I say of F off) is fairly new, and I'm sure a result of the dementia. Before then it would have been more of the emotional blackmail and more indirect manipulation. I suppose that's part of the reason this conversation makes me feel guilty- it's so obvious that she doesn't fully understand what she's doing and GB2 is pulling her strings.

@OneNewEagle In a way I can understand your cousin's reaction, and my own extended family's reaction. They don't have a very, very close relationship with us but have always known us as part of a lovely family. Then they hear stories about us from multiple members of that lovely family, some of which relate to events that they can remember where we were absent or seemed a bit 'off' and the stories sort of make sense. And there are multiple people warning them that we are the problem and not to be trusted. In their shoes, if I didn't have experience of dysfunctional families myself, I think I'd probably assume it was true.

I know the feeling very well. l think that’s why I can’t cope with my siblings turning their backs on me. None of it makes sense at all. I need it all to make sense and to have something like a tick list to do list sort of thing so once it happens you know why and then there’s a list of what to do next.

Yes. I never push it I just place her into situations where it might happen. I struggled with friendships when I was young so I don’t want to make a big deal out of it. BUT when she actually has a friend and she doing it well it’s really nice to see. This is one situation where he needs to be on board. I did send him an email about it explaining his behaviour is making her afraid, but he doesn’t care. Why he needs to make her afraid of people I don’t know. He says strangers are bad and since we don’t know these children then they are strangers….the logic is there but the interpretation is off!
