I dont feel like mine is...

We can have a whole road trip without barely saying a word to each other

I got baxk from my best friends dad's funeral and his only conversation was 'were there many people there'

Im just curious as to what's 'normal'

So where better to ask than here

No. But I love him to bits.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/08/2026 14:40

No. I have a best friend. But I’m not looking for best friend from him. And we definitely chat A LOT and laugh regularly and I love spending time with him but he’s not my best friend. That’s a different brief I think.

I should have written this 🤣🤣🤣

Thestealer · 23/08/2026 14:42

He's not my best friend but we do chat a lot and make each other laugh.

GreenEyesMillennial · 23/08/2026 14:44

I tell my husband everything, he does the same. We have close friends but no best friends. I reckon he is my best friend!

newmenewwhatever · 23/08/2026 14:45

Absolutely not!
it’s a different emotional level with dp.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/08/2026 14:45

Yours said the same but more efficiently. ☺️

OhIHaveACopy · 23/08/2026 14:46

He’s the person I want to be with the most. And who I want to call if something good or bad happens.

SandAndSea · 23/08/2026 14:47

Yes, mine is. We chat all the time about anything and everything. It's about what works for you though.

RoseField1 · 23/08/2026 14:49

Yes, he is. He's the person I most want to hang out with and do things with. I do have friends but no 'best friend' - I'm 46 and don't really have the space or need for one. My DH fits most of the criteria. Apart from enjoying retro indie/nu metal club nights. I need other friends for that 😂

My best friend is my best friend. I don’t want to shag them 🤣🤣🤣🤣. But my partner is still someone I love spending time with. We enjoy each others company. And talk shite. And he indulges my whims and I his. He watches some of what I want to watch on the tele under sufferance and I suffer his crappy singing in the shower in return.

MasterBeth · 23/08/2026 15:05

Yes.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 23/08/2026 15:14

Very much so.

They’re my absolute favourite person to be with and we never stop laughing when we’re together.

professionalcommentreader · 23/08/2026 15:15

Yes I’d say so.

TipsyLilacSnake · 23/08/2026 15:17

I have best friends but there is honestly no one else I want to to spend time with more.

KitchenBallet · 23/08/2026 15:18

My partner is my best friend. We have been together almost 30 years from when we were 19 and he is the one person I can talk to about anything. I have a really good set of friends but I’d still say my partner is my closest friend.

daisyydaisyy · 23/08/2026 15:33

we are very good friends but he’s not my best friend. I have my sister and she’s my best friend.

mindutopia · 23/08/2026 16:47

I would say he is the person I’m closest too in this world, yes. He’s the person I trust most and the one I know would always be there for me.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 24/08/2026 16:15

God no.

But why would I want that? I want completely different things from a partner than I do from a friend.

I don't need a partner who I can talk with for hours about crap sci-fi.

I do need a partner who I can depend on to share my life with, who I can love and fancy, who I know will always do the best for our kids.

They're completely different roles, with very little overlap really.

scoopsahoooy · 24/08/2026 16:23

It depends what your definition is, I guess. He's my best friend in that he's the person I like most, want to spend time with most, share the most inside jokes and chemistry with, blah blah blah.

But he's - by definition - not my 'friend', he's my partner. So in that sense, no, he can't be my best friend because he's my husband.

But either way: you should like and be able to have interesting/fun/sustained conversations with your partner. You should enjoy spending time with them the way you do with friends, except that you also fancy them. Like, if you can't chat during a car journey or have much to say to each other, what is your relationship built on?

EmailsaysOOO · 24/08/2026 16:24

Yes he is. He has never judged me. We are in it together til death do us part.

This is so fascinating to me as someone for who the line between friend/partner is much much more blurred... I would absolutely be friends with DH if we weren't together and I can't imagine dating/marrying someone who I didn't like in the same way as my friends - i.e. I think they're interesting, fun people whose personality and interests and conversations were compatible with my own. Other than sexual attraction I can't see a difference between the two - I'd genuinely love you to describe the difference for you and how you see the roles (if you can be bothered! I'm just intrigued).

ClassyLass · 24/08/2026 16:25

Yes, he's my best friend. I tell him everything and we were born in the same year so we have the same sense of humour etc.

I'm not sure he'd know what to ask about a best friends dad's funeral, though?

Absolutely this. I can't imagine spending all that time with a person who I couldn't have the same level of ease, fun and interesting conversations with as I do my official best friends.

1000% yes
