MIL and how I hate her

When MIL found out I was pregnant the first thing she asked was "what names do you have?". I told her we were not thinking about names until the baby was actually born and then we were looking to look at him or her and decide what suits.

MIL then said she'd always liked the name "Lucy" for a girl and "Liam" for a boy. I said that's nice but not names I would choose. She then went in a strop and said I was being rude about her names and she bets my names are crap.

DH took her side and said I was being rude but agreed that he didn't like her names either.

Anyway DD was born on the 14th and MIL instantly asked what we had called her. When we told her she was all up in arms saying it was a disgusting name for a child and if we went ahead and registered her as that MIL would continue to call her Lucy and tell everyone else that her name was Lucy too.

What annoys me even more is that DH is now starting to take her side and saying maybe we should change her name incase she gets picked on for it (although not to Lucy).

To add insult to injury my own mum has now admitted that she hates the name and my sister apparantly thought it was a joke.

Would you dig your heels in or compromise on the name? Everyone I've spoken to either pulls a face or outright admits that they don't like it. It makes me cross because even if I didn't like a name, I wouldn't say it to the parents.

dd is currently called "Lisp". She seeing a SALT and we're hoping she'll grow into "VoiceLikeKirstyYoung"

Slitherina? Bit more middle class.

squeaver · 26/06/2008 14:26

It's well done wind-up tho' isn't it? There's history, poetry, interesting characters, just enough detail to make you think it could be true.

I'm kind of hoping that the MIL gets her own spin-off thread (My DIL's a whacked out hippy with ridiculous ideas about name choices, that sort of thing)

Stands up and applauds, Mrs S. Really, that was beautifully done. envy]

MrSSnoop · 26/06/2008 14:28

Slitheria sounds nice too, I might suggest to DH that we modify the name, that would be a decent compromise.

The sofa thing was a nice twist - realistic and very reminiscent of other MN threads

You're getting might close to the Harry Potter bandwagon now, MrsS - just go the whole hog and call her Slytherina.

pissing myself here. i am actually crying!!

micci25 · 26/06/2008 16:55

hahaha whats not funny is that i actually know a little girl named after a harry potter character and its not hermoine either its worse! though the mother maintains that she has never read harry potter!!!

if i had named my dds after what we thought when they were first born they would have been 'alien' dd1 and dd2 would have been 'allsquashedup'!! though people do often think that i have made up dd1s name! well dps family think that i have made it up! every one else loves it! though my nan didnt like her name and did threaten just to call her 'melissa' as she couldnt pronounce her name and for the first few months deliberately mispronouced her name!!

ProfYaffle · 26/06/2008 16:57

"we only refer to her as Slithery when we're tired and getting grumpy." ROFL

Hecate · 26/06/2008 17:00

Well done. After all the piss poor trolling efforts recently, it's nice to see a master at work. 10/10.

Who are you, normally?

Ecmo · 26/06/2008 17:02

I'd go for

Polikwaptiwa

as an alternative - it means butterfly sitting on a flower

or maybe

Aponivi

which means - where the wind blows down the gap

BetteNoire · 26/06/2008 17:02

MrSSnoop - I know you wanted an original name, so it seems that you didn't know that Slithery has been number three in the list of Most Popular Girls Names (Saturn edition) for the past 3.8 million years.

Lucy, however, has never yet made the list.

ggglimpopo · 26/06/2008 17:05

I think slithery will only work if the surname goes ok.

So if your surname is Snake or Snot or Mass or lump she may well be teased.

But if you are Macdonald or Evans or something it will probably be ok.
