My partner, magic mushrooms and our holiday

Lm4065 · 10/12/2025 11:45

My partner micro doses magic mushrooms daily for mental health reasons (depression). I don’t have an issue with this.
however we are planning our first holiday. Nothing is booked yet but they have said they are planning to take some mushrooms for use there which makes sense but it hadn’t crossed my mind.
im not comfortable travelling with someone who is carrying something illegal. I don’t want to be implicated or get into trouble. I would lose my job.
my partner understands to a point but says this is not what the airport security are looking for and they won’t get caught.
I agree the risk is low however that’s not the point. They are asking me to take a big risk, and even if we don’t get caught I will be super stressed in the run up to the flight, during and whilst waiting for the case.
my partner is playing down the risk but this is not something I’m willing to compromise on.
I know my partner has travelled with friends when carrying these drugs in their bag and the friends have not had an issue with it.
does anyone have any advice Please .

Thanks, are there different rules for different countries then?

yes. And - more importantly - potentially extremely different consequences.

I would travel separately (and consider your destination). Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Dubai, Turkey are (some of the) countries I’d definitely avoid in this case. Edit: yes, even if travelling separately.

They're a thing. DH got some from a dispensary in Canada when he was there.

Some countries you can buy them legally. But he can’t take them in the flight with him.

This.

There are more enlightened countries that don't have draconian attitudes to recreational drugs.

Unenlightened, you mean.

I am happy with our drugs laws thanks

Not every one is.

Thanks for your pointless, judgy input.

Exactly, there's nothing wrong with microdosing. However there's something very stupid about taking what is currently classified as a class A through airports.

I agree with this 👆

No. I don't.

Another judgy pearl clutcher enters the fray.

Partner ..well at least your not married
What happens when you have children and he's of his face ,will he be able to care for them.
What happens when he no longer gets the hit from mushrooms and moves on to harder drugs .
But yeah ...I'd not be travelling with him

It's 'off' your face btw. Mushrooms don't lead to harder drugs, there is zero evidence of this ever happening. Alcohol and tobacco are far more lethal and addictive.
There's mounting - medically researched - evidence that elements from mushrooms, i.e., psilocybin are highly effective at treating depression and PTSD, eating disorders. Especially treatment resistant depression. These treatments will be available within a decade, with few side effects and no risk of addiction (unlike many existing medications.)

You could educate yourself @Pinkchristmastree1, should you choose to.

I wish that there was a drug that people could take that would improve their grammar.

Mushrooms aren't chemicals, they're... well, mushrooms!

Everything we eat and drink is made up of chemicals. In fact EVERYTHING full stop is made of chemicals...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/12/2025 16:29

"...and they won’t get caught"

I wonder how many people languishing in a foreign jail have been told this?

Mumsnet’s a different bloody world when it comes to drugs, I swear! Always such ‘cool’, laissez-faire attitude to them. I must live an incredibly sheltered life as I’ve never heard of using magic mushrooms to treat depression! How do people even discover this shit?!

OP, I wouldn’t be travelling with him. Book the flights separately, you don’t want to implicate yourself if he gets caught.

Micro dosing has been in mainstream media for years that’s how people discover it. Even the Telegraph Magazine did a story on it about a decade ago….

People just read. And they learn things from that.

Almost everyone who struggles with depression knows this. It's been studied for ages. There are research centres at top London unis dedicated to testing shroom microdosing to treat depression. It is also supposed to be beneficial to ADHD.

It is unfair that he can't take a medical dose with him, but no different from not being allowed to bring certain OTC medication into other countries where it is banned (I remember having to chuck out my Vicks inhaler on the way to Japan!)

Please tell him it may result in arrest and no holiday. Not worth the risk.

FoxLoxInSox · 10/12/2025 16:34

It matters not what our personal stance is on drugs / illegality / legality / ‘chemicals’ etc…. The point is, whilst ever drugs are illegal you’d be insane to try to smuggle them between countries. 🙄 🤦🏼‍♀️

I can almost see why someone might contemplate smuggling mushrooms through an airport if it was going to net them thousands of pounds and if they were desperate for money. But just so he can microdose for a few days on holiday (which he’d be perfectly fine not doing) it blows my mind that level of stupidity 🥴

Geranium879 · 10/12/2025 16:34

Absolutely, I would only travel on a selerate booking with seperate luggage.
Its a class A drug.
I hope you are not travelling to Dubai, Singapore or similar!

Or, as 80% of the population think, "magic"

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 10/12/2025 16:46

Absolutely do not try to take magic mushrooms or magic mushroom products through border control. They are class A drugs in the UK, so he'd be at risk of getting charged with class A drugs possession before you'd even got on the plane.

You haven't given your destination, but some countries are so concerned about food pathogens being spread or non-native plant species being introduced, that they wouldn't let you bring a bag of unlabelled mushrooms from the supermarket in your personal luggage, in case of disease. They'd literally confiscate the ingredients for a stir-fry, for immediate destruction.

Do not mess around with border control for any country. The customs for one EU country confiscated and exploded a friend's power pack for her mobile phone once. She was leaving the country to return back to the UK!

Microdosing was briefly a thing about 30 years ago. It was discussed in relation to schizophrena and alcoholism (DB subscribes to a lot of medical journals).

The thing that intrigued me most was the suggestion that a single dose can actually "cure" (or prevent from recurring) the condition. Like all you need is a slight "rewire" to set things straight.

However, as DB has said for years, it's a shame when cures are natural, as no one will spend money researching them.

Kings College have been running trials for psychoactives for a while now so there is research going into it. Microdosing is very much a thing now. I have a friend who does it.

I know, you can quite literally pick them on your Sunday walk with the dog. Nature grows them herself from our own British soil. Untampered with, undiluted. Nothing added or taken away.

Crazy for an indigenous species existing as it grows from our own land to be class A. It exists so far removed from cocaine or ketamine etc.

outerspacepotato · 10/12/2025 16:56

Drug smuggling into another country is not a low risk activity.

Is he doing these with the knowledge and approval of his mental health provider?

He's taking a huge risk and this has the possibility of jail time, depending where you're going.

I'd be OUT.
