Boyfriend said love you by accident, should I mention it?

Hi I’m looking for some female perspectives on a situation that happened last night. I’m torn between following my gut to just treat it as a funny, isolated incident, or if I should actually address it.

My boyfriend (48M) and I (45F) have been together for a few months. We both have our own places, busy independent lives, and see each other a few days a week. Honestly, everything is going incredibly well. We’ve met each other’s friends, have fun together, and speak most days without any pressure or heavy expectations.

In the beginning, he was very vocal about how much he liked me. That slowed down a bit, but recently on a very romantic date (with a bit of wine involved), we both confessed we felt like we were falling for each other. We haven't brought that up since, just enjoying life.

He went out for a work do last night, had a few drinks, and called me on his walk home. It was a really fun, entertaining call and he was cracking me up. When he got home, he said he was heading to bed and signed off with: “Love you, night.”

Because he’d been drinking, it sounded maybe like muscle memory or autopilot, so I just laughed. I wasn't about to say it back in that context. But he quickly, panicked and went, “OH FUCK.”

He didn’t hang up, but he started stuttering, got super awkward, and mumbled, “Ok, well, good night.”

My instinct is to not mention it again and just pass it off as an amusing drunken slip. We already know we are happy, so maybe it's not that deep? But his panic reaction makes me wonder if I should be reading more into it!

How would you read this? Should I leave it alone or does the "Oh Fuck" reaction warrant a casual chat when he's sober? Part of me would rather not know the truth!

It's not that deep.

pizzaHeart · 14/08/2026 07:45

I wouldn’t read too much into the first one more like acknowledging the affection but no more but I wouldn’t like the next one at all.
It’s not like you were going to move to his place the next morning after the first message so his swearing was unnecessary.

Bonitalazenia · 14/08/2026 07:46

He means it, he just wanted you to say it first.

Clomid100 · 14/08/2026 07:50

He meant it but because you didn’t say it back he tried to downplay it as an accident.

Garfieldloveslasagnepie · 14/08/2026 07:51

Maybe because you laughed he felt awkward

TaggieOharasLostBra · 14/08/2026 07:52

Definitely don’t bring it up. It wouldn’t be a casual chat. If you want to talk about the relationship generally you can raise it but I wouldn’t fixate on this.

DaisyChain505 · 14/08/2026 07:52

Honestly, at your age you shouldn’t be feeling so nervous about a relationship or dissecting every little detail. It should either feel good and secure or it doesn’t.

Lifes too short to be living on such tender hooks about a relationship. You should be able to ask the questions you need answers to and be shown that someone is really into you and is sticking around and appreciates you.

ForPinkDuck · 14/08/2026 07:53

Its fine.

PinkLady1979 · 14/08/2026 07:53

Yes he meant it but you are still being guarded and didn't say it back so he backtracked and made light if it. I wouldn't bring it up but as youbhasve saidnuou are falling for him then maybe consider how to react next time

pouletvous · 14/08/2026 07:53

If he loves you, he will say it again when the moment is right

try not to give obsess over something he said after a few drinks

Titchyglitch · 14/08/2026 08:02

to be clear it’s the oh fuck response not the I love you that I am unsure about. I don’t even think it was because I laughed, he panicked straight away they overlapped.

no I don’t need to dissect it and I hadn’t been, I didn’t think this was something grown adults needed to discuss like this and I’ve not been nervous, it is what it is and I don’t need him to say it to feel close to him or happy. I think he’s got more of an issue with ‘I love you’ than I do deep down though

It wasn't big protestation of love, you can say love you, goodnight to a friend or a bf, gf just as a term of endearment.

SirChenjins · 14/08/2026 08:12

Someone has to be the first to say it! Sounds like he was drunk, said what he meant, then though oh fuck she's laughing, I'm drunk, not the time or the place. Are you questioning the relationship generally - does something feel a bit off that's made you doubt this?

Titchyglitch · 14/08/2026 08:20

I’m not questioning it but it creates a heaviness and perhaps expectations and we have been keeping this very enjoyable in the moment

I agree you say this to your friends or family so that’s why I didn’t question the I love you itself. I laughed because he was drunk

Not that I would ask this, but think if I asked his closest friends they would definitely tell me he is in love with me

SirChenjins · 14/08/2026 08:23

Do you want him to be in love with you?

Castolaya · 14/08/2026 08:26

Do you love him?

Vitany · 14/08/2026 08:54

Whats wrong with saying I love you after a few months of dating someone? He probably hoped you'd say it back.

bunnypenny · 14/08/2026 08:59

Christ almighty, you say you’re 45?

bpch · 14/08/2026 09:07

You’re acting like you’re in an episode of Dawson’s Creek. Over thinking far too much, leave it be.

PepsiBook · 14/08/2026 09:09

I told the British gas guy that I loved him recently when he left after a repair. It just slipped out. I don't even know him and he's older than my dad.

Screamingabdabz · 14/08/2026 09:16

The Joe Marler lookalike paramedic who dropped my dad off to hospital recently said “bye, love you” to his (male) mate as they left in a separate ambulance. It’s such a throwaway phrase these days.

The ‘oh fuck’ is a bit of a kicker but I’d just carry on and ignore it happened. You’re clearly going in the right direction, I’d judge his actions not words.

Titchyglitch · 14/08/2026 09:30

I do love him and I would say it back if he said it in a different context because this was more a slip of the tongue and a throwaway phrase than something I felt I could respond to, but as he panicked and said oh fuck, I don’t want to be the one who says it first as now I’m unsure of his reaction and don’t want to make it uncomfortable and weird.

I’m just going to wait it out. I’m seeing him later on. I don’t think we will mention it and if I was waiting, I think I would be in for a very long wait 😆 so I will focus on actions not words.

This bit of a relationship always feels weird when it transitions into deeper feelings so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be wondering

I feel like this was a slip of the tongue it wasn’t a heartfelt declaration

I once said it to the plumber by mistake 🙈 I wouldn't overthink it, just relax and enjoy yourself, he sounds a decent man

But that can be lovely too? Lessens any ambiguity, it slipped out because he does feel it, and drink loosened his tongue. It just is; he loves you! I would use it as a cute way in to saying it back to him today. Life's too short, why leave him dangling if things are good ❤️
