MIL and how I hate her

When MIL found out I was pregnant the first thing she asked was "what names do you have?". I told her we were not thinking about names until the baby was actually born and then we were looking to look at him or her and decide what suits.

MIL then said she'd always liked the name "Lucy" for a girl and "Liam" for a boy. I said that's nice but not names I would choose. She then went in a strop and said I was being rude about her names and she bets my names are crap.

DH took her side and said I was being rude but agreed that he didn't like her names either.

Anyway DD was born on the 14th and MIL instantly asked what we had called her. When we told her she was all up in arms saying it was a disgusting name for a child and if we went ahead and registered her as that MIL would continue to call her Lucy and tell everyone else that her name was Lucy too.

What annoys me even more is that DH is now starting to take her side and saying maybe we should change her name incase she gets picked on for it (although not to Lucy).

To add insult to injury my own mum has now admitted that she hates the name and my sister apparantly thought it was a joke.

Would you dig your heels in or compromise on the name? Everyone I've spoken to either pulls a face or outright admits that they don't like it. It makes me cross because even if I didn't like a name, I wouldn't say it to the parents.

hahaha - too, too good!!! In tears of laughter here!!!

Buda · 26/06/2008 17:20

I just hope there isn't another one in her class at school. Wouldn't be very individual then really. You should check out the Top 100 Names list and see if it is becoming too popular.

You could go with Slithery Anne Lucy - Sal for short?

Ecmo · 26/06/2008 17:27

Slithery Lyn?

or is that a bit too Harry Potterish?

barnstaple · 26/06/2008 17:44

Don't worry, Slithery will be shortened to Slit (and if you train her to be the local bike she could become Clit when she's older, which is much nicer).

MrsMacaroon · 26/06/2008 18:08

I will name this child bygod

MrsMacaroon · 26/06/2008 18:08

ace thread whatever!

slummymummy36 · 28/03/2009 21:38

PMSL!! What a thread!

Not my tatse in a name but each to their own I suppose!

Not usually one to back the MIL (an avid MIL hater myself) but I think this MIL may have a valid point.

Haribosmummy · 28/03/2009 21:46

Aren't there laws to stop parents calling their DD something like Slithery???????????????

I am really hoping this is wind up.

Flippin' hell... I cannot imagine what my mother or mother in law's reaction would be (or my DH for that matter) if I even CONSIDERED the name Slithery.

Slithery is what you call your pet snake.

Slithery isn't unusual, it's weird.

prettyfly1 · 28/03/2009 22:13

If I'd named DS on my first impression of him, He'd now be called Alien Egghead

BatmansWilly · 29/03/2009 03:33

I'm sure a registry office person wouldnt accept a name like Slithery. stupid

EachPeachPearMum · 29/03/2009 10:35

Hilarious...
I'm not sure how I missed this first time round... on holiday I think.

scrooged · 29/03/2009 10:42

Could you not have called her Sally and kept this as a nickname?

You can go back to the registry office and change it if it's within a certain time frame I think.

Excellent thread! had me chortling!

On a serious note though my MIL refuses to call my wee boy by his name as it wasnt on her "approved" list. She even wrote on his xmas card "to my grandson" WTF?

Mind you she only lives 5 mins up the road and still refuses to come visit but wants us to do all the running around, even though she is fit enough to walk 2 miles to the bleedin pub! But everything is about "her" wee boy and how precious he is, though she did tell everyone I banned her from seeing him on mothers day just because I wanted MY first mothers day spend with MY son after TTC for 8 years! Lunatic!

She be a witch but thats a whole other thread!

No no, of course you can't call your precious baby something nuts. Nuts, on its own, is fine. Or Nutella for a girl, obviously.

(Missed this thread first time round, no wonder you thought it wanted resurrecting, it's class!)

I wonder if the OP is from a bunch of bored ladies from another forum... windup anyway.

If OP doesn't care for MIL's opinion, why would she give a fig about anybody else's?

Bored with this now and gone... feeble, OP, try harder. Grin
